The Benintendi trade is about the farm…. I’m not thrilled with how pessimistic you guys can be about penny-pinching. Why aren’t you complaining about KC making this deal, asking for half Benintendi’s salary thrown in, instead of signing a big outfield guy?
Why would you ever excuse billionaires pinching pennies? Wonder why we’d roast BOS more than KC………. we’ve regularly said they’re all rich and all full of shit for crying poor. And I’m not sure what you mean re: KC signing a big OF guy… with what? 3.3 mil?
Why kick a dead horse? Everyone knows they’re rich… It is just unnecessary to complain about a very normal part of the game. If you are going to get mad at not spending, get mad at the luxury tax; the tool that is used to create some parity among the rich and cheaper teams is the reason why the Sox are pinching. Without that the Red Sox would definitely be spending and not trading out of value. It’s just smart business to hire someone from the most efficiently budgeted and deep franchises for a luxury girdled team.
As for the Royals bit: I meant the Royals penny-pinched for Benny. They could have signed an elite free agent OF like Springer or at least tried to pay his price.
They didn’t because it is expensive. The point is both sides were being ‘cheap’ if you focus on those motivations (Money is at the front of every trade…)which avoid the story of what each team receives. It is inconsistent to razz on a team when the other team is just the other side of the same coin.
There just isn’t a comp between roasting CHC & BOS for crying poor and not doing the same because KC didn’t sign George Springer. I just don’t see how you find those to be at all related. First off, Springer wouldn’t even sign there, but it’s also completely illogical.
It is not illogical for the Cubs to spend on a playoff roster that could definitely make noise in October with some additions, but instead they cry poor and start cutting costs.
It’s the pretending they *can’t* afford to spend the money that is particularly pathetic.
