Brad Johnson: Let’s get the queue rolling. We’ll start in a few minutes.

JC at the Bat: Hi Brad – 10 Team NL only auction. Deciding between my last 2 keepers. I am thinking either Strop / AJ Minter (theoretically could not have to bid on a closer) or L Castillo / Marquez (2 low floor, high ceiling lottery picks). The Auction calculator say to go with the latter, and I hate wasting keeper spots on closers….but SAVES! Any advice?
3:53 |
Brad Johnson: Definitely go for the SP
3:53 |
Brad Johnson: I think I still prefer Marquez by a small margin (was asked the same Castillo or Marquez in past weeks)
3:53 |
Brad Johnson: They’re both very talented pitchers with some ballpark and track record issues.
3:54 |
Brad Johnson: Could honestly flip a coin too
3:54 |
Trout: Do you see Alonso breaking camp with the Mets?
3:54 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t think so. Dom Smith is playing well and even giving him just 2 weeks without competition seems like a “nice” reward
3:55 |
Dave in London: Thanks for chatting Brad. Thoughts on Vogelbach? Do you see him getting major playing time this year, even though he struggles to hit LHPs?
3:55 |
Brad Johnson: Until Seager comes back, there’s an obvious role for him.
3:55 |
Brad Johnson: So I do think he’ll play
3:56 |
Brad Johnson: He’s out of options so the alternatives are to let him rot on the bench or expel him
3:56 |
Flop: Dynasty league: Sevy, Julio Urias and Spencer Howard for Cole, Peacock and Lamet?
3:56 |
Flop: Dynasty League: Glasnow and Jose Suarez for Alcantara and Bieber?
3:56 |
Brad Johnson: That second one is tricky. I think I like the Bieber gamble a little more although the Glasnow side may be a slightly better 2019 play
3:57 |
Mike Trout’s taxes: In a dynasty: Dustin Fowler or Hunter Dozier?
3:57 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t foresee many scenarios where Dozier becomes more than a patch-in guy
3:57 |
Brad Johnson: He may have a better opportunity than Fowler in 2019, but Fowler has the better chance to become a decent player
3:58 |
Brad Johnson: I skipped the Sevy question… I’d take the Sevy side. I prefer Urias over Peacock more than I like Lamet over Howard
3:58 |
Matthew: I’m in an 8 team league. Think it’s a viable strategy to spend 1/2 my budget on 3 players and eventually fill the last 13-ish spots with $1 guys? I’ll probably load on hitting.
3:59 |
Brad Johnson: Rep level is ridiculously high
3:59 |
Brad Johnson: Just spend what you have to for Trout
4:00 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t care if he costs $100. Losing Trout in that format is a mistake
4:00 |
Matthew: Robles ($1) and Matt Chapman ($5) for Bregman ($19) and Treinen ($1). Which side do you like most?
4:00 |
Brad Johnson: Would need to know league depth and goals. Bregman side comes out the winner in most scenarios.
4:00 |
Logan: 16 team dynasty, I have Jake Lamb and Kyle Seager at 3B, should I drop one of them for Jung Ho Kang considering their injuries and his hot spring?
4:01 |
Brad Johnson: That’s a reasonable move. However, I worry Kang isn’t going to have a long run as the starter with Moran, Hayes, and a slew of utility guys nipping at his heels.
4:01 |
Vader: Do you think Paddack or Whitley are worth a late round pick in H2H keep 5 player league?
4:01 |
Brad Johnson: Paddack absolutely should be picked because he’s increasingly likely to make the team
4:03 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t think you need to go out of your way to grab Whitley. If he happens to land on your roster, fine. But I would focus on more active guys then try to anticipate when the Astros will call him up
4:03 |
Canned Peanuts: Thoughts on Ryan Brasier in a league that counts both saves and holds?
4:03 |
Brad Johnson: Thumbs up? He’s seemingly a solid pitcher and he’ll get saves and/or holds.
4:03 |
Brad Johnson: I’m not going to gush about him like I do for Ryan Pressly, but he’s viable.
4:03 |
Vader: SP who qualify as RP in h2h…how do you rank Stripling, Maeda, Strahm, Woodruff and Keller?
4:04 |
Brad Johnson: Flip Keller and Woodruff. It’s in order
4:04 |
Moonlight Graham: 12 team H2H obp league. Should I add G. Hampson and drop J. Polanco for him? (I also have C. Taylor).
4:04 |
Brad Johnson: I typed out “nah,” but this is actually a typical “it depends”
4:05 |
Brad Johnson: Do you need SB
4:05 |
Brad Johnson: If so, Hampson might be a solid play
4:05 |
Brad Johnson: Personally, I’d stick with Polanco in most situations
4:06 |
Brad Johnson: I prefer a plug and play guy in H2H. With Taylor and Hampson likely platooning, you’ll have days where neither start.
4:06 |
Simon: we’re having a Quality Starts vs Wins debate in our Dynasty Points league. Someone suggested making wins 5 instead of 10 and QS 5 as well.
4:06 |
Brad Johnson: That’s not unreasonable
4:06 |
Brad Johnson: It is slightly more difficult to manage though
4:06 |
KeepBangin24/7: Good afternoon Brad. I took Caleb Smith, Anthony Descalafani and Merril Kelly late in my draft. Any chance any of them hit and become strong starting pitchers for me this season?
4:08 |
Brad Johnson: I’m mostly over DeSclafani unless something changes. Smith and Kelly are popular sleepers in the industry. I have a few shares of both even though I wouldn’t describe them as “my guys.” I think Smith will be pretty bland with strikeouts as a potential plus category
4:08 |
Brad Johnson: wins an easy negative, ERA and WHIP probably negative
4:08 |
Brad Johnson: Kelly is obviously more of a black box, we’ll just have to suck it and see.
4:09 |
Brad Johnson: (that’s a real thing Brits say. With a straight face.)
4:09 |
Max Scherzer: With fewer starting pitchers going distance, what are your thoughts on going early on top SP in a 10 team snake draft. Our league counts QS among standard 5×5 categories. H2H league.
4:09 |
Brad Johnson: In shallow H2H, I LOVE building super rotations
4:10 |
Brad Johnson: If you can control the SP categories, pick up 75% of the saves wins, and focus on dominating SB/R/AVG, you can easily win almost every week
4:10 |
Brad Johnson: You might seed in as the 2nd or 3rd team, but you’ll be hard to beat
4:11 |
Pike Trout: Would you trade Hoskins for Berrios and Corbin in 12 team keep forever OPS league? Your odds of him ending up a top tier fantasy player?
4:11 |
Brad Johnson: Seems reasonable. I do like Hoskins a lot and would only go for the swap if I botched my rotation.
4:12 |
chet: digging deep in dynasty. mainly concerned about 2019…domingo german, freddy peralta or…teheran? Teheran’s velo is up this spring.
4:12 |
Brad Johnson: If you’re not focusing on future considerations, I might lean Teheran with a plan to stream that spot
4:12 |
Brad Johnson: If it’s a weekly league, then go looking for 2-start guys
4:13 |
MookieBestt: Is Steven Duggar anything with the leadoff job in SF and high end sprint speed? I’m looking very deep for some steals.
4:13 |
Brad Johnson: Like 20 SBs? I’m more concerned about him holding that role. He’s… not a good hitter.
4:14 |
chet: worth holding kingham in dynasty? shallow benches
4:14 |
Brad Johnson: Briefly, especially if you’re streaming that Teheran spot we discussed
4:14 |
Daniel Castro: Do you love me any more now that I’m a Dodger?
4:15 |
Brad Johnson: I’ll look a few times to see if anything is happening. But only because you harass me 🙂
4:15 |
Brad Johnson: You should have jumped ship for Willians
4:15 |
Dave: Do you fundamentally change your auction strategy in a H2H league?
4:15 |
Brad Johnson: Absolutely. I usually try to go very heavy on pitching if the league is 12 team or shallower
4:16 |
Avon Barksdale: Will Tyler O’Neill be relevant this year?
4:16 |
Brad Johnson: Yes. If only as a streamer versus against fastball-centric pitchers.
4:16 |
Brad Johnson: Look at his performance against fastballs on BrooksBaseball
4:16 |
Brad Johnson: He’s Pedro Cerrano
4:16 |
Matt Klentak: Mike Trout is the first player in baseball history to leave 100M on the table in consecutive deals. Does he have the worst agent in baseball? Im sure the MLBPA hate the news this morning
4:17 |
Brad Johnson: I doubt they’re upset. Personally, I think it was a slam dunk deal for Trout.
4:17 |
Turgid: What do you think about this auction strategy? The elite talent is in SS, 3B, and OF, so spend to get a top guy in each. 1B and 2B are deep, but not so elite, so don’t spend here, just grab the cheap guys that falls.
4:18 |
Brad Johnson: Typically, the approach is to go elite at the shallow spots, and take advantage of the higher rep level at deeper positions
4:18 |
Brad Johnson: That said, I’m not seeing 1B or 2B play shallower than the others.
4:19 |
Yankmee honk: I just read where Clint Frazier will amount to nothing more than a 4th OF. I seem to think he has more potential than that given opportunity. Thoughts?
4:19 |
Brad Johnson: Yankees have to set him free first.
4:19 |
Brad Johnson: If they squander his peak seasons on the bench, then yea, he probably won’t be more than a 4th OFer
4:19 |
Rockies fan: I’m excited for all the young players in Colorado as well as Nolan sticking around, but do you think we see B.Rodgers this year? I’m guessing maybe not with Hampson/McMahon, but holding out hope
4:20 |
Brad Johnson: The outlook on Rodgers tends to vary wildly depending on who you talk to
4:20 |
Brad Johnson: There’s certainly a lot of red flags in his profile
4:20 |
Brad Johnson: So his adjustment to the majors almost certainly won’t be clean
4:20 |
Philly fanatic: Tell me Scott Kingery will improve upon last year. Not a huge commitment from the Phillies, but a commitment nonetheless. Serviceable?
4:20 |
Brad Johnson: For fantasy purposes, probably not
4:20 |
Brad Johnson: I think he’ll be better in a real capacity
4:21 |
Brad Johnson: And maybe one of the better utility guys in the league
4:21 |
Ketchup: Am I really such a weirdo for thinking that strikeouts are thrilling?
4:21 |
Brad Johnson: I used to feel this way
4:21 |
Brad Johnson: Back when David Robertson’s 10.5 K/9 as a non-closer was unheard of
4:21 |
Brad Johnson: Like anything, familiarity breeds contempt
4:22 |
Brad Johnson: (same for home runs)
4:22 |
Brad Johnson: These days, I want to see an entire league of Willians Astudillo
4:22 |
Backend starter: Better back end starter in 2019 for San Diego? Strahm or Paddock?
4:22 |
Brad Johnson: Paddack, but Strahm is looking like a fun bet too
4:22 |
King Donko: swap Heaney for J. Urias? QS, Sv+Hld league
4:23 |
Brad Johnson: Can probably swap back if Urias doesn’t nab a SP role
4:23 |
Guest: On Saturday I drafted in a 12 team Yahoo “pro” league. I grabbed Kershaw at the end of round 9. Is he falling too far in drafts? Seems crazy to get him that late.
4:23 |
Brad Johnson: Probably falling a little too far. Time will tell I suppose
4:23 |
Don Von Handburger: Should I take Justin Upton to be my 4th OF and part-time Util, or Grandal to be my starting C?
4:24 |
Brad Johnson: Seems like a fairly shallow league. I’d nab Grandal and trust other bats will be there for UT work
4:24 |
Don Von Handburger: Yu like Yu Darvish or Robbie Ray-Ray this year?
4:24 |
Brad Johnson: I like ’em both although I somehow have zero shares of either
4:24 |
Brad Johnson: So I guess I don’t like ’em much
4:24 |
Lee: Most value this season (normal 5×5 rot) – Anthony Alford, Cavan Biggio, or Matt Thaiss?
4:25 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t really expect any of them to contribute in 2019. Lemme double check real quick though.
4:26 |
Brad Johnson: Yea, I think you need a new list
4:27 |
Brad Johnson: Alford’s like an 8th OFer, can’t hit. Scouts uniformly hate Biggio, although he’s getting to that point where if he keeps performing, they’ll have to change their tune.
4:27 |
Brad Johnson: Still, it’s not hard to see the fault lines in his stats. Thaiss is maybe a league average hitter and very thoroughly blocked
4:28 |
Madre Padre: How do you think Renfroe fares in our crowded OF? I liked how he finished last season and if you can x2 that, you have an all-star.
4:29 |
Brad Johnson: But playing time is very much a concern in 2019.
4:29 |
Brad Johnson: Could easily see Franmil and Myers completely usurping him.
4:29 |
Don Von Handburger: If you were an A’s fan and bought a reptile, would you name it Jesus Lizardo?
4:29 |
Brad Johnson: Absolutely have thought about this
4:30 |
dave in slc: where do you see the shallow spots that you would try to go elite?
4:30 |
Brad Johnson: ace is the most obvious
4:31 |
Brad Johnson: 1B drops considerably after Goldy/Freeman
4:31 |
Big Tuna : Who’s the closer for the White Sox? The Royals?
4:31 |
Brad Johnson: Colome and Boxberger?
4:31 |
Brad Johnson: Box is dealing with something, I think he’s supposed to miss opening week
4:31 |
Brad Johnson: Which means Peralta barf
4:31 |
Brad Johnson: Colome has to hold off Jones and Kelvin
4:32 |
Turgid: In a 12 team 1 catcher league, there’s no reason to spend more than $1 on catcher right?
4:32 |
Brad Johnson: There’s some scope for spending a couple bucks on Grandal or if you mismanage the elite rounds spending on Realmuto
4:32 |
C’mon Sign Already: If Kimbrel sits out until after the draft, he’ll really regret it. Agree/Disagree?
4:33 |
Matt: What if you were a Pad’s fan, and bought a rodent, would it be Ferret Richards?
4:33 |
Brad Johnson: I had NOT thought about this scenario
4:33 |
Brad Johnson: but now it’ll never leave my head
4:33 |
dave in slc: follow up, how many aces are there or who do you consider aces?
4:34 |
Brad Johnson: Pretty much anything that goes before Greinke
4:34 |
Matt: Which hitter are you drafting first – Bogaerts, Votto, or Khris Davis?
4:34 |
Brad Johnson: Very format specific
4:34 |
Brad Johnson: FGpts, gimme Votto
4:34 |
Brad Johnson: Most of the time, Bogaerts for 5×5 roto
4:34 |
Brad Johnson: But if I need HR then it could be Davis
4:34 |
Brad Johnson: Context is king
4:35 |
Andrew: Is this Devers breakout year? Or will he be someone more like Edwin Encarnacion who peaks in his late 20s?
4:35 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t think this is a fair either or
4:35 |
Brad Johnson: He could just improve steadily
4:35 |
Brad Johnson: He was already stealth good last year
4:35 |
Brad Johnson: Just got outshined at a very deep position
4:35 |
Matthew: I want to draft Luzardo just for the Jesus Lizardo team name pun now. I’ll photoshop a lizard head on his body for my team image.
4:36 |
Brad Johnson: Put King K.Rool in an Athletics jersey
4:36 |
Turgid: What I meant about elite versus depth at positions is that the guys that are worth $40+ are in SS, 3B, and OF. All infield positions have 8-10 guys worth ~$20. If I’m spending at the top end I want a $40 guy. Otherwise I’ll get the last $20 guy that people forget about for $10.
4:36 |
Brad Johnson: If that’s how your drafts work, sure
4:36 |
Brad Johnson: Mine sure don’t look like that
4:37 |
Winter Sucks: Given the drops in quality, if you had a choice of getting one elite corner in an auction (1B, 3B, and CI positions open) would you go with one of Goldy/Freddie with most 1B options available or Arenado if all the next best 3B are going until you get down to Carpenter? I can more or less focus on only one unless I want to go really stars and scrubs (which is dangerous; 16-team mixed, 5×5 roto).
4:37 |
Brad Johnson: I think you’re thinking too hard
4:37 |
Brad Johnson: Just take Arenado
4:37 |
Bargain Hunter: Are their any 4’s or 5s SP you are targeting late rounds that could provide 2or 3 value? and whom?
4:38 |
Brad Johnson: In no particular order Anibal Sanchez, Trevor Cahill, Chris Paddack, Matt Strahm, Joe Musgrove, Brad Keller (technically a 1 for the Royals)
4:39 |
Matt: ‘Twas for 7×7 roto. Apologies for lack of context. Thanks for the answer!
4:39 |
Brad Johnson: You say that as if there is such a thing as a standard 7×7 roto 🙂
4:39 |
Know Knuthing Kannuck Riggs: Given a $150 budget in a 16-team 5×5, is $29 too much to pay for Harper?
4:40 |
Brad Johnson: Can’t say I have internalized values for that. Smells OKish. Let me try a different smell test
4:41 |
Brad Johnson: Uh, auction calc says $12
4:41 |
Brad Johnson: Trout’s only $23
4:41 |
Brad Johnson: Those are probably low, but I think it’s safe to say $29 is too much
4:41 |
Nate: Is Matt Barnes undervalued in fantasy formats?
4:41 |
Brad Johnson: Nah, he’s getting drafted
4:42 |
Brad Johnson: He’s like CL 26 and I kinda think Brasier is better if/when he’s fully up to speed
4:42 |
Mmm Mmm Good: Who ya got rest of career – Devers or Andujar?
4:42 |
gary mack: If you had to choose, Mize or Paddack, as best long-term pitching investment in Dynasty… who you got?
4:42 |
Brad Johnson: I would pick Paddack as I have no patience for rostering the development years of SPs
4:43 |
yojiveself: do you see Bud Black going with a platoon at 2B with mcmahon and hampson?
4:43 |
Brad Johnson: He himself has said he will
4:43 |
Matt: Duck Showalter for you fowl-loving O’s fans.
4:43 |
Rob: Any idea if Lindor’s injury is the sort that can affect him throughout the season? Like obliques and hand injuries can linger, sap power etc… Can I expect typical levels of production when he’s back?
4:43 |
Brad Johnson: Should be fine, but as we saw with Donaldson, no injury recovery is safe
4:43 |
Brad Johnson: Calves usually heal without issue
4:43 |
More Bour: I have protection once again! Can I hit 30 HR once again?
4:44 |
Brad Johnson: Can? Sure. Will? Probably not.
4:44 |
Brad Johnson: Remember there’s Pujols and Ohtani crowding the picture.
4:44 |
Matt: 3 years ago, my league shifted from W to QS. With openers and super pens, this seems to have been a bad change. Any thoughts on a different scoring category? (No SP/RP manipulation, so its a SP-only metric)
4:45 |
Brad Johnson: I prefer straight wins or a Ws+QS variant
4:45 |
bleepbloop: Keeper league with QS, which 3 do you keep: Heaney, Pivetta, Eduardo Rodriguez,
4:45 |
bleepbloop: Oops, here’s the full question: keep 3 (6×6 scoring with QS): Heaney, Pivetta, Eduardo Escobar, Hendricks , porcello
4:45 |
Brad Johnson: The Eduardo has changed…
4:45 |
Brad Johnson: I like Porcello for QS leagues. He’s one of the most consistent 6 IP guys among the non-elite
4:46 |
Brad Johnson: Hendricks is pretty solid in that regard too, even if that’s a boring pick
4:46 |
Brad Johnson: With the Red Sox bad pen ERod might be a better play than Pivetta who might go six innings eight times all year
4:47 |
Brad Johnson: Phillies have a stacked 8-man pen and Pivetta seems like a classic “get him out before the third time” guy
4:47 |
Brad Johnson: (I really think they should Open for Pivetta and VV)
4:47 |
Turgid: See you agree with me… do you want Goldy, Freeman, or Arenado? Which one is the $40 guy?
4:47 |
John: Hey Brad – I need to make a decision on my 2-year franchise. Bellinger, Rendon, or Bauer? Who’s the safest to perform of this bunch?
4:48 |
Brad Johnson: A hitter is safest. I like Rendon most personally. Bauer is highest rated for 2019 thouh
4:48 |
Brad Johnson: And given we’re only fussing about two years, it might make sense to only focus on 2019 and let 2020 happen
4:48 |
Anonymous: Turns out saying ‘lol oh no my velo is down in spring’ sarcastically has a bad track record. Betances, Fulmer… we’re coming for you next, Greinke.
4:48 |
Brad Johnson: Greinke’s velo has been down in ST since he turned 30
4:49 |
John: Brad, I am in a 4×4 11 team keeper lg. No R or K. It is half AL and half NLWe have 23 roster spots, no bench, unlimited DL. Budget is 26$ instead of 260$. I have Trea Turner at 4.70 this year with option to keep at 5.20 or 5.70 for 2 more or 3 more years. Worth it?
4:49 |
Brad Johnson: Losing runs is a huge category for him
4:50 |
Brad Johnson: I don’t have much sense for how inflation might run in this league. Turner is probably like $36 or so in redraft of that format
4:51 |
Brad Johnson: If you have to run the option now, I probably pass
4:51 |
Brad Johnson: If you can run at the end of the year, the $52 version might be a not-terrible waste of money. Again, kinda depends on inflation
4:52 |
Underpaid Trout: What side in a 14 team keep forever league do you prefer? Trout or Altuve Vlad Jr, & Buehler?
4:52 |
Brad Johnson: That’s a nice haul for Trout, a rare instance I’d seriously consider disaggregating him
4:52 |
Brad Johnson: That said, it’s not a strong preference. You can try to hold out for more if you want to pinch pennies
4:53 |
Brad Johnson: It’s perhaps worth trying with Trout.
4:53 |
Brad Johnson: Not like you’re death gripping Pablo Lopez
4:53 |
Desert Air: I expect do see Ketel Marte become a toolsy everywhere kind of player for Arizona – what say you?
4:53 |
Brad Johnson: Depends how Jones handles CF
4:53 |
Brad Johnson: If that fails, which it probably will, then Marte just plays CF
4:54 |
Need one arm: Need one out of Archer, Tanaka, Darvish, Keuchel….who should I go with?
4:54 |
Brad Johnson: Keuchel won’t be ready for OD so he’s out
4:54 |
Brad Johnson: The others are same asset class. I’d chase 20 wins with Tanaka
4:54 |
Jerry: Thoughts on Nathaniel Lowe in a dynasty? Seems to be flying under the radar after a Vlad-esque minor league season
4:54 |
Brad Johnson: Not sure I see a MLB role for him in a system with 45 2B
4:54 |
Brad Johnson: Many of whom are better than Lowe
4:55 |
Brad Johnson: So maybe he’s trade bait?
4:55 |
Brad Johnson: I’m going to try to get some looks at him in Durham this year
4:56 |
Closing time: I have lots of shares of Seranthony Dominguez in leagues. Over under on 20+ saves in 2019?
4:56 |
Brad Johnson: under, but not by much
4:56 |
Brad Johnson: I’ve got him penciled in for 12 to 15
4:56 |
Brad Johnson: And the ratios alone will be worth it
4:56 |
Andy: Trout for Scherzer in a swap of first round keepers (each one would get an additional year of keeper eligibility as a result of the trade). If I get Zack Wheeler (4th round keeper for 2 more years) back in addition to Scherzer, is this enough of a return for Trout?
4:57 |
Anonymous: 1700 IP cap, check my math. 7 SP + 7 RP?
4:57 |
Brad Johnson: Yea, that’s about right
4:57 |
Backend starter: Which do you prefer? Anibal Sanchez, Eflin, or Luke Weaver?
4:57 |
Brad Johnson: Like Eflin and Weaver too as dart throws
4:57 |
Matthew: Who is your personal favorite 2B target?
4:57 |
Brad Johnson: lel Jose Altuve
4:57 |
Brad Johnson: Cesar Hernandez if we’re talking down ballot
4:58 |
Old Guys Rule: Which old guy would you rather have in your team this year. Jones, Cutch, CarGo, Braun or Gardner?
4:58 |
Brad Johnson: One of these guys is still a fantasy monster…
4:58 |
NotBurtReynolds: What’s the likelihood that Spencer Howard turns into a must own prospect in dynasty leagues?
4:59 |
Brad Johnson: Why are people asking me about Spencer Howard today?
4:59 |
Brad Johnson: The bar for “must own” dynasty pitcher is pretty high
5:00 |
Brad Johnson: He could get there, but he’s also not close to can’t-miss
5:00 |
Smith > Vogelbach?: If you’re doing a reptile-based team name with Luzardo, you gotta go all the way and grab Mikolas too or you’re not doing it right
5:01 |
Brad Johnson: This one is over my head unfortunately, somebody explain it to me
5:01 |
Desperate, Confused Marlins Fan: Who has a bigger year? Matt Chapman or Rafael Devers.
5:01 |
Brad Johnson: Chapman is the better bet.
5:01 |
Chuck: Do you see bounce back years from Z. Godley or L. Weaver?
5:01 |
Brad Johnson: Potentially.
5:01 |
CC: Bad catcher time – in obp / slg who you like out of barnhart, hedges, barnes, suzuki, hicks, astudillo?
5:01 |
Brad Johnson: Barnhart if you want a bunch of PA
5:02 |
Brad Johnson: Willians is only for fun until a better option arises
5:02 |
Brad Johnson: Not a great format for him
5:02 |
Datdudejg: Just traded Miles Mikolas and joey wendle for MadBum and Jose Reyes…..how’d I do??? Thanks Brad for the chat!
5:02 |
Brad Johnson: Sadly, I think I like Mikolas more than Bumgarner.
5:03 |
Brad Johnson: And Wendle over Reyes is a given
5:03 |
Brad Johnson: So if the SP are even close like I think they are, then you took the L
5:03 |
A: apparently Mikolas ate a lizard???
5:03 |
Anonymous: Are Rockies hitters really THAT bad away from coors?
5:03 |
Brad Johnson: It does affect them pretty strongly
5:04 |
Brad Johnson: More importantly though, it doesn’t affect them once they’re no longer Rockies
5:04 |
Nate: Would you move Luis Severino for Gary Sanchez + Scott Kingery keep forever 20 team 5×5 dynasty?
5:04 |
LD: Thoughts on Bader for this year. 15-15 guy?
5:04 |
Brad Johnson: Possibly, in a pretty ugly way
5:05 |
Bob: You commented on the wrong Lowe, no? Nate plays 1b, Brandon 2b.
5:05 |
Brad Johnson: Wasn’t Nate moved off 2B because of the org logjam?
5:06 |
Brad Johnson: It’s possible I’ve confused his defensive history with someone else, but I was thinking about the right hitter at least
5:06 |
Brad Johnson: Seems to be time to wrap it up, comments have slowed to a crawl
5:06 |
Jerry: Love Cesar. Made some big changes to up his power before the foot injury last year
5:06 |
Acmcdowell: Will anyone in the Royals pen manage 10 saves? The team looks like a mess and the closer situation is even worse. Neither Boxberger nor Peralta look like they can actually throw strikes.
5:07 |
Brad Johnson: Box looks like he could be fine in a large park and bad division
5:07 |
Brad Johnson: His issues are command and home runs
5:07 |
Brad Johnson: But he posts enough K’s to be rosterable
5:07 |
Tim: 12-team auction, 7×7. $300. 4 OF spots plus UTIL. Keeping Bregman/Soto/Acuna/Benintendi for total of $88, giving me $212 for 21 remaining spots. What’s the maximum bid I could make for Trout without tanking the rest of my draft?
5:08 |
Brad Johnson: Close to $100? Lemme scratch out some maths
5:09 |
Brad Johnson: Yea, I think you could go to around $100 without negatively affecting your team
5:09 |
Brad Johnson: He’s a $70 player in the format without inflation
5:09 |
Brad Johnson: thereabouts
5:09 |
Brad Johnson: just make sure you pivot to pitching with the rest of your cash reserves
5:10 |
Brad Johnson: That offensive baseline should support a bunch of $1 bats.
5:10 |
JT: Dead cat bounce for Lucroy going from OAK to LAA?
5:10 |
Matthew: Mikolas is nicknamed the “Lizard King” because ate a lizard on a bet during an AFL game in 2011
5:10 |
Anonymous: With most honorable drafts over by tonight, but some recalcitrants blatantly ignoring two actual major league baseball games and drafting later, what questions will be answered by the 28th that we do not know today?
5:11 |
Brad Johnson: Does Daniel Vogelbach play at all
5:11 |
Brad Johnson: That’s about it
5:11 |
Mark: Lindor has hit in the .270s with lots of power the past 2 years. Are the days of .290-.300 gone?
5:11 |
Brad Johnson: Probably, he’s traded some contact for power
5:11 |
Brendan: What late round pitchers would you be targeting in a 6×6 QS league? My rotation is as thin as it gets with Rick Porcello as my only current healthy SP… yikes
5:11 |
Brad Johnson: Same list as earlier
5:12 |
Brad Johnson: In no particular order Anibal Sanchez, Trevor Cahill, Chris Paddack, Matt Strahm, Joe Musgrove, Brad Keller
5:12 |
Brad Johnson: If you need to go deeper, Trevor Richard, Caleb Smith, Pablo Lopez, slew of Giants guys, Jerad Eickhoff
5:12 |
NC: Some interesting buzz surrounding Marlins pitchers- who do you like most out of Trevor Richards, Caleb Smith and Pablo Lopez?
5:13 |
Brad Johnson: For now, I’ll go with Smith, but that’s entirely based on the past
5:13 |
Brad Johnson: I haven’t gotten a look at the new Lopez or Richards yet
5:13 |
Husker du: Hi Brad – what do you expect from Kangaroo this year now that he’s been named starting 3B?
5:13 |
Brad Johnson: A really bland 20 HR pace?
5:13 |
Dave in London: Expectations for Willie Calhoun this season?
5:13 |
Matthew: How much should I discount Lindor in a H2H league? Related: is this the sort of injury that lingers?
5:14 |
Brad Johnson: Roughly 50 cents
5:14 |
Brad Johnson: Not usually
5:14 |
DPD from EGV: Whats up Brad, please tell me I’m not crazy and that Willians Astudillo can get 450 AB’s this year and be a viable catcher.
5:14 |
Brad Johnson: I boldly predicted he would
5:14 |
Brad Johnson: but I make crazy bold predictions all the time
5:14 |
Brad Johnson: so you might be crazy
5:14 |
Vader: Looking for multiple position players….how do you rank Wendle, Goodrum, Marte and E Hernandez?
5:14 |
Brad Johnson: Marte, Wendle, Niko, Hernandez
5:15 |
Vader: Do you see Voit winning the 1st base job and does he get 600 ab??
5:15 |
Brad Johnson: I think it’s a 3-way time share and no
5:15 |
Brett: Hey Brad- I have Story already as my keeper in a limited keeper roto league. With only one Utilty spot available in our weekly lineups, would it wise to still take Lindor over a Snell/Bauer? His calf worries me about the SBs.
5:15 |
Brad Johnson: I think you still take Lindor, he’s just that much more valuable than pitchers
5:16 |
Casey: Bauer seems to be underrated in drafts so far. Where do you think he will be drafted going into next season?
5:16 |
Brad Johnson: I can’t say I agree.
5:16 |
Brad Johnson: Seems to be properly valued for a pitcher who missed time late with an arm injury
5:17 |
Brad Johnson: Alrighty, it’s been fun. See ya next week.
Uh, Brad, Bauer did not miss time with an arm injury. He missed time late last year because of a stress fracture after getting hit in the ankle on a comebacker.
I find Brad’s chats/articles/commentary to be entertaining, but frequent mistakes similar to this really make me question his overall (fantasy) judgement. It’d be one thing if it was misremembering an injury one of the Orioles’, Rangers’, or Royals’ bleh back-half starters, but Trevor Bauer has probably been the most talked about SP all offseason and is unanimously at least a top 100 draft pick.
