JC at the Bat: Hi Brad –  10 Team NL only auction.  Deciding between my last 2 keepers.  I am thinking either Strop / AJ Minter (theoretically could not have to bid on a closer) or L Castillo / Marquez (2 low floor, high ceiling lottery picks).  The Auction calculator say to go with the latter, and I hate wasting keeper spots on closers….but SAVES!  Any advice?

Brad Johnson: Definitely go for the SP

Brad Johnson: I think I still prefer Marquez by a small margin (was asked the same Castillo or Marquez in past weeks)

Brad Johnson: They’re both very talented pitchers with some ballpark and track record issues.

Brad Johnson: Could honestly flip a coin too

Trout: Do you see Alonso breaking camp with the Mets?

Brad Johnson: I don’t think so. Dom Smith is playing well and even giving him just 2 weeks without competition seems like a “nice” reward

Dave in London: Thanks for chatting Brad. Thoughts on Vogelbach? Do you see him getting major playing time this year, even though he struggles to hit LHPs?

Brad Johnson: Until Seager comes back, there’s an obvious role for him.

Brad Johnson: So I do think he’ll play

Brad Johnson: He’s out of options so the alternatives are to let him rot on the bench or expel him

Flop: Dynasty league: Sevy, Julio Urias and Spencer Howard for Cole, Peacock and Lamet?

Flop: Dynasty League: Glasnow and Jose Suarez for Alcantara and Bieber?

Brad Johnson: That second one is tricky. I think I like the Bieber gamble a little more although the Glasnow side may be a slightly better 2019 play

Mike Trout’s taxes: In a dynasty: Dustin Fowler or Hunter Dozier?

Brad Johnson: I don’t foresee many scenarios where Dozier becomes more than a patch-in guy

Brad Johnson: He may have a better opportunity than Fowler in 2019, but Fowler has the better chance to become a decent player

Brad Johnson: I skipped the Sevy question… I’d take the Sevy side. I prefer Urias over Peacock more than I like Lamet over Howard

Matthew: I’m in an 8 team league. Think it’s a viable strategy to spend 1/2 my budget on 3 players and eventually fill the last 13-ish spots with $1 guys? I’ll probably load on hitting.

Brad Johnson: Yes.

Brad Johnson: Rep level is ridiculously high

Brad Johnson: Just spend what you have to for Trout

Brad Johnson: I don’t care if he costs $100. Losing Trout in that format is a mistake

Matthew: Robles ($1) and Matt Chapman ($5) for Bregman ($19) and Treinen ($1). Which side do you like most?

Brad Johnson: Would need to know league depth and goals. Bregman side comes out the winner in most scenarios.

Logan: 16 team dynasty, I have Jake Lamb and Kyle Seager at 3B, should I drop one of them for Jung Ho Kang considering their injuries and his hot spring?

Brad Johnson: That’s a reasonable move. However, I worry Kang isn’t going to have a long run as the starter with Moran, Hayes, and a slew of utility guys nipping at his heels.

Vader: Do you think Paddack or Whitley are worth a late round pick in H2H keep 5 player league?

Brad Johnson: Paddack absolutely should be picked because he’s increasingly likely to make the team

Brad Johnson: I don’t think you need to go out of your way to grab Whitley. If he happens to land on your roster, fine. But I would focus on more active guys then try to anticipate when the Astros will call him up

Canned Peanuts: Thoughts on Ryan Brasier in a league that counts both saves and holds?

Brad Johnson: Thumbs up? He’s seemingly a solid pitcher and he’ll get saves and/or holds.

Brad Johnson: I’m not going to gush about him like I do for Ryan Pressly, but he’s viable.

Vader: SP who qualify as RP in h2h…how do you rank Stripling, Maeda, Strahm, Woodruff and Keller?

Brad Johnson: Flip Keller and Woodruff. It’s in order

Moonlight Graham: 12 team H2H obp league.  Should I add G. Hampson and drop J. Polanco for him?  (I also have C. Taylor).

Brad Johnson: I typed out “nah,” but this is actually a typical “it depends”

Brad Johnson: Do you need SB

Brad Johnson: If so, Hampson might be a solid play

Brad Johnson: Personally, I’d stick with Polanco in most situations

Brad Johnson: I prefer a plug and play guy in H2H. With Taylor and Hampson likely platooning, you’ll have days where neither start.

Simon: we’re having a Quality Starts vs Wins debate in our Dynasty Points league. Someone suggested making wins 5 instead of 10 and QS 5 as well.

Brad Johnson: That’s not unreasonable

Brad Johnson: It is slightly more difficult to manage though

KeepBangin24/7: Good afternoon Brad.   I took Caleb Smith, Anthony Descalafani and Merril Kelly late in my draft.  Any chance any of them hit and become strong starting pitchers for me this season?

Brad Johnson: I’m mostly over DeSclafani unless something changes. Smith and Kelly are popular sleepers in the industry. I have a few shares of both even though I wouldn’t describe them as “my guys.” I think Smith will be pretty bland with strikeouts as a potential plus category

Brad Johnson: wins an easy negative, ERA and WHIP probably negative

Brad Johnson: Kelly is obviously more of a black box, we’ll just have to suck it and see.

Brad Johnson: (that’s a real thing Brits say. With a straight face.)

Max Scherzer: With fewer starting pitchers going distance, what are your thoughts on going early on top SP in a 10 team snake draft.  Our league counts QS among standard 5×5 categories.  H2H league.

Brad Johnson: In shallow H2H, I LOVE building super rotations

Brad Johnson: If you can control the SP categories, pick up 75% of the saves wins, and focus on dominating SB/R/AVG, you can easily win almost every week

Brad Johnson: You might seed in as the 2nd or 3rd team, but you’ll be hard to beat

Pike Trout: Would you trade Hoskins for Berrios and Corbin in 12 team keep forever OPS league? Your odds of him ending up a top tier fantasy player?

Brad Johnson: Seems reasonable. I do like Hoskins a lot and would only go for the swap if I botched my rotation.

chet: digging deep in dynasty. mainly concerned about 2019…domingo german, freddy peralta or…teheran? Teheran’s velo is up this spring.

Brad Johnson: If you’re not focusing on future considerations, I might lean Teheran with a plan to stream that spot

Brad Johnson: If it’s a weekly league, then go looking for 2-start guys

MookieBestt: Is Steven Duggar anything with the leadoff job in SF and high end sprint speed? I’m looking very deep for some steals.

Brad Johnson: Like 20 SBs? I’m more concerned about him holding that role. He’s… not a good hitter.

Brad Johnson: Absolutely. I usually try to go very heavy on pitching if the league is 12 team or shallower

Turgid: What do you think about this auction strategy? The elite talent is in SS, 3B, and OF, so spend to get a top guy in each. 1B and 2B are deep, but not so elite, so don’t spend here, just grab the cheap guys that falls.

Brad Johnson: Typically, the approach is to go elite at the shallow spots, and take advantage of the higher rep level at deeper positions

Brad Johnson: That said, I’m not seeing 1B or 2B play shallower than the others.

Yankmee honk: I just read where Clint Frazier will amount to nothing more than a 4th OF.  I seem to think he has more potential than that given opportunity.  Thoughts?

Brad Johnson: Yankees have to set him free first.

Brad Johnson: If they squander his peak seasons on the bench, then yea, he probably won’t be more than a 4th OFer

Rockies fan: I’m excited for all the young players in Colorado as well as Nolan sticking around, but do you think we see B.Rodgers this year?  I’m guessing maybe not with Hampson/McMahon, but holding out hope

Brad Johnson: The outlook on Rodgers tends to vary wildly depending on who you talk to

Brad Johnson: There’s certainly a lot of red flags in his profile

Brad Johnson: So his adjustment to the majors almost certainly won’t be clean

Philly fanatic: Tell me Scott Kingery will improve upon last year.  Not a huge commitment from the Phillies, but a commitment nonetheless.  Serviceable?

Guest: On Saturday I drafted in a 12 team Yahoo “pro” league.  I grabbed Kershaw at the end of round 9. Is he falling too far in drafts? Seems crazy to get him that late.

Brad Johnson: Probably falling a little too far. Time will tell I suppose

Don Von Handburger: Should I take Justin Upton to be my 4th OF and part-time Util, or Grandal to be my starting C?

Brad Johnson: Seems like a fairly shallow league. I’d nab Grandal and trust other bats will be there for UT work

Brad Johnson: I like ’em both although I somehow have zero shares of either

Lee: Most value this season (normal 5×5 rot) – Anthony Alford, Cavan Biggio, or Matt Thaiss?

Brad Johnson: I don’t really expect any of them to contribute in 2019. Lemme double check real quick though.

Brad Johnson: Yea, I think you need a new list

Brad Johnson: Alford’s like an 8th OFer, can’t hit. Scouts uniformly hate Biggio, although he’s getting to that point where if he keeps performing, they’ll have to change their tune.

Brad Johnson: Still, it’s not hard to see the fault lines in his stats. Thaiss is maybe a league average hitter and very thoroughly blocked

Madre Padre: How do you think Renfroe fares in our crowded OF?  I liked how he finished last season and if you can x2 that, you have an all-star.

Turgid: What I meant about elite versus depth at positions is that the guys that are worth $40+ are in SS, 3B, and OF. All infield positions have 8-10 guys worth ~$20. If I’m spending at the top end I want a $40 guy. Otherwise I’ll get the last $20 guy that people forget about for $10.

Brad Johnson: If that’s how your drafts work, sure

Winter Sucks: Given the drops in quality, if you had a choice of getting one elite corner in an auction (1B, 3B, and CI positions open) would you go with one of Goldy/Freddie with most 1B options available or Arenado if all the next best 3B are going until you get down to Carpenter?  I can more or less focus on only one unless I want to go really stars and scrubs (which is dangerous; 16-team mixed, 5×5 roto).

Brad Johnson: I think you’re thinking too hard

Brad Johnson: Phillies have a stacked 8-man pen and Pivetta seems like a classic “get him out before the third time” guy

John: Brad, I am in a 4×4 11 team keeper lg.  No R or K. It is half AL and half NLWe have 23 roster spots, no bench, unlimited DL. Budget is 26$ instead of 260$. I have Trea Turner at 4.70 this year with option to keep at 5.20 or 5.70 for 2 more or 3 more years. Worth it?

Brad Johnson: Losing runs is a huge category for him

Brad Johnson: I don’t have much sense for how inflation might run in this league. Turner is probably like $36 or so in redraft of that format

Brad Johnson: If you have to run the option now, I probably pass

Brad Johnson: If you can run at the end of the year, the $52 version might be a not-terrible waste of money. Again, kinda depends on inflation

Underpaid Trout: What side in a 14 team keep forever league do you prefer?   Trout or Altuve Vlad Jr, & Buehler?

Brad Johnson: Vlad

Brad Johnson: That’s a nice haul for Trout, a rare instance I’d seriously consider disaggregating him

Brad Johnson: That said, it’s not a strong preference. You can try to hold out for more if you want to pinch pennies

Acmcdowell: Will anyone in the Royals pen manage 10 saves?  The team looks like a mess and the closer situation is even worse. Neither Boxberger nor Peralta look like they can actually throw strikes.

Brad Johnson: Box looks like he could be fine in a large park and bad division

Tim: 12-team auction, 7×7. $300. 4 OF spots plus UTIL. Keeping Bregman/Soto/Acuna/Benintendi for total of $88, giving me $212 for 21 remaining spots. What’s the maximum bid I could make for Trout without tanking the rest of my draft?

Brad Johnson: Close to $100? Lemme scratch out some maths

Brad Johnson: Yea, I think you could go to around $100 without negatively affecting your team

Brad Johnson: He’s a $70 player in the format without inflation

Brad Johnson: thereabouts

Brad Johnson: just make sure you pivot to pitching with the rest of your cash reserves
