The 2023 version of the Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.
We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

- Injury News
- Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
- Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.

Notable Workloads
•Carlos Estévez, LAA: 7 pitches on Tuesday; 24 pitches on Monday. | RosterResource
Chris Devenski would likely close Wednesday if Estévez is unavailable.
•Justin Lawrence, COL: Three of the last four days; 28 pitches on Tuesday. | RosterResource
Pierce Johnson, Jake Bird, and Brent Suter are all plausible closing options on Wednesday.

Outlier Saves
•Pierce Johnson, COL | RosterResource
Johnson just got removed from his closing role due to some pretty extreme ineffectiveness, but he was needed in the tenth inning to clean up Matt Carasiti’s mess and get the final two outs of what ended up a 7-6 win. It wasn’t perfect for Johnson, as he uncorked a wild pitch, but he ultimately sealed his twelfth save of the season. Presumed closer Justin Lawrence was used in more of a fireman role, coming on with one out in the seventh and recording five outs, all told.
The Rockies’ closing situation, then, remains in some level of flux if Bud Black refers to deploy Lawrence and Jake Bird as bridge guys. Perhaps Daniel Bard gets his job back; he pitched the ninth in what was then a tie game on Tuesday.
•Luis Ortiz, PHI | RosterResource
Ortiz piggybacked off of Zack Wheeler’s solid six innings, throwing three innings of two-run ball for his first career save. He wasn’t particularly effective, but was efficient (he only threw 38 pitches) so evidently the official scorer deemed him solid enough for the three-inning save.
•Keaton Winn, SFG | RosterResource
It was a helluva MLB debut for Winn, who went four innings of one-run ball to earn a very rare four-inning save in relief of Alex Cobb and Luke Jackson. He was pretty efficient, with 55 pitches, but he’ll be down for a few days for sure. He’ll likely continue to work in the bulk inning role that Tristan Beck, who was sent down to make room for Winn, had.
