Castillo’s situation is more complicated than just performance. Because he’s cleared waivers and in the minors, his salary doesn’t count against the luxury tax like it would if they would call him up or if they chipped in money in trading him. So he’s really stuck in limbo due to this CBA loophole in my mind – I don’t really see a reason why his salary shouldn’t count against the luxury tax.
