Notable Workloads
•Héctor Neris, HOU: 17 pitches on Friday; 19 pitches on Thursday. | RosterResource
Co-closer Rafael Montero should be good to go on Saturday (Ryan Pressly is on the Paternity List).
•Lou Trivino, OAK: 22 pitches on Friday; 21 pitches on Thursday. | RosterResource
Zach Jackson and A.J. Puk (who earned the save Friday when Trivino couldn’t close it out) are the top closing candidates on Saturday.
•Craig Kimbrel, LAD: 20 pitches on Friday; 12 pitches on Thursday. | RosterResource
Evan Phillips, Alex Vesia and Yency Almonte are all plausible choices if Kimbrel is down on Saturday.
Injury News
•Michael King, NYY: Suffered a likely-season-ending elbow fracture on Friday. | RosterResource
Just awful news for the Yankees, as King has been perhaps the best setup man in baseball, with a heavy workload (51 innings) but still brilliant results (66 strikeouts and a 2.29 ERA). This is certainly an awful way to end what’s been a breakout season for King, and puts the onus on struggling Yankee relievers Jonathan Loáisiga and Aroldis Chapman to step up behind Clay Holmes and Wandy Peralta. This also increases the need for Brian Cashman to acquire a reliever (or two or three) at the upcoming Trade Deadline.
Outlier Saves
•A.J. Puk, OAK | RosterResource
Lou Trivino just couldn’t quite get the job done on Friday, giving up two runs and leaving Puk with a two-out mess to clean up and Kole Calhoun at the plate, with the A’s lead trimmed from three to one. Puk ended up drilling Calhoun with a pitch but was able to close it out by inducing a Marcus Semien groundout. It was Puk’s first save of the season, and he may be in line for more considering (a) how well he’s pitched (2.27 ERA) and (b) the shaky ground that Trivino is on.
