Paul Sporer’s Baseball Chat – September 6th, 2023

Transcript is available now!

1:01

Paul Sporer: Hello everyone, thanks for coming out!

1:01

Seth: How would you rank Ty Rogers, Alzolay, and Estevez down the stretch in a S+H league

1:01

Paul Sporer: Alzo, Ty Rog, and Estevez

1:02

Emmet Sheehan: Picked him up in a 12 team NL only. Should I get excited now that he’s going to get some consistent run? Looked good against the Braves. Him or Pepiot ROS?

1:03

Paul Sporer: I got excited when I picked up Pepiot a couple wks but I also picked up Sheehan this weekend bc it looked like Pep was up in the air. Now both are penciled into the rotation. I lean Pep between the 2, but they’re both worthy, especially if you’re a wins chaser like me right now

1:03

ET Phone Home: Is Jasson Dominguez going to be a solid keeper after this season? His tools are out of this world (see what I did there?) but he’s only 20 and his hit tool isn’t as strong as his power/run. Will he hit for enough average to be a viable keeper?

Starting Pitcher Chart – September 6th

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Daily SP Chart archive

The chart includes their season performance, their opponent’s wOBA versus the pitcher’s handedness over the last 30 days, my general start/sit recommendation for 10-team, 12-team, and 15-team (or more) leagues, and then a note about them. Obviously, there are league sizes beyond those three so it’s essentially a shallow, medium, deep. If a pitcher only has an “x” in 15-team, it doesn’t mean there’s no potential use in 10s and 12s, but it’s basically a risky stream for those spots.

These are general recommendations, and your league situation will carry more weight whether you are protecting ratios or chasing counting numbers. This is for standard 5×5 roto leagues. The thresholds for H2H starts are generally lower, especially in points leagues so I thought there would be more value focusing on roto.

It’s a half-and-half slate on Wednesday. There are certainly some guys in the second half of the list that some of us can and will start, but there’s a lot of danger out there so tread carefully!

Back after a couple days missed. Friday wasn’t planned so my apologies while Monday the site was dark for Labor Day and I decided to take the day and just watch some baseball on the couch! Time for the stretch run now.

Hopefully your work isn’t already burned by Lucas Giolito! In fairness to him, it has to be tough to move teams twice in a month, especially moving across the country and then back again. I only started him because of the 2-step and I’m SOOO desperate for wins.

Today has a lot of startable guys a level beyond my recommendation (i.e. startable in 10s if I put 2xs, or 10s/12s if I put 1x) depending on your situation. Some of you need to open up your thresholds to have any chance of catching with time running out so you might be starting guys you normally wouldn’t have considered a month or three ago.

Paul Sporer’s Rest of Season Starting Pitcher Rankings

Jonathan Dyer-USA TODAY Sports

Here are my rest of season SP rankings. Let’s discuss in the comments if you have further questions about anyone. Obviously standings and situation will change how you manage these pitchers. If you’re chasing, open your window up a bit more… if you’re protecting, don’t hesitate to sit a Top 30 guy v. LAD or ATL (as a random example).

I will still have the Daily SP Chart running, too, so as things change with guys down the stretch, I’ll be able to adjust there.

Paul Sporer’s Baseball Chat – August 30th, 2023

Thanks for coming out!

1:05

Paul Sporer: Hello everyone, thanks for coming out!

1:05

Andrew: with shallow league h2h playoffs starting next week, what to do with trevor story? if steals arent needed, would you drop for noot or brandon drury?

1:08

Paul Sporer: Yeah would definitely prefer either of those 2 to Story, especially w/the SBs not mattering as much. I lean Noot with him returning Friday

1:08

I Used to be Mel Clark: Are you fine with cutting Will Smith in a 16 teamer at this point? Seems like the job is Chapman’s going forward. Similarly, any reason to keep holding Jose Alvarado? I have more than enough interesting SP arms to hold in their place ie. Verlander/Peralta/Glasnow/Ragans/Keller/Bibee/Rodon/Detmers/H. Brown/Kutter/Greene.

1:08

Paul Sporer: Yeah I have no issues cutting either tbh

1:08

Andrew: is kyle harrison a via steaming option in shallow leagues or is this fools gold and going to blow up in our faces?

More than half the slate is recommended across the board but there are still some streaming spot. Actually, there are some pretty tough decisions, though your situation may make them easier (if you’re chasing or protecting).
