Bullpen Report: May 23, 2022

The 2022 version of Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads

Ryan Pressly, HOU: Three of the last four days; 10 pitches on Sunday. | RosterResource

Rafael Montero, Héctor Neris and Ryne Stanek should all be good to go on Monday.

Scott Barlow, KCR: 29 pitches on Sunday. Josh Staumont, KCR: 33 pitches on Sunday. | RosterResource

If both of Kansas City’s co-closers are unavailable for Monday’s game, a save opportunity would likely fall to Amir Garrett, Collin Snider, or Taylor Clarke.

Andrés Muñoz, SEA: 17 pitches on Sunday; 16 pitches on Saturday. | RosterResource

Muñoz’s 10th inning implosion (more of that in the “Losing A Grip” section) might keep him out of commission for a few days, if he’s still a closing option at all. Paul Sewald is by far the most reliable reliever in the Mariners bullpen right now.

Injury News

Aroldis Chapman, NYY: Battled Achilles soreness on Sunday. | RosterResource

Chapman’s recent struggles could merit his inclusion in the “Losing A Grip” section as well, especially with Clay Holmes so dominant this year. But since he’s battling some soreness in his Achilles’ heel, that might explain at least some of it. Chapman allowed a home run to A.J. Pollock on a fastball registering 95 MPH, low by Chapman’s standards. He allowed a walk and an RBI double before being removed from the game for Ron Marinaccio. Whether Chapman needs an IL stint remains to be seen, but regardless, he might be down in the pecking order for awhile.

Andrew Kittredge, TBR: Placed on the 15-day IL (strained lower back) on Sunday. | RosterResource

The Rays haven’t had a singular closer for years, but Kittredge is the closest they’ve got, leading the club with five saves this year after serving as the top closing option once Diego Castillo was traded to the Mariners last year. In 18 innings this year, the righty has allowed just one walk to 13 strikeouts, though he’s got an inflated home run rate, letting five balls leave the yard.

The Rays will continue to play matchups with Kittredge out. The top righty closing options are J.P. Feyereisen and Jason Adam, with Brooks Raley 레일리 and Colin Poche from the left side.

Outlier Saves

•None

Committee Clarity

Art Warren, CIN | RosterResource

The Reds haven’t had many save opportunities this season, but they had one develop on Sunday, and it was the righty Warren who took it on. He threw a perfect inning, wrapping up a nearly perfect day for the Reds bullpen (Warren followed Alexis Díaz, who followed Tony Santillan). The three righties combined to face 15 batters, retiring 14 of them to lock down a win. Díaz has been especially been impressive, with a 0.92 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 19.2 innings. The three relievers who pitched today are probably top in the pecking order for Reds saves.

Losing A Grip

•Andrés Muñoz, SEA | RosterResource

Despite throwing over 100 MPH with a wipeout slider, Muñoz massively struggled to put Red Sox batters away on Sunday, allowing four hits on just two outs, with the dagger being a walk-off grand slam from Franchy Cordero. Sunday’s blowup ballooned Muñoz’s ERA from 3.55 to 6.08, so Scott Servais and the Mariners may elect to ease him back in to the late innings. With his stuff, though, the club might be tempted to keep running him back out there, especially with a bullpen bereft of solid options.
