We’re about 20 games into the season and certain players are beginning to standout — some for good reasons, and some for bad. Today I also attempt to coin (you’ll get that joke at the end) a new nickname for a player.
In a random debate of sorts, fellow FanGraphs writer and baseball nerd colleague Mark Smith and the present author spoke on a number of things via twitter, culminating in the following question: which is better Backstreet Boys or N’Sync. What say you, reader?

The Coca-Cola Company released “new Coke” on this day 28 years ago. Having visited Atlanta earlier this year and also having a very good friend from Atalanta, Coke is more than just a pop to some. The author has been asked by said friend “Would you like a Coke? We have about five different kinds” which is received with a head tilt and quizzical look from the author. Apparently Coke can be an interchangeable term with all pop down there. And if you refer to pop as “soda” well then that is just awful.

Yesterday afternoon the author made a passing comment on twitter about not seeing the apparently beloved movie The Princess Bride. He was subsequently mocked and ridiculed in a handful of states spread across the continental United States. The author will be sure to rectify this situation…eventually.

Sports and sporting events are meant to be a distraction from the daily life. Even with teams that might not win it all, they still offer an escape in the form of entertainment. Sports should not be a cruel reminder of just how fragile of an existence we all share on this little floating rock in space. My heart goes out to all affected by the tragedy in Boston.
