The Change: Eno’s Starting Pitcher Rankings
The easiest way to tell you who I like is to actually tell you how I like every pitcher, I guess. So, by popular demand, here are my starting pitcher rankings. With a few toys that could be useful to you.
When making these rankings, I started with z-score style rankings based off of Steamer projections. You can find those yourself by using the Pauction Nalculator, for example. That’s a good way to keep your feet grounded in reality, since Steamer projects to the middle.
But breakouts happen. And so I’ve added a couple stats that help me spot breakouts. Strikeout minus walk rate was the backbone of the first ERA estimators ever put together (kwERA), so they aren’t new. And they might be a little better for in-season prediction versus season-to-season. Either way, they are clearly important and can give us a good snapshot of talent, even in a small sample.
I also consulted Arsenal Score, which weights whiff rates and grounder rates on pitch types to find pitchers with either balanced arsenals or exceptional pitches. You’ll see that I used Arsenal Score less among more established pitchers, and more among the end-of-tier sleepers with smaller track records. At some point, your results on the field matter more than your actual individual pitches, after all.
Lastly, I added the NFBC average draft position data and made an NFBC ‘rank’ that you could pair with the RotoGraphs rankings and my own rankings to find pitchers that may be undervalued.
Hopefully this will help you in drafting season. Roles are keeping some of my better-liked sleepers down for now, so if something changes this spring in a few rotations, I’ll be sure to point them out.
Here’s a link to the downloadable google sheet, and below you’ll find it in visual form for your eyeballs.

With a phone full of pictures of pitchers' fingers, strange beers, and his two toddler sons, Eno Sarris can be found at the ballpark or a brewery most days. Read him here, writing about the A's or Giants at The Athletic, or about beer at October. Follow him on Twitter @enosarris if you can handle the sandwiches and inanity.
Bless you, Eno.
No love for Quintana? Just wondering the reasoning behind the lower ranking.
His arsenal makes me nervous as heck. He’ll drop below average velocity this year or next, his change isn’t good by results, shape, or velocity. If the fastball suffers at all, he’ll just be a guy with a decent curve and good command of a below-average fastball. Not sure if that’s enough to keep up what he’s been doing.
Can I ask for specific thoughts on Tyson Ross? You’ve got him buried compared to NFBC and his production last year. Is it injury risk? Regression? Others jumping him?
I would be interested to see this table with some type of $ prices for a mixed league (12 or 15 team, maybe NFBC-style rosters), simply to get a sense of relative value that ordinal ranking doesn’t provide. I know $ values vary wildly based on league size, roster constructions, etc.
Honestly, Ross could be higher. But his mechanics and slider usage make me super nervous about innings.
these guys are so bunched up – I have them in a different order, but for a 13-team mixed, I’m showing less than $4 difference from #20 to #40.
Thanks Eno!
Curious as to why you would have D Holland ranked below others such as Pomeranz, Chase Anderson, Garza, Peavy and W Peralta. He showed some promise when he finally did pitch at the tail end of 2014, and was someone who was pegged for a breakout…his injury was not arm/shoulder/elbow related. I forr one can make a case for him to enter the top 65-70. Thoughts please
Maybe I pushed him too low, but to me he’s a fastball/slider lefty (worse than righty, because of platoon splits) who relies on velocity (which goes down every year) and pitches in a bad park. At least Peralta in NL.
I’m curious about the low ranking for Iwakuma?
I’m taking the under on all innings projections. He was almost out of baseball in 2010, 2011 he was throwing mid-80s as he came back from a shoulder problem. Big injury history, was injured last year, and it was his shoulder, too.
Iwakuma missed the first few weeks of the season with a finger problem, but he didn’t miss any other starts due to injury last season. There were reports of a stiff neck in June, and he left early in his final start of the season with a “side injury”, but nothing that sounds like a big deal. So what’s this about a shoulder problem?
He was almost done in Japan. Throwing mid-eighties and missed huge parts of two seasons right before coming over. We only know it was his shoulder.
No love for Doctor Waino? A regression is certainly in order, but isn’t ranking him after Stroman, Cole and deGrom a bit aggressive?
I just see too much injury risk, and his stuff wasn’t as sharp. He scares me. The other three are young and sexcelent.
No love for Daniel Norris? I know ranking all the pitching prospects would be too much, but Daniel is probably as likely to get a spot as Trevor May or Alex Meyer.
Good point. I was actually in love with Norris for the fifth spot and Sanchez to close, but then Norris had offseason elbow surgery. Still, he should have been in there where you mention.

Glad to see Hellickson on the list. I’ve never loved him, but he has a great changeup and a good curveball. Maybe he could ditch the fastball for more sinkers to get more grounders. Maybe he could learn a cutter.
There is a starters kit there that I like.
I am shocked you are so high on Alex Wood considering you never mention him
Despite the successful returns of TJ pitchers, doesn’t seem a bit risky to take Harvey as the 12th SP?
Harvey was legitimately the best or second best pitcher in baseball in 2013, when last healthy. Even coming back from TJ, that deserves a high ranking.
He will also be about 18 months removed from TJS, I would expect him to be much closer to normal.
Kuechel is listed in the NL.
So let’s say I use your ranks as a key to my drafting strategy in a 10 team H2H each category league. Let’s also say that my league mates are drafting approximately in line with ADP. I have listed below a possible SP staff in this scenario (round, your ranking shown in parens). My offense and/or closers should be studs. What do you think of my chances to win it all with this staff?
Ryu (13, 19),
Carrasco (9, 21),
Stroman (14, 22),
Hughes (16, 29),
Richards (12, 35),
Bailey (19, 37),
Hutchingson (25, 42),
Shoemaker (18, 44)
I love that rotation.
Thanks! Any chance for an update in your pitcher rankings toward the end of ST?
You should kill it with that rotation. Be prepared for half of your rotation to collapse though and have to stream or fill in gaps. You have to figure out of Stroman, Carrasco, Richards, Hutch and Shoemaker, 2 are likely to be flops.
May you live to be 1,000 years old Eno… and may the Angels do me a huge solid and keep Heaney in the minors to start the season so I can keep him without drafting him.
Eno, this is spectacular, beautiful, all kinds of wonderful. Based on the rankings, you’re not nervous about Bailey’s health? Or would he have been higher if fully healthy?
I have a strong keeper staff: Zimmermann, Cole, Harvey, and Stroman, and I’m trying to decide on a 5th guy. I’m leaning Gausman, but should I go with Bailey, Cashner, Shoemaker or McHugh instead? I’d prefer upside which is why I’m looking at Gausman, but at the same time I have 4 potential aces leading the way already. The league is shallow enough that I’ll be able to add a lot of useful guys in the draft. Your advice?
Kinda think Shoemaker might be the guy here. The other three are fairly significant injury risks. Shoe kind of a high floor guy with his command and splitter.
Eno,
Can you make a coloumn for pitchers ceiling?
Who are your picks to make the Kluber, Richards, Arrieta, Carrasco type leap this season?
Also, floor column ranking.
Thank you for all your Insight. Fascinating.
Maybe a tiered list of ceiling/floor pitchers would work better.
Also, could you come sit next to me during my drafts? And bring some really good beer? Thanks!
If Folty shows improved control with upper 90’s fastball in ST and wins the 5th starter job, how much do you bump him up (if at all)?
These rankings confuse me even more with my keeper league. In an auction league, I could keep any or all players:
Matt Harvey at $6.00
Garrett Richards at $6.00
Marcus Stroman at $6.00
Alex Cobb at $13.00
Alex Wood at $13.00
I plan on keeping Harvey, Richards, and Stroman. Is it worth keeping both Cobb and Wood at market value? I see that projection wise they are very similar with little to no savings at their values right now.
Don’t overthink it, keep the cheap ones.
Hey Eno,
Do you think Odorizzi has the upside to make a jump in the rankings here? Potential to be a 200-K guy after last year’s 9.3 K/9?
Eno – are you concerned about Strasburg getting hurt this year?
Love your work and the pod Eno. Hoping for some advice:
13 team 6×6 (OPS and QS) Roto – 2 C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, IF, 4 OF, 3 U, 4 SP, 3 RP, 2 P, 6 Bench, 3 DL
I can keep up to 4 of these players for just this year while forfeiting the provided round’s pick:
Jose Abreu – 6
Jose Altuve – 7
Corey Kluber – 16
George Springer – 19
Corey Dickerson – 26
