Seeking Alternatives to Wins

Enjoys long walks at more appropriate places in his fantasy baseball league’s standings. Must love dogs. (I do like me some Diane Lane, one of the more underrated Hollywood beauties of her time, in my opinion.)

This is kind of like the personals section of your local Craigslist, minus the creep or latent possibility of disease, death or need for a restraining order. There’s also practically a 0% chance that this entry ends up as a prompt for a category on the hilarious Comedy Central program “@midnight.”

I’m tired of wins. Not just because the stat has quote-unquote screwed me out of a rotisserie league title, although I’m sure it has at one time or another. Not just because of all the good arguments for why it’s a terrible statistic for individual pitchers. Not just because I’m tired of hearing people complain about why it’s a terrible statistic for individual pitchers. I’m over that stuff, for the most part. I’m just tired. And kind of bored.

Kicking Rocks: The Naysayers

Whatever happened to the power of positive thinking? Obviously it’s a lost art form when you’re talking about a certain percentage of fantasy baseballers. If you recall a Kicking Rocks piece I did  during the spring called Draft Characters, you’ll remember the outline I provided of the different types of people you’ll likely face in the war room on Draft Day. The first “person” discussed was the Know-It-All — the guy loaded with information and always willing to endow you with his wisdom. Well, what I didn’t tell you is what happens to this person once the season begins. The best way to describe it is to equate him to a petulant child who just learned the word ‘no.’ No player you like, does he like. No trade that you make, would he make, and heaven forbid you play with him in a league where you vote on trades. The transformation takes place shortly after the start of the season and your league know-it-all sadly becomes The Naysayer. Read the rest of this entry »


Kicking Rocks: Catching Up

The fantasy baseball season waits for no one and your absence from the day to day operations of your team and league can often be unforgiving.  Driving out of town for the weekend to attend your niece’s christening?  Tough break on missing that rookie sensation’s sudden availability on the Yahoo waiver wire.  Your wife’s idiot baby cousin is getting married in some remote corner of Mexico where there’s no internet service?  Too bad you couldn’t get those potential trade emails as your competition swooped in and brokered the deals for himself.  Your dad died?  Well, sorry for your loss and sorry that a DL’d David Wright and Adam LaRoche are still sitting in your active lineup.  There are no time outs in this game, so if you miss even just a few days, you’re going to have to dedicate some serious time to catching up.
