Trevor Plouffe and Luis Perez: Deep League Waiver Wire

Individual league trading deadline have either already passed or are quickly approaching. That means that the only way to try improving your team for the last month is dipping into the dangerous and murky free agent pool. Maybe these two players can help you.

Trevor Plouffe, MIN SS | 5% Owned

With Alexi Casilla on the DL, Plouffe has seen a jump in playing time. The 25-year old was once a pretty good prospect for the Twins, but never OPSed higher than .736 in the minors. However, he has shown pretty decent power for a shortstop and experienced a surge at Triple-A this year when he hit 15 homers in just 192 at-bats, leading to a .323 ISO. At his age, the power spike could very well be more than just a fluke. Obviously, he won’t come close to that ISO mark in the majors, but above average power would be quite welcome. Although his batting averages have been quite low throughout his career, he makes decent contact, but his BABIP marks have typically been below the league average. He has a little bit of speed, so could swipe a couple of bases, but you’re really just banking on some long balls from Plouffe.

Luis Perez, TOR SP | 3% Owned

After pitching as a starter throughout his minor league career, Perez opened the season with the Jays as a reliever, but has stepped into the rotation after the injury to Brad Mills. Though his minor league record is uninspiring, as he has battled control issues, and his strikeout rate has typically been subpar, there is one thing going for him. His ground ball inducing ability could allow him to find some success. In his 49.2 innings this year, his GB% sits at a fantastic 66.7%. Of course, that is a bit inflated, as he won’t continue to allow line drives at just a 12.2% clip. So some of those grounders are going to become liners. The rate though is no fluke as he has consistently posted marks above 50% in the minors. He will probably generate more real life value than fantasy value, but he is worth a flyer in deep leagues based on those ground ball skills.
