Bullpen Report: June 27, 2021

NEW FEATURE ALERT! We have added an upgraded version of RosterResource’s Closer Depth Chart to FanGraphs. Read more about it here.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

The 2021 version of Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save.)

Notable Workloads

Michael Fulmer, DET: 25 pitches on Saturday. | RosterResource

Fulmer was charged with a loss and a blown save in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader against Houston. Fellow closer committee member José Cisnero (22 pitches) recorded the save in game one. It seems likely that both are available on Sunday, but Gregory Soto is a candidate for a save opportunity if that’s not the case.

Lou Trivino, OAK: 27 pitches on Saturday, 2 of last 3 days. | RosterResource

The two most likely candidates for save opportunities in Trivino’s absence, Jake Diekman (27 pitches) and Yusmeiro Petit (26 pitches), were also used on Saturday. In fact, the Athletics used their entire bullpen on Saturday. It seems likely Trivino will be available if a save opportunity presents itself, however, it could be a situation where the least taxed arm gets used.

Brad Brach, CIN: 22 pitches on Saturday, 2 of last 3 days. | RosterResource

Co-closer Amir Garrett (17 pitches, 2 of last 3 days) pitched the ninth and got the save on Saturday. With Tejay Antone going back on the IL, either Brach or Garrett would be the likely candidates in a save situation on Sunday with Garrett being the least used arm.

Joakim Soria, ARI: 22 pitches on Saturday. | RosterResource

Noé Ramirez and Ryan Buchter are likely candidates for save opportunities if Soria is unavailable.

Tyler Rogers, SFG: 22 pitches on Saturday, 2 of last 3 days. | RosterResource

Co-closer Jake McGee (12 pitches) was used on Saturday as well. It seems likely that Jake McGee will get the save opportunity on Sunday if one presents itself, given he has thrown fewer pitches (21) in a three-day span compared to Rogers (34). However, if both co-closers are unavailable, Zack Littell is a likely candidate for a save opportunity.

Injury News

Tejay Antone, CIN  | Placed on 10-Day IL (right forearm strain) | RosterResource

This is tough news for the Reds’ most reliable reliever. Antone had been activated from the IL after suffering inflammation in his right forearm on June 22nd and now hits the IL once again five days later. While Antone was not being used in a traditional closer role, his absence will give more opportunities to Brad Brach and Amir Garrett to accumulate saves.

Zack Britton, NYY  | Placed on 10-Day IL (hamstring). | RosterResource

Having only pitched 4.1 innings since coming off the IL just over two weeks ago, Britton was next in line for save opportunities. Now, Chad Green and Jonathan Loaisiga will fill that role in his absence. The good news for the Yankees bullpen is that Justin Wilson and Darren O’Day are trending in the right direction and may soon be activated from the IL.

Outlier Saves

Adam Ottavino, BOS | RosterResource

Matt Barnes was likely unavailable due to high usage coming into Saturday’s contest with the Yankees. Adam Ottavino was also on high usage alert, but came into the seventh inning with two outs after Hirokazu Sawamura walked three batters. Ottavino now has five saves on the year and appears to be the most trusted arm to use in save situations when Barnes is unavailable.

Committee Clarity

•None

Losing a Grip

Héctor Neris, PHI | RosterResource

In yesterday’s bullpen report, Jason Martinez went into detail regarding Neris being removed from the closer role, yet still being the most likely candidate for a save opportunity on Saturday given the rest of the pen’s usage. Saturday’s game played out just like that and Neris blew the save in the ninth, giving up two runs (unearned), two walks, and one hit. We should now expect to see José Alvarado as the new closer, with Archie Bradley following close behind.

Fulmer sent on the 10 day IL with neck issues. No timetable given for his return.

Perhaps he injured his neck swiveling his head to watch the two home runs he allowed?
