Mining the Braves Outfield

Two years ago the Braves were hoping to have the best outfield in baseball, with legitimate 20-20 options at left, center, and right field. This year, things are certainly different and much less intriguing from a fantasy perspective. There still may be some value for deeper leagues, despite the lackluster options the Braves are rolling out into the outfield this season.

Handcuffing Addison Reed with Evan Marshall

After recording a 3.17 FIP and moving into the National League, all things were pointing up for Addison Reed following his trade to the Diamondbacks last winter. Unfortunately, not all worked as planned for Reed as he allowed 11 home runs, blew six saves, and recorded a 1-7 record with a 4.25 ERA.

Is Jason Heyward Being Properly Valued?

Currently, Yahoo! rates Jason Heyward as the 28th best fantasy outfielder. To me, that looks light, and as a huge Heyward fan I am doing my best in putting that out there without bias.

John Jaso, Designated Hitter With Catcher Eligibilty

Following his trade from the Athletics to the Rays, it has recently been announced that – at least for this season – John Jaso will be ditching his catcher’s gear aside from emergency situations. Jaso missed the end of last year due to a concussion and the team has decided that since they acquired him for his bat, they want his bat to remain in the lineup as much as possible and not risk any further health problems.

Properly Valuing Carlos Carrasco

To start off, Jeff Sullivan wrote an awesome piece on Carlos Carrasco on the main site. If I could make a request, it is that you read the above link prior to reading this piece on Carrasco’s fantasy value.

Stashing Chris Taylor in Dynasty Leagues

Last week, FanGraphs’ fearless leader Dave Cameron tweeted out Steamer’s projections for top shortstop WAR (per 600 plate appearances). The top five? Troy Tulowitzki, Andrelton Simmons, Brad Miller, Hanley Ramirez, and Chris Taylor.

Neil Walker in Long Term Leagues

Two second basemen hit 23 home runs this year. One was Minnesota’s Brian Dozier and the other was Pittsburgh’s Neil Walker. Walker does not have the speed Dozier possesses, but his power did make him a top-10 fantasy second baseman this year.

Streaming Charlie Morton and Cory Rasmus

Morton

Yes, Charlie Morton is 5-12 and just coming back from the disabled list due to a sports hernia, but I like him this week as he faces the Red Sox in a home matchup on Tuesday evening followed by a second start at home against the Brewers.

Do Not Leave A.J. Pollock on the Waiver Wire

A guy with a 151 wRC+ is owned in just 17% of Yahoo! leagues as the playoffs in head-to-head formats are taking place and while roto players are fighting for the top spot in their leagues. In my main league I was actually scouring the waiver wire last night and was able to pick Pollock up, and it’s a very competitive league with guys who are very keen on the wire.

Searching for Second Base Power: Valbuena and Odor

I have always been a bit fond of Luis Valbuena, mainly because I love guys with high walk rates and some pop. This year he is finally producing enough to be usable in fantasy, specifically recently as he has hit four home runs in his past 12 games and has hit 16 for the season. If you are struggling at second base or third base and need some power down the stretch, you could do worse than Valbuena.
