MASH Report (1/31/12)
Recent injury data
• Several reports are out about the health of Cole Hamels. First, he denies he was shut down this off season for shoulder soreness. The same article goes on and confirms he experienced some soreness while pitching this past September. No signs (low Zone% or loss in velocity) point to a major injury. Keep early tabs on him, but there is no reason not to draft/bid on him
• Derek Jeter says he is on pace to be ready by opening day. I expect him to be playing opening day. If he is 100% healthy will have to be seen.
• In some older, but relevant news, CC Sabathia may see an innings limit according to Larry Rothchild.
Rothschild also talked about Yankees ace CC Sabathia, who recently had arthroscopic elbow surgery after experiencing some pain in the postseason. The Yankees say they are confident Sabathia will be fine for the start of the season, but Rothschild said they may want to limit his innings.
“Joe [Girardi] and I have talked about it even going back to last year.,” he said. “This year we talked about it even more. When he had a chance to pitch on extra rest we did that. In the past he would pitch every fifth day almost all the time.”
Sabathia has averaged 200 IP over the past 6 seasons, but owners may want to temper expectations in 2013.
• Carl Pavano is out for an undisclosed time. Just stay away from rostering him for now.
• Finally, Jared Mitchell of the White Sox seems healthy and ready to burst onto the scene according to Rick Hahn.
‘We can’t possibly consider moving this guy, because he’s ready to bust loose,'” said Hahn during Saturday’s SoxFest Town Hall meeting. “Guys who have been working with him since he arrived here on campus are starting to get that excitement in their voice.
“He has a ton of tools, and it was always a matter at first of how quickly that development would happen.
He missed the 2010 with a torn ACL. It is time to temper expectations and see if he can get his 41% K% projected by ZiPS in check.
