Fantasy Chat Friday

I’m pleased to announce that starting this Friday, April 30, live fantasy chats will become a regular occurrence at RotoGraphs. The chats will run for at least an hour each Friday at noon eastern. The RotoGraph writers (and maybe even a few lurkers from FanGraphs) will be around to answer any fantasy baseball related questions that might be weighing heavily on your minds. What a way to end the work week!

A Friendly Reminder: If you’re asking a trade-related question, please mention what type of league you’re playing in.

Hey guys,

I’m in a 12 team, 11×11 league (5×5 + H, 2B, BB, TB, OBP, SLG ) with LF, CF, RF seperated

I have Austin Jackson CF and I’m looking to acquire a somewhat cheap CF upgrade. I was eyeing Colby Rasmus as that candidate. How big of a fantasy seperation will these two bats be this year? (Meaning what do I need to trade with A. Jackson to get Rasmus?)

I don’t write for this site, but IMO it depends on the owner. I love Colby Rasmus, i believe his celing is a left handed Matt Holliday and I believe he could reach close to his ceiling this year. So if I’m sitting there with Rasmus I would want Austin Jackson plus another really good player. Like Jackson + Beckett or Wandy or Gallardo… But again I probably like Rasmus more than most people, so who knows maybe the guy in your league would take Jackson + Kuroda or Jurrjens or some other mid-tier guy like that…

Dude, don’t give up guys like Beckett or Gallardo for Rasmus. Yeah he may be great, but you’d be paying top dollar by giving up those players. He may end up a top 50 or so player, but there’s also the chance he’s a top 100 guy, or even a top 150 guy. Giving up Jackson AND a player like Beckett or Gallardo seems like overkill, particularly on a first offer.

I think Rasmus is the better bet over the course of the year. Jackson has been operating at a near-.500 BABIP with a too-high-for-leadoff K-rate. Rasmus’ power is for real and he plays in a potent lineup. You probably can’t get Rasmus for pennies so I’d imagine that you’d have to part with something of value. With that said, the trade referenced above is way too much for Rasmus. I assume this isn’t a keeper league…

You’re correct, 2010 only.

BABIP for both has been pretty insane. Both seem to be playing well above themselves

As compared to Bill James’s projections (Current 2010 Stat/Bill James)

Austin Jackson: .491/.371 BABIP… difference .120
Colby Rasmus: .394/.279 BABIP… difference .115

And just to throw in… K%
Austin Jackson: 35.6%
Colby Rasmus: 33.9%

Young players like Jackson and Rasmus tend to have high K% early in the career. Rasmus is going to high 5-6 for the Cards and Jackson will be heading to the 9 spot fast. Check the ISO on Rasmus – he has legit power and will bring decent SBs as well. Get the deal done before everyone realizes how good Rasmus is.
