A Busy Ottoneu Offseason

Real baseball is over and ottoneu roster review season is in full swing. Brandon Warne and Chad Young have already revealed where their rosters stand in FanGraphs Staff  Two, and I touched upon the challenges facing me while gloating about my championship win. It’s going to be a difficult offseason.

My present roster includes $548 spread over 42 players. That excludes roughly $30 to $33 from arbitration allocations. Obviously, I dealt a lot of cost effective talent to upgrade my roster. Like Chad suggests, I do my best to acquire keepers when trading away cheap players. Here are the biggest names I acquired during the season. Prices reflect the time of trade.

April 9
Clayton Kershaw ($61)
Kenley Jansen ($15)
Brandon Moss ($9)
June 18
Anthony Rendon ($25)
June 27
Jeff Samardzija ($17)
July 29
Brock Holt ($1)
August 10
Zack Greinke ($31)

I parted with a variety of future building blocks including Robbie Ray ($1), Drew Smyly ($6), Evan Gattis ($6), Stephen Piscotty ($1), Christian Yelich ($6), J.P. Crawford ($2), Edwin Encarnacion ($26), and Dellin Betances ($3). However, Kershaw, Rendon, and Greinke should help me to recover a similar quantity of low-cost core components.

Only seven players on my roster look like cuts, and they’re all cheap filler like Chase Utley ($6), Jimmy Rollins ($5), or Ryan Madson ($3) (prices reflect current state). My most expensive cut, Greg Holland, would have been an easy trade asset at $13. I suppose I have two choices – I could cut keepable players or make a lot of trades. Obviously, we know which route I’ll take.

Let’s start with position players. I’ve listed everyone by position, but the table is sortable. You may prefer to sort by price. This does not include allocations.

Hitting

Position Players
Player Salary POS G PA Points
Paul Goldschmidt $38 1B 159 695 1269.9
Adam Lind $6 1B 149 572 758.2
A.J. Reed $3 1B 144 661 1229.8
Brock Holt $3 1B/2B/3B/OF/SS 129 509 547.9
Justin Turner  DTD $7 1B/3B 126 439 630.2
Jonathan Lucroy $16 1B/C 103 415 431.6
Brandon Moss $11 1B/OF 145 526 543.4
Jonathan Schoop $9 2B 86 321 404.1
Chase Utley $6 2B 107 423 350.5
Brandon Phillips $4 2B 148 623 688.4
Anthony Rendon $27 2B/3B 80 355 357.9
Matt Carpenter $23 2B/3B 154 665 967.7
Mike Trout $57 OF 159 682 1207.9
Yasiel Puig $24 OF 79 311 357.8
Matt Kemp  DTD $14 OF 154 648 761.2
George Springer $7 OF 102 451 621.3
Melky Cabrera $6 OF 158 683 694.5
Charles Blackmon $5 OF 157 682 894.9
Franklin Gutierrez $3 OF 59 189 332.9
Eugenio Suarez $5 SS 97 398 463.9
Jimmy Rollins $5 SS 144 563 473.9
Alex Rodriguez $7 Util 151 620 867.9

As you might expect, Goldschmidt is drawing the most attention in arbitration with $7. Trout has $5 too. It pains me but I’ll have to entertain offers on Gold Standard, Trout, Rendon, Puig, and Carpenter. Those five are the core of my offense, but they’re going to wind up costing just under $200. I probably need to drive that cost down to about $100.

Once we get beyond the pricey guys, I still have a couple under-the-radar stars – particularly Springer and “Charles” Blackmon. Lind and Rodriguez formed a fantastic platoon in the utility spot for me, but I should probably limit myself to just one of them next season. I love Holt’s versatility, and injuries ensure he’ll eventually find everyday work. Kemp and Cabrera both recovered in the second half. They probably possess more value to me than my opponents are willing to compensate.

I won’t be able to set concrete plans for my offense until I shop those five over $20 players. Once I know who stays and who goes, I can develop a robust strategy.

Pitching

Pitchers
Player Salary POS G IP Points
Clayton Kershaw $63 SP 33 232.2 1574.43
Zack Greinke $33 SP 32 222.2 1355.73
Corey Kluber $23 SP 32 222 1202.8
Jeff Samardzija $19 SP 32 214 777.1
Jon Lester $17 SP 32 205 1096.4
Collin McHugh $9 SP 32 203.2 891.23
Scott Kazmir $8 SP 31 183 793
Lance McCullers $6 SP 22 125.2 645.33
Justin Verlander $5 SP 20 133.1 653.97
Zack Godley $3 SP 9 36.2 154.73
Jerad Eickhoff $3 SP 8 51 270.9
Kenley Jansen $17 RP/SP 54 52.1 541.67
Francellis Montas $4 RP/SP 7 15 75.3
Alex Cobb  60DL $15 RP 0
Greg Holland  DTD $13 RP 0
Koji Uehara  60DL $8 RP 43 40.1 380.77
Zachary Britton $6 RP 64 65.2 609.43
Kevin Siegrist $4 RP 81 74.2 576.53
Ryan Madson $3 RP 68 63.1 447.97
Nathan Jones $3 RP 19 19 107.9

The pitching staff should be much more straightforward. It will still be affected by what I do with Trout and Goldschmidt in particular. If I trade both stars, then I can probably keep Kershaw, Grienke, and Kluber. If I can’t find a deal to my liking, then I’ll revert to the rotation I used to start the season.

Honestly, I should still earn plenty of points without $100 committed to Kershaw and Greinke. If I do opt to keep my top trio, then I’ll be forced to shop my second tier guys like Samardzija, Lester, McHugh, and Kazmir.

The bullpen is a bit of a mess. I can’t afford a luxury good like Jansen, Holland lost all value, and Uehara is worrisome. Britton is an easy core piece, and I’ll probably give Uehara another go. It will still be a challenge to earn my usual 9 points per inning from the bullpen.

Overall

The overall strategy is relatively simple. I’ll need to consolidate my expensive, deep roster into a few big ticket purchases. Perhaps Trout and a second piece turn into $11 A.J. Pollock. Maybe Greinke and Lucroy can net $15 Kyle Schwarber. I wonder if $21 Nolan Arenado can be had for Puig and Carpenter? We’ll find out in a few weeks.

My favorite part of this article was how you made overt trade offers in the last paragraph. Well played.
