Brad Johnson Baseball Chat – 6/13/2017

Here’s today’s chat transcript. There was an unusual number of comments (i.e. any) about Napoleon Dynamite. I only published one of them.

2:58
Brad Johnson: What’s up folks? We’ll get started in a moment. I’m trying to decide who to cut for Clayton Richard in my dynasty league.

2:59
Clayton Richard: You don’t want me brah

2:59
Brad Johnson: I’ll provide a little background in a moment before I start answering questions

3:00
Brad Johnson: The cut is either Pat Corbin or James Shields fwiw

3:01
Brad Johnson: So, over the weekend Chad Young and I threw in the towel on 2017 in our 20-team, 45-player, keep-28 dynasty

3:02
Brad Johnson: We are in last place among the 12 or so “contending” rosters. We’ve had terrible luck – Miggy, Donaldson, JDM, Quintana, Aaron Sanchez, Carlos Sanchez, Story, Zobrist, Salazar, Morton, etc

3:03
Brad Johnson: Basically, the whole roster except Blackmon and Paxton have performed to their 25th percentile projection or worse

3:03
Brad Johnson: should have been a top 3 roster…

3:03
Brad Johnson: Anyway, the decision was made to pursue Mookie Betts which predictably cost a fortune

3:04
Brad Johnson: We traded Archer, Quintana, Donaldson, Bush, Doobie Herrera, and A.J. Ramos for Betts, Smoak, Godley, Ryu, Davidson, and Sogard

3:05
Brad Johnson: Admittedly, getting Godley was a sneaky throw-in. We think he has a shot to be the best pitcher in the deal.

3:05
Brad Johnson: Then we traded Miggy, C. Santana, and K. Herrera for Rizzo, Alex Kirilloff, and Kevin Merrell

3:05
Brad Johnson: Then Mike Leake and Nick Markakis for Chris Taylor and Jesus Sanchez

3:06
Brad Johnson: Long story short(ish), we’re low on pitchers.

3:06
Brad Johnson: And now…

3:06
fake newss: Thoughts on red hot, 27 year old, 2B/LF, SD Padre, Jose Pirela? Obviously not a sustainable .647 BABIP, but can he be a full time MLB player now? His super small sample contact quality is off the charts. 106.1 MPH avg EV on ground balls, 103.6 MPH avg EV on Low Drives, 105.7 MPH avg EV on High Drives, and 96.6 MPH avg EV on Fly Balls, and 0 popups. Numbers elevated immensely over previous seasons. K% only slightly elevated from previous MLB stint.

3:07
Brad Johnson: Pirela looks like he could be a legit breakout. I wouldn’t pay a ton for him, but if the only cost is a waiver add, go get him.

3:07
Brad Johnson: He’s a guy I’m trying to get right now in that dynasty league

3:07
Sim: Mccullers is at 70ish IP so far and all of last year he did 90ish. Do you see them capping him later in the season?

3:07
Brad Johnson: They’re pretty careful with him start-to-start

3:08
Brad Johnson: I think he gets to pitch whenever he’s healthy

3:08
curious: how you feel about a 2 start gerritt cole

3:08
Brad Johnson: Dangerous. He’s been so bad lately, looks like maybe he’s lost feel for his mechanics

3:08
Don: Is Procello droppable in a 10 team roto? I just dropped Lackey

3:09
Brad Johnson: Yea, probably. That can be a very shallow format, just depends how your leaguemates manage their bench

3:09
Hannah Hochevar: See anything in Alex Meyer? K’s and walks, but not horrible vs. that Yankees line-up yesterday. Velocity up slightly…

3:09
Brad Johnson: He throws hard, tosses 30+% curves, and has crappy command

3:09
Brad Johnson: He’s a streamer for 12-team leagues

3:10
Brad Johnson: I picked him up on that dynasty though

3:10
Brendan: Who do you think will be the closer in Washington after yet another implosion last night?

3:10
Brad Johnson: Eventually, Brad Hand, Kelvin Herrera, David Robertson, or similar

3:10
Brad Johnson: Still believe in Koda Glover too long term

3:10
Brad Johnson: stuff is nasty but inconsistent

3:10
Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe: What reasonably-calculable statistics are the best metrics to determining the most valuable players in my company softball league?

3:11
Brad Johnson: For hitters, hard contact rate and ability to hit to the opposite field

3:11
Brad Johnson: that’s always an automatic triple

3:11
Bobby: Cut Hanley in 12 team roto?

3:12
Brad Johnson: Can for the right player.

3:12
Brad Johnson: He probably should be owned by somebody in your league though

3:12
Brad Johnson: just isn’t necessarily you

3:12
Gene Belcher: Abreu and Judge for Goldy in an OPS league?

3:12
Brad Johnson: Tempting, especially if you need the steals

3:12
Brad Johnson: Seems like you should be able to get a modest plus with Goldy

3:12
Porcho Villa: Pick one 2B for rest of season: LeMahieu or Merrifield.

3:12
Brad Johnson: DJLM

3:13
Porcho Villa: Is Kenta Maeda droppable to speculate on SP or grab Kahnle?

3:13
Brad Johnson: Yep

3:13
Porcho Villa: Trevor Bauer is a divisive figure among FG writers. What’s your view on his prospects this year?

3:13
Brad Johnson: He’s pretty bad

3:13
Brad Johnson: FanGraphs folks like him because he’s thoughtful about pitching

3:13
Brad Johnson: But command is a constant issue for him

3:14
Scuba Steve: Would you drop Harvey for Godley in a keeper league?

3:14
Brad Johnson: Yes

3:14
Oh! Canada: Toronto’s pitching. How do you see Aaron Sanchez’s performance when he returns,? What will be Biagini’s role with the regular SP’s back??

3:14
Brad Johnson: I think Biagini stays in the rotation unless they’re managing his innings

3:14
Brad Johnson: He’s good enough to start

3:14
Rico: Obligatory Judge question….every keeps saying his pace is unsustainable…..but what if its not? It’s mid June and he hasn’t slowed down yet….

3:15
Brad Johnson: I mean, there will be some regression. A slump even. But he’s damned good

3:15
Brad Johnson: he’s a legit Giancarlo clone

3:15
Brad Johnson: with different holes

3:15
Gene Belcher: Like Pirela better than Lowrie or Simmons?

3:15
Brad Johnson: Simmons probably

3:15
Brad Johnson: it’s really hard to say what Pirela is right now

3:15
Brad Johnson: his success came at a super friendly Triple-A setting

3:15
Groot: Thanks for chatting, Brad. I’ve thrown in the towel on my 8 tm NL only keeper lg (H2H pts). I’m trying to structure a deal to send my Daniel Murphy for Syndergaard, whose owner is still competing. Is that deal fair alone, or should I be throwing in add’l player(s) to account for Thor’s long-term upside?

3:16
Brad Johnson: More than fair

3:16
Brad Johnson: It’s risky to bet upon hurt pitchers of any talent level

3:16
B: Judge or Machado? Two weeks ago the guy with the longer track record was suggested to be better. I declined the trade and am sure glad I did!

3:16
Brad Johnson: Judge

3:16
tip tipson : Mallex leads AL in SBs by end of season?

3:16
Brad Johnson: quite possibly

3:16
Brad Johnson: He’s a slightly less prolific Billy Hamilton

3:17
Brad Johnson: or perhaps Jose Peraza is the better comp

3:17
Brad Johnson: he throws away some ABs

3:17
Brad Johnson: falls behind and gets super defensive

3:17
samdmd: My Ian Kinsler for his Ian Desmond, who wins?

3:17
Brad Johnson: You? Maybe?

3:17
Brad Johnson: I don’t know tbh, solid challenge trade

3:17
Cee Jay: Travis is intrigued with Peacock..but needs a larger sample size…are you also hesitant?

3:18
Brad Johnson: The strikeouts are real(ish). The question is, multi-inning reliever or short-outing starter

3:18
Brad Johnson: I think he’s elite in the relief role and passable as a SP

3:18
Stinky Pete: Who do you like ROS, Chris Owings or Javy Baez?

3:18
Brad Johnson: push

3:18
Eric: How good do you think Godley is going to be? Ace potential or not quite?

3:18
Brad Johnson: No, not quite

3:18
Brad Johnson: Marcus Stroman?

3:19
Matt: Long term outlook in a dynasty: Lowrie or Pirela?

3:19
Brad Johnson: Uh, as much as I like ’em both right now, I’m not looking beyond a month for either of them

3:19
Fat Albert: With Chris Davis going down, will Trey Mancini be a 30+ HR, 100 RBI guy without even breaking 2 WAR this season?

3:19
Brad Johnson: HR barrage aside, he’s not that powerful

3:19
Brad Johnson: he’s more a 20-25 HR guy

3:19
tip tipson : Sam Travis the starting 1b next year? thoughts on him in an AL only setting

3:20
Brad Johnson: I like him in AL only. Kind of a second division starter in my opinion

3:20
Taylor: Who would you rather have for this year: Joe Ross, Newcomb, Faria, or Farmer?

3:20
Brad Johnson: Ross I guess

3:20
Brad Johnson: some upside there

3:20
Dingo Dan Dan: Mid-Season one Round Draft, Keeper League (no F/A moves allowed otherwise): Smoak, Alonso, ALtherr, M. Reynolds, Jimmy Nelson, Chase Anderson, Tim Beckham, LOMO. Who helps most ROS and who is best keeper in 25 man keeper format (with 25 round draft every year in dynasty)

3:21
Brad Johnson: Ooh tricky. Alonso is the best right now, closely followed by LoMo. Smoak seems good too, but there are some red flags

3:21
Brad Johnson: They’re all pretty old though

3:21
Brad Johnson: Altherr may be the better long term bet.

3:21
Brad Johnson: And see how Jimmy Nelson pitches today. He could be en route to a big season

3:22
Matt: Harper/Swanson/Daniel Norris or Correa/deGrom/Moncada/Rosenthal? Dynasty keep forever no cost 6×6 with OPS and QS added

3:22
Brad Johnson: Harper every time

3:22
Paul DePo: Starved for steals and the Billy Hamilton owner won’t trade him, so I’ve taken the Moneyball approach and added Mallex, Maybin, and Delino Jr. Should I be set?

3:22
Brad Johnson: Yes, very set

3:22
Johnny Appleseed : Too soon to ask the question.. Judge or Stanton??

3:22
Brad Johnson: Maybe. But I like Judge until he reveals his flaws

3:22
Oh! Canada: How about Aaron Sanchez ROS? Which tier of SP might he fall into? Thanks.

3:23
Brad Johnson: Second or third? He’s very good.

3:23
Brad Johnson: Could be rusty when he first returns

3:23
Jens: Lewis Brinson a 10-team redraft bat?

3:23
Brad Johnson: No. Streamable

3:23
Cee Jay: Most under owned pitcher (in most leagues) is…..?

3:23
Brad Johnson: I keep getting to recommend Zack Godley

3:23
Brad Johnson: there aren’t many quality SP floating around the waiver wire

3:24
Brad Johnson: everybody is drowning in injuries and underperformance

3:24
Cookie: Samardzija: hold or stream in 10-team? Also, start @Coors this week?

3:24
Brad Johnson: Hold and as needed at Coors

3:24
yasel puig: Am I worth keeping in NL-only?

3:24
Brad Johnson: Sure. though I’m not a fan

3:24
Lars: I’ve got Odor and DJLM as my 2B and MI in 10-team. Set and forget, or seek to upgrade?

3:25
Brad Johnson: Probably want to get an upgrade in place

3:25
starving for speed: Do you think Villar will have a FT job when he gets off the DL?

3:25
Brad Johnson: At first

3:25
Brad Johnson: definitely playing his way into a utility role

3:25
Micah: Can you see Eric Young Jr. doing some damage on the basepaths ROS?

3:25
Brad Johnson: Sure, if he can beat a .250 OBP. He’s a bad hitter

3:25
tip tipson : you think the minor league bash bros (hoskins / cozens) perform in the MLB?

3:25
Brad Johnson: Hoskins yes, Cozens no

3:26
Brad Johnson: Hoskins makes plenty of contact, Cozens has the Russell Branyan profile

3:26
Brad Johnson: It’s working for Gallo and Renfroe though

3:26
Porcho Villa: I recently dealt Verlander to get Thames. Thought it was a no-brainer but “God” has been in a long slump since April. Which side of the deal do you like better?

3:26
Brad Johnson: Thames

3:26
Turd Ferguson: Ryon Healy or Alex Bregman (ROS)?

3:26
Brad Johnson: Healy

3:26
Lucroy: Is it time to start worrying about my performance?

3:27
Brad Johnson: Oh yea. You’ve morphed into Francisco Cervelli

3:27
Carlos: A trade partner is weighing my Paxton/Benintendi/Kintzler for his Trout/Osuna. If I swap Bellinger for Benintendi it’d put it over the top. Good move? 12-team HtH. I’m in first, he’s around .500.

3:28
Brad Johnson: This isn’t a keeper? I’m hesitant to bet heavily on a busted hand. Even if it’s Mike Trout.

3:28
Tim: So, Nats bullpen. What’s a fantasy player to do? Avoid that dumpster fire altogether for the time being?

3:28
Brad Johnson: Pretty much

3:28
Tim: Related note – who are your top save spec guys right now?

3:29
Brad Johnson: Bedrosian, Kahnle, Neshek (if he counts), Phelps, Joe Kelly (in event of injury to Kimbrel), probably forgetting a couple

3:29
Ninja Black Sock: Zack Godley or Jaime Garcia just this year – better FIP?

3:29
Brad Johnson: Godley

3:29
Brad Johnson: not even a question

3:29
Tim: So I scooped up Brand Hand a few weeks ago when it was looking like he might be in line for some saves. Hasn’t done much since – you think he’s worth holding onto in a 12-team redraft?

3:29
Brad Johnson: Maybe, maybe not. Just depends on your specific situation

3:29
Brad Johnson: another case where somebody should own him, not necessarily you

3:30
Tim: Attack of corner infielders: Could you rank Bregman, V-Mart, Duda and Castellanos for RoS?

3:30
Brad Johnson: Duda Bregman no

3:30
Brad Johnson: JotCast apparently didn’t like my formating

3:30
Brad Johnson: Duda’s the only must-roster guy from that list

3:30
Linus: Time to stash Starling Marte in 10-team yet?

3:30
Brad Johnson: If you have the space, sure

3:30
Impatient man: Ian Happ or Tim beckham in an obp league? Yes it’s a bare cupboard.

3:30
Brad Johnson: Happ

3:31
Brad Johnson: Pirela is better though

3:31
Brad Johnson: or at least more interesting in an immediate sense

3:31
JC at the Bat: Chris Taylor – real or not. 10 team NL only dynasty – has to be worth something legit, right?

3:31
Brad Johnson: Too high BABIP and too many K to not worry about big regression

3:32
Brad Johnson: I’ve seen a lot of lazy comps to Justin Turner, but they’re nothing alike as hitters

3:32
Professor Donaldson: What are your thoughts on owning too many guys from 1 team? I’m desperate for speed and want to get Delino, but already have Odor/Mazara and feel like owning 3 Rangers is too much.

3:32
Brad Johnson: Nothing wrong with it in roto

3:32
Brad Johnson: you just want the end of season stats. You’ll have a lot of week to week volatility, but it washes out in the end

3:32
Brad Johnson: It’s a riskier ploy in H2H

3:33
Impatient manny: My Carpenter for his Justin Turner and addison Reed?

3:33
Brad Johnson: Do it

3:33
black hammer: Hey brad – thanks for the chat. Save spec-ing. Who do you like (can you rank these): soria, bearclaw, hand, vizcaino, doolittle?

3:33
Brad Johnson: Doolittle is a name I forgot on the earlier list. Soria, Doolittle, Hand, Viz

3:33
Brad Johnson: Bearclaw isn’t first in line for the Marlins. Or even second

3:33
Turd Ferguson: Battle of the DHs: Matt Holiday or Hanley Ramirez?

3:34
Brad Johnson: I’ll still take HanRam

3:34
Mike: Tanaka ROS: good or not-so-good?

3:34
Brad Johnson: Not

3:34
sam: I currently have nicasio as my 3rd RP in a 14 teamer, should I swap him out for Kahnle who is a free agent

3:34
Brad Johnson: Might sit just a little longer on Nicasio just in case

3:34
Brad Johnson: Kahnle is still over a month from a Robertson trade

3:34
HappyFunBall: The bottom of my rotation (10x mixed) is Hill, Nola, Pomeranz, and Guerra. All under performing for one reason or another. The best available FAs are probably Godley, Montgomery, Cahill Carns, and Biagini. Roll with what I’ve got or shuffle some guys around?

3:35
Brad Johnson: I’d shuffle to some of those free agents. Start with Guerra for Godley

3:35
Rico: My Mookie and Bellinger and a 2nd round pick for his Trout. Good deal or nah? 16T H2H Dynasty

3:35
Brad Johnson: Seems reasonable. Depends on how many players you get to keep

3:35
Professor Donaldson: In a dynasty league would you trade Javy Baez for Mallex Smith if you need SBs? Was hoping for more SBs out of Baez.

3:35
Brad Johnson: Sure

3:35
sam: Looking to trade away Kendrys Morales for a 1B to replace Chris Davis. Any you suggest going after?

3:36
Brad Johnson: What about Morales? I assume your format doesn’t let him be a 1B?

3:36
Brad Johnson: Alonso, LoMo, Smoak, Duda?

3:36
Drenjamin: What’s your opinion of Biagini, aside from his entertainingly awkward interviews?

3:37
Brad Johnson: Solid combo of whiffs and ground balls.

3:37
Team injured: Will the real Kyle Hendricks ever come back or should I try to trade him?

3:37
Brad Johnson: Be patient

3:37
Brad Johnson: because ain’t nobody going to pay for him anymore

3:37
Groot: Short and long term thoughts on Yelich? Counting stats aren’t too far off historical norms but avg is lagging. Simply a case of low babip?

3:37
Brad Johnson: I think so. He’s staying the same while all the other hitters are getting better

3:38
Hurting at SS: Drop Story for Simmons or Beckham, or give Story a little more time? Doing well in HR overall.

3:38
Brad Johnson: Keep Story

3:38
Marichal: Which NL SP should I pick up off the waiver wire: Cahill, Urias, or Finnegan?

3:38
Brad Johnson: Not up to date on Cahill’s recovery, but he’s probably the only one I’d bet on performing well

3:38
black hammer: my knebel for his justin turner? (saves are more valuable than they should be)

3:38
Brad Johnson: If you need the no SB 3B

3:38
Uncle Rico: Asdrubal Cabrera to the DL…..Rosario time?

3:39
Brad Johnson: Everybody wants to see Rosario. I don’t see a meaningful fantasy asset in his profile

3:39
Brad Johnson: Let Orlando Arcia serve as a warning

3:39
Bryan: Carlos Martinez for Khris Davis who wins?

3:39
Brad Johnson: Push, pending statistical needs of the owners involved

3:39
Dan: Will cueto surge in the second half or this is what he is

3:40
Brad Johnson: He’s been battling blisters. Could surge at any time if those clear up

3:40
fo real?: i got offered mark reynolds for chris sale today. i’m not sure how to react. i’m barely even mad, it’s just kinda funny.

3:40
Brad Johnson: I was grumpy last week, I offered $7 to keep Gallo and Ozuna for unkeepable Andrew Miller in a 6×6 with OPS and K/BB

3:41
Brad Johnson: counter offer was Miller for Sale

3:41
Jaake: Brad question about your stars and studs nad keepers strategy. What sort of percentage of budget should one not keep a stud player? Ex. I can keep Betts for $50, which is roughly 20% of the budget. In this scenario, is it better to keep someone like Devers, Wood, or Gleyber for $2 instead?

3:42
Brad Johnson: That’s a very tough puzzle to solve. I recommend crossing that bridge later

3:42
Cee Jay: Tampa just called up Faria…is this someone who should be owned in 10 teamers?

3:42
Brad Johnson: No

3:42
WaldoInSC: You’re not Travis Sawchik. In case you’re wondering.

3:42
Brad Johnson: So very true

3:42
Brad Johnson: Is Travis chatting now too?

3:43
Brad Johnson: I kinda squeeze these things in as my schedule allows. I don’t know what the others are doing, except that they aren’t fantasy focused

3:43
Napoleon: Rosario has more of an upside than say JP Crawford no? Or same skill set?

3:43
Brad Johnson: Yea, he does

3:43
Brad Johnson: but that’s not saying much

3:43
Brad Johnson: Nobody believed me about JPC last year…

3:44
Moltar: This time a week ago I was marvelling at how healthy and effective my pitching staff was. Now Keuchel and McCullers are down. Am I right to hope both are just having their innings managed since Houston is up so big in the division?

3:44
Brad Johnson: No, they’re hurt

3:44
Brad Johnson: but they may not be very serious injuries.

3:44
PabloLifer: Two buy lows over the weekend in NL only: 1) got Degrom for Harrison 2) got Schwarber for AJ Ramos and eickoff. Was I too hopeful?

3:44
Brad Johnson: Those are ridiculously favorable trades

3:44
Brad Johnson: I’m surprised vetoes weren’t used

3:45
WaldoInSC: He was promised. You’re lovely, of course, but I don’t play fantasy. I play reality.

3:45
Brad Johnson: I’m sure he’ll show up. Is he the FanGraphs After Dark host tonight?

3:45
Drenjamin: Are the recent power spikes of Schoop, Moustakas, and Bruce just flashes in the pan, or part of a “streaky hitter” profile?

3:45
Brad Johnson: Typical for who they are

3:45
PabloLifer: Tapia stays up? Count on for more than 15 sbs this year?

3:45
Brad Johnson: Playing time is an issue either way

3:45
PabloLifer: Over under 9 starts for Josh Hader

3:45
Brad Johnson: Under

3:46
ugh: wire is thin. drop pinder or motter for matt davidson or just hold?

3:47
Brad Johnson: Davidson is destroying LHP. Could probably drop Pinder. Kinda similar profiles except Davidson has a much friendlier home park

3:47
Loco: Sean Manaea a cat your’re holding or streaming in 10-team mixed?

3:47
Brad Johnson: Stream

3:47
Dan: What’s your take on taillon ROS?

3:47
Brad Johnson: Back end SP for 12-team

3:47
sam: edinson volquez vs. zack godley. who should i pick up?

3:47
Brad Johnson: Godley

3:48
Brad Johnson: Volquez is fine too. He’s a better bet to provide volume

3:48
Brad Johnson: Godley has a better ceiling and odds for wins

3:48
Tina: Any guys drafted yesterday have a shot at getting a call to the show this year? Read a couple guys have the skill set to contribute right away, like Bukauskas in the pen perhaps?

3:48
Brad Johnson: Very doubtful

3:49
Brad Johnson: Specifically related to Bukauskas, I was under the impression that he needs to be completely rebuilt from scratch

3:49
Zimmerboy: Keep Zimmer or drop for old man Beltran?

3:49
Brad Johnson: Probably holding Zimmer for now or hidden door #3

3:49
The Grifter: Are you the same Brad Johnson who also writes articles for Rotowire?

3:49
Brad Johnson: Nope, there are two of us

3:49
Brad Johnson: I write for Rotoworld though

3:49
Brad Johnson: Rotoworld/wire don’t play nicely

3:50
Brad Johnson: we’re in completely different fantasy baseball silos

3:50
Nicholas (Nick) Castellanos: You’re wrong about me. I will easily outrank V-Mart and Duda by years end. My xBABIP is way higher than my actual. I hit balls hard and I’m finally starting to get hot.

3:50
Brad Johnson: This has been true for what? Four years?

3:50
Brad Johnson: I’m tired of trusting our iffy models over my eyes

3:51
JC at the Bat: Traded Lamb/Bellinger/Wood for Yellich/W Myers and Kershaw in NL Only dynasty. Win/Lose or Fair?

3:51
Brad Johnson: that is a…rich trade

3:51
Brad Johnson: pretty tough to evaluate at the moment. I assume you both solved needs

3:51
Rob Dunne: Thoughts on Derek Fisher — any potential comp for production?

3:51
Brad Johnson: Big fan, no path to PT

3:52
Brad Johnson: Not sure if he’ll really run much in the majors

3:52
Brad Johnson: I don’t have an immediate comp coming to mind

3:52
Brad Johnson: Like with most young guys, there’s a risk it’ll take him time to make contact in the majors

3:52
Anthony: Is Jordan Montgomery 10-team legit…or am I just in love in a weird way?

3:53
Brad Johnson: I like Monty too, but he has some growing to do. Better as a streamer than a hold

3:53
Brad Johnson: Can be held though

3:53
Sawx Fan: 10 team NL-only. Zero pitching available. Hang onto Luke Weaver for dear life?

3:54
Brad Johnson: Uh…is he even alive?

3:54
Brad Johnson: I guess find out about whatever he injured on Sunday

3:54
Brad Johnson: Then start looking at some deep plays

3:54
Cards: Grabbed Adams after Freeman injury, and am wondering if you think he’ll play when Freddy gets back?

3:54
Brad Johnson: I don’t

3:54
Brad Johnson: He’s not a MLB starter

3:55
Brad Johnson: Basically a left-handed Mark Reynolds. Some desperate team will always need to fill a void

3:55
Nate: Bregman or Shaw at 3B? General thoughts on Shaw?

3:55
Brad Johnson: Shaw for now, Bregman through end of 2018

3:55
Brad Johnson: Shaw is a solid core performer with a good park and role

3:56
Don: drop Puig for Bellinger

3:56
Brad Johnson: 2 months ago? yes

3:56
Moltar: With some post-Davis lineup shuffling I will be down to 0 non-DL players on my bench. At what point do I have to consider cutting guys like Segura just to get a warm body in my lineup?

3:56
Brad Johnson: I don’t think you can cut a Segura

3:56
Brad Johnson: better to trade him

3:57
keeper thoughts: Any ideas of best prospect stash for SBs next year, outside of Albies?

3:57
Brad Johnson: Zack Granite comes to mind. Light-hitting speedster in Minnesota

3:57
Brad Johnson: should get some time later this year

3:57
Drenjamin: Would you rather have Stras or DeGrom RoS in a QS league?

3:57
Brad Johnson: Strasburg

3:57
Brad Johnson: Going to wrap this up soonish

3:58
Nicholas (Nick) Castellanos: OK. How about I already rank higher in most fantasy formats than either Duda or VMart and I haven’t even been good…..

3:58
Brad Johnson: Duda missed most of the season. He’s on a 40 homer pace, and he has easy 30 HR ability

3:58
Brad Johnson: Castellanos is waiver fodder in most 12-team formats

3:58
Brad Johnson: can be owned, doesn’t need to be

3:59
Robbie: Hey Brad, what do you think about Haniger/Maybin/Harrison ROS? I’m thinking maybin

3:59
Brad Johnson: I’m betting Haniger or Harrison

3:59
Brad Johnson: depending on my risk tolerance for that league

3:59
Moltar: At this point, can we safely say that Vargas is a solid back-end fantasy rotation piece? Or do you still think he’ll turn back in to a pumpkin?

3:59
Brad Johnson: No, he’s solid now

3:59
Matt: Cameron Maybin’s been a revelation this year in my OBP league and he’s running like crazy! Aside from the occasional DL stint, do you think he can keep this up? His OBP’s over .380 since the start of last season.

3:59
Brad Johnson: Not at this rate, but he’s a solid asset

4:00
Mason: Brad, should i trade Albies and De Leon for Brinson in dynasty league? I could then add Didi off waivers for a 2nd SS

4:00
Brad Johnson: Seems fine to me, but also not necessary

4:00
Brad Johnson: they’re all high risk/reward

4:00
The Kyd: Are you concerned about Gerrit Cole?

4:00
Brad Johnson: Yes

4:00
Tell me a Story: Story’s been awful. Should I zig and inquire on him as a really buy-low in a 20-team dynasty? I brought him up in trade talks with his owner preseason, and he was priced out of what I wanted to spend.

4:00
Brad Johnson: He won’t be available cheaply in 20-team dynasty

4:01
Brad Johnson: I mean, go ahead and try, but it’s not going to happen

4:01
The Kyd: Please tell me Mazara starts banging em over the fence with greater frequency?

4:01
Brad Johnson: Some day

4:01
Brad Johnson: It’s probably going to take years for the light to click

4:01
Brad Johnson: remember, he’s super young

4:01
Pie: Currently rebuilding in my first year of an inherited Ottoneu team. Lester is one of my last key players I’m looking to flip for future assets. I was offered Snell + a small (undetermined) piece, but that felt light. Is pursuing Julio Urias from that same team worth it, or is that too much to ask for a rental?

4:01
Brad Johnson: No, that’s perfectly reasonable

4:02
Brad Johnson: There’s no reason to trade good players for non-keepers like Snell

4:02
tip tipson : Gamel – thoughts?

4:02
Brad Johnson: Not really. Pretty boring volume guy

4:02
Turd Ferguson: Kinsler or Jose Ramirez for 2B?

4:02
Brad Johnson: Ramirez

4:02
Deb: Who is Dinelson Lamet? Yikes, I have no idea what to expect from him now….do you?

4:02
Brad Johnson: Yea

4:02
Brad Johnson: He has poor command of pretty decent stuff. Extremely volatile with a lot of meltdowns

4:03
Brad Johnson: decent deep dynasty stash – nothing more

4:03
Sawx Fan: Deep plays like Lamet, Pivetta, Perdomo? Lamet was a dumpster fire, and the other two aren’t much better.

4:03
Brad Johnson: I like all three of them long term. I think Lamet is a reliever though. Perdomo has GBs and Ks, just needs to cut down on HR

4:04
Brad Johnson: Pivetta reminds me of the 2016 version of Jose Berrios. I think a light could go off at some point in the future

4:04
Marcus: Tim Beckham a 10-team worthy MI, or too shallow?

4:04
Brad Johnson: Smells a tad shallow

4:04
Drenjamin: Is Eric Sogard for real?

4:04
Brad Johnson: I’m not sure. He was thrown into a dynasty deal for me and I originally planned to immediately discard him

4:05
Brad Johnson: upon closer consideration…I’m not sure

4:05
Porcho Villa: Duda or Belt for rest of this season?

4:05
Brad Johnson: Duda for power, Belt for the rest

4:05
Brad Johnson: Time to wrap it up

4:05
Bryan: sell high on elvis andrus or is this for real?

4:05
Brad Johnson: mostly real

4:05
RRH: Thoughts on Michael Brantley in a 10 teamer? He’s been decent (5 HRs + 7 SBs) but has had a rough past few weeks.

4:05
Brad Johnson: positive regression candidate

4:05
The Kyd: I’m a big fan of Healy and love his gap-to-gap power. Do you see him as capable of making adjustments/improvements this season to increase his productivity?

4:05
Brad Johnson: no, he’s already productive

4:05
Napoleon: Eat the food Tina!

While definitely nothing more than a single anecdote, I can attest to the fact that having too many players from the same team in a H2H points league can be a bad idea. I had a lot of Blue Jays on my team, and they went cold right during the second round of our playoffs. Kershaw was also only recently back from the DL, and was essentially on a low pitch count as well.

I had the best roster in the league, and an absolutely horrific run of injuries last year, but still had the best roster. After the season, when I looked at the free agents, it was sad seeing the number of top players I had to drop just to field a roster in the playoffs. There was basically a core of a team that I had to drop.

Things had gotten so bad, that I had to pick up guys I’d never even heard off from free agency just to field a lineup for the first round. I pulled out the win. The first week of round 2 of the playoffs seemed to be when the Jays were at their worst. I faced a pretty big deficit going into week 2, but a few guys got healthy, some of the Jays played at least passably, and Kershaw got to pitch deeper into games. I almost came back, but fell just short.

Looking at my roster now, I think I’m going to swing some trades. I may do some add/drops closer to the end of the year. But I’ve got a lot of guys from Houston, Colorado, Oakland, and Milwaukee right now. I don’t plan on doing any too drastic, because some guys are gonna have to get traded for low-level draft picks next year, or outright dropped, when some guys come back from injury. AJ Pollock, Danny Duffy, and Freddie Freeman will help clear up some of that log jam.

In the end, talent is talent, though. You absolutely could win in H2H points with lots of players from the same team. You just have to hope that they’re either playing to their talent level, or they’re playing out of their minds like the Rocktober Rockies. A cold streak like the Jays went on last season could easily sink you in the playoffs.
