Bullpen Report: July 11, 2021

NEW FEATURE ALERT! We have added an upgraded version of RosterResource’s Closer Depth Chart to FanGraphs. Read more about it here.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

The 2021 version of Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save.)

Notable Workloads

José Cisnero, DET: 31 pitches on Saturday. 3 of last 4 days. | RosterResource

Gregory Soto is the most likely candidate for a save opportunity if one comes up.

Lou Trivino, OAK: 26 pitches on Saturday. 2 of the last 3 days. | RosterResource

Jake Diekman is a likely candidate for a save opportunity if Trivino is unavailable.

Ian Kennedy, TEX: 12 pitches on Saturday. Back to back days. | RosterResource

Joely Rodríguez and Brett Martin are possibilities to be used in a save situation should Kennedy need a day off.

•Heath Hembree, CIN: 18 pitches on Saturday. Back to back days. 4 of the last 5 days. | RosterResource

Amir Garrett is likely to be called upon in a save opportunity if Hembree is unavailable.

Injury News

•None

Outlier Saves

Paul Sewald, SEA | RosterResource

Closer Kendall Graveman was likely unavailable after throwing two nights in a row giving Sewald, a “Reliever on the Rise”, the opportunity to add a second save to his season total. Sewald faced only three batters, recorded a strikeout, and needed only 12 pitches to close out the game. In the “Closer Chart” you will see Sewald listed as the first man up to get the save opportunity when Kendall Graveman is unavailable, and there’s no reason to believe that won’t continue in Seattle.

Committee Clarity

Heath Hembree, CIN | RosterResource

Hembree tacked on another save on Saturday night, giving him five saves in his last six outings. He gave up one walk, recorded a strikeout, and threw 18 pitches to 4 batters. We may soon need to stop writing about Hembree in the ‘Committee Clarity’ section as he has truly made a case to be the official closer.

Losing a Grip

•None

The way the Tigers have used Cisnero the last two games behind in non-save nor hold situations I’m getting the impression he is no longer the #1 option for saves going forward. Seems like they are fading him.
