Bullpen Report: July 18, 2022

The 2022 version of Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Injury News

Pete Fairbanks, TBR: Activated from the 60-day IL (strained lat) on Sunday. | RosterResource

Fairbanks did allow a homer to Austin Hays in his first inning of work in 2022, but he also struck out two and threw 10 of 15 pitches for strikes while being thrown right back into the fire with a three-run lead in the eighth. He’s probably fourth or fifth in line for saves with Jason Adam, Brooks Raley 레일리, Matt Wisler, and Colin Poche all pitching very well, but the Rays are certainly hoping to add Fairbanks into the mix and make him a key part of their relief corps. Fairbanks struck out nearly one-third of batters faced in 2020 and 2021, with five saves and a 3.25 ERA.

Outlier Saves

José Alvarado, PHI | RosterResource

It was a little bit surprising to not see Brad Hand get the last two outs of Sunday’s game in relief of Aaron Nola, but then again it was a 4-0 game and the Phillies only needed those two outs with two men on base. So it was Alvarado getting the save chance instead, and he struck out one of the two hitters faced to end the game for his first save of the year. The fireballing lefty has been brilliant since coming back from AAA in mid-June, with just three runs allowed in 13.2 innings, with 24 strikeouts. Walks are still an issue for him though, as he’s issued eight free passes in that time.

Committee Clarity

Kyle Finnegan, WSN | RosterResource

The clarity here is that there might be no committee in the post-Tanner Rainey era for the Nationals. Finnegan didn’t end up getting the save in the ninth once Juan Soto tacked on an insurance run with a homer in the bottom of the eighth, but he nonetheless was going to be used as the closer. Finnegan hasn’t been great from a run prevention standpoint, but he’s cut his walk rate down significantly from prior years while upping his strikeouts (albeit while allowing more homers than ever). He’s got just one save this year after 11 last year.
