Crowdsourcing Results: Darvish’s Draft Round & Auction Values

The results are in. After crowdsourcing Yu Darvish’s expected 5×5 stats and ottoneu points production, last week we asked you about his draft round and auction value in three formats…

  1. 12-team mixed league, 5×5 scoring
  2. $260 budget, 5×5 scoring
  3. $400 budget, ottoneu points

We received 248 total responses, with the results as follows…

Draft Round $260 Auction $400 Auction
Average 7.9 $13.5 $15.6
Standard Dev. 3.2 $6.2 $9.5
Median 8 $14 $16
Mode 8 $12 $1

Using ADP, the draft round data tells us he’s being valued similarly to guys like Johnny Cueto, Josh Johnson, and Michael Pineda. The auction value stuff is more along the lines of Gavin Floyd, Jordan Zimmermann, and Josh Beckett. I think the latter group is a little more reasonable, though I’ve always been bearish when it comes to international imports. I jumped the gun and grabbed Darvish for a buck in our staff league last year, and I’m pretty thrilled about that investment. If you’re going to take the plunge this year, I hope the crowdsourcing series helps in some way.

Darvish ceiling is more than any of the dudes you mentioned. So for keeper leagues his value would be significantly higher.

Wouldn’t say Darvish’s ceiling is greater than Pineda’s or Johnson’s. Johnson’s a Cy Young Contender when healthy, so that’s his ceiling. Pineda is younger than Darvish and has elite K ability and control.

Even Zimmermann might not have a substantially lower ceiling, assuming he is able to increase his K rate as he gets further out from surgery.

Not sure pineda being younger matters at all. Darvish still has his whole prime ahead of him. And Pineda is young guy relying on his slider, that hasn’t proven he can go multiple years at 200IP without breaking. Who would I bet on to have the longer productive career from here on – Darvish.

Pineda maybe, Josh Johnson no. When healthy, he has been in the top 3 of Cy young contention both of the last two years.
