Bullpen Report: May 17, 2023
The 2023 version of the Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.
We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.
- Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
- Injury News
- Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
- Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
- Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.
The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads
•Paul Sewald, SEA: 27 pitches on Tuesday. | RosterResource
Sewald was just getting some work in after not pitching since last Wednesday, but now he’ll probably be down on the 16th. Matt Brash, Justin Topa, and Trevor Gott should all be available.
•Andrew Chafin, ARI: Four of the last five days; 11 pitches on Tuesday. | RosterResource
Miguel Castro didn’t pitch Tuesday, so he’ll be good to go Wednesday.
•Devin Williams, MIL: 27 pitches on Tuesday. | RosterResource
Peter Strzelecki (30 pitches), Elvis Peguero (23), Holy Milner (22) and Joel Payamps (34) all had significant workloads after Wade Miley left the game early due to injury, so that could leave Milwaukee very short-staffed on Wednesday. Milner and Peguero are the likeliest to be available.
•Camilo Doval, SFG: 14 pitches on Tuesday; 25 pitches on Monday. | RosterResource
Tyler Rogers threw 27 pitches on Tuesday, so he might not be available Wednesday either. That could leave John Brebbia to close.
Injury News
•Ian Hamilton, NYY: Left Tuesday’s game with right groin tightness. | RosterResource
Hamilton threw 27 pitches in relief of Domingo Germán after he was ejected for a foreign substance violation, so he probably wouldn’t be available on Wednesday regardless. The Yankees say he’ll be reevaluated, so we don’t know any specifics yet. Hamilton has been one of the league’s breakout relievers this year, with a 1.23 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 22 innings of work.
•Pete Fairbanks, TBR: Activated from the 15-day IL (right forearm inflammation) on Monday. | RosterResource
Fairbanks spent the minimum time on the IL with his right arm injury, and now he’ll return to a Rays bullpen that could really use his help, as it’s dealing with a slew of injuries and poor performances. Fairbanks was unscored upon this year in 7.2 innings, albeit with only six strikeouts, a low rate for him. He’ll probably share save chances with Jason Adam, who’s also been excellent.

What happened with the Nationals yesterday? Just decided to use Finnegan in a high leverage non-save situation?
Given the confusion over who is actually closing, as well as both Finnegan and Harvey having a bumpy time of it lately, one would think they’d get at least a ‘not very stable’ color. Maybe that’s just implied because they pitch for the Nationals.
The row is so red, it’s actually infrared and we can’t perceive it.
Ouch. 😔
