Bullpen Report: April 30, 2014

Four rainouts and a few blowouts leave us with just a few items to discuss in this evening’s Bullpen Report.

Greg Holland dished a (pretty) clean ninth-inning to notch his seventh save of the season in a 4-2 Royals victory over the Blue Jays tonight. He induced two quick outs off the bats of Josh Thole and Jose Bautista before surrendering an Edwin Encarnacion double to deep center. But Dioner Navarro flied out to left stranding Encarnacion at the keystone sack and ending Toronto’s comeback bid. The Royals’ closer ends April a perfect 6-for-6 in save situations with a 2.70 ERA (1.68 xFIP).

Hector Rondon looked ready for his second save opportunity this season until the Cubs inexplicably tallied four runs — thanks to a few hits and a Joey Votto error — in the top of the ninth frame in Cincy. Rondon trotted to the mound in the non-save situation anyway and finished off the Reds on 18 pitches. Cumulatively, Rondon owns a 0.68 ERA (2.83 xFIP) in 12 trips to the bump (13.1 IP) with a 28.3% K% (7.5% BB%). Knowing that the right-hander’s last two appearances have each been in the ninth-inning — albeit both were non-save situations — and ended in victories for Chicago, I’d guess that he gets the ball the next time the Cubs are looking for a save. We know the Cubs are rarely in save situations — they have logged the second fewest save chances in the league (6), just one more than Tampa’s five — but Rondon is owned in just 18% of Y! leagues at the moment, making for a nice flier for those chasing saves.

-For the few of you that may follow me in my other endeavours either here at RotoGraphs or my own site, you probably are aware of how many times I recommend rostering middle relievers. It’s not for everyone, but middles are typically a good source of ratio support, they can pad your strikeouts, grab a scab win and even sneak in a save when a team’s regular closer is resting up.

When looking for middle relievers to consider, I simply do a sort of qualified relievers by K%. Entering tonight, three of the top six relievers in K% were non-closers and could be a fine add to your roster depending on your team’s needs. Dellin Betances (3% owned in Y!), Jordan Walden (5% owned in Y!) and Wade Davis (3% owned in Y!) are fanning 43.4%, 40.5% and 40.4% of the batters they face respectively. Walden owns the best ERA of the bunch (1.74) while Betances leads the trio in WHIP (0.98). Davis and Betances each have a win under their belt and Walden has picked up a save. None of them are perfect, but each of them have the ability to give your pitching staff some support if and when you need to run them out there. Definitely a strategy to consider if you’re pitching staff is weak or a bit banged up.

Quick Hits: Just as I was about to click publish, Kenley Jansen recorded his 10th save while cleaning up a mess created by Paco Rodriguez.

Bullpens starting to settle after crazy first month. Another will go green (Reds) in a week when Chapman returns.

What’s going on with Sergio Santos? People are dropping him like mad in Yahoo.

probably because he’s been struggling terribly of late…? my guess, anyway

Yeah I just dropped Santos myself to pick up Lindstrom. Should I have picked up Rondon instead?

Get Santos back. Don’t drop a guy for getting two ground balls.

Ruki Motomiya

Instead, drop him for his horrible career walk rate with horrible walk rate now, Casey Jannsen likely returning to reclaim the role and the fact Santos has been more bad than good in his career.

Get Santos back? That is awful advice!

In a H2H league where holds count I have been happy with Adam Ottavino early in the year. He is right behind the other three middle relievers listed.

7 holds 32K% 1.35 era .83 whip

Can Heath Bell really be considered next in line in TB, he’s been awful and seemingly relagated to mop up duty? Peralta and/or McGee have to be next and I think this is the next change coming

Just claimed Frieri off waivers, when will he get his gig back? Or will Smith run with it like the wind?

Is there any way to predict to which RPs are more likely to scab wins? Projections show an extra 4 wins over the remainder of the season could boost me 4.5 points in my 5×5 roto league. I currently have Cody Allen and Danny Farquhar as my closers in waiting, and more SP than I would like to use due to inning limits. Allen has scabbed as many wins as most of my starters so far, and finding someone else who can do that could make a significant difference.

not really.. i guess i would shoot for a team that has mediocre starting pitching and needs to use the bullpen a lot, thus giving you a better chance to get a win since they will pitch more innings. Orioles or Jays perhaps?

Yeah but don’t choose teams from the AL East Hitters’ Heavens.
Target NL teams in Pitchers’ Picnics.

To get reliever wins, look for good relievers pitching relatively low leverage situations on teams that have underperformed pythagorean wins. They don’t tend to remain in those situations for long either – esp if the rest of the bullpen is unsettled. Right now, the Angels/A’s/Marlins/Cubs/Reds look like they are gonna get some reliever wins – and Jepsen/Grimm/LeCure/Dunn could be the beneficiaries. In two weeks or a month, it will be different

I’m thinking of dropping Gregerson for Josh Beckett or Dallas Keuchel. I could use some SP help. Good move?

Satoshi Nakamoto

Do it. Gregerson is stinking up the joint.
Question is whether you think Beckett will be good this year because it’s his last guaranteed contract season…
I’m leaning towards yes.

also for solid middle men: Tyler Thronburg, and Jean Machi already has four vulture wins.

I noticed Machi, but I suspect he’s not a reliable source going forward.

Zach Britton looks interesting, but he’s in the AL East.

Machi has a decent K rate (well, low this year but a decent sswinging strike rate) and good groundball rate. Doesn’t throw ultra-hard but 93ish so not a soft-tosser. No serious platoon issues. He won’t vulture at this rate obviously, but he isn’t usually the Giants guy with a small lead, that’s casilla, javy lopez or affeldt, but when they are tied or close behind they go with Machi. Hence the wins. He’s good.

How about Drew Storen? The guys been lights out this year. K/9 of 11.17 and xFIP of 2.15. It’s a joke that they’re still throwing Clippard out there in the 8th. It looks like he’s returned to form.
