Starting Pitcher Chart – September 12th

Neville E. Guard-USA TODAY Sports

Daily SP Chart archive

The chart includes their season performance, their opponent’s wOBA versus the pitcher’s handedness over the last 30 days, my general start/sit recommendation for 10-team, 12-team, and 15-team (or more) leagues, and then a note about them. Obviously, there are league sizes beyond those three so it’s essentially a shallow, medium, deep. If a pitcher only has an “x” in 15-team, it doesn’t mean there’s no potential use in 10s and 12s, but it’s basically a risky stream for those spots.

These are general recommendations, and your league situation will carry more weight whether you are protecting ratios or chasing counting numbers. This is for standard 5×5 roto leagues. The thresholds for H2H starts are generally lower, especially in points leagues so I thought there would be more value focusing on roto.

Starter Notes September 12, 2023
RK PITCHER GAME 10 12 15+ IP ERA WHIP K-BB wOBA RK L30/Season NOTE
1 Freddy Peralta MIL v MIA x x x 150 3.89 1.13 22% 15th/23rd
2 Justin Verlander HOU v OAK x x x 136 3.23 1.16 14% 17th/29th
3 Nick Pivetta BOS v NYY x x x 117 4.54 1.23 21% 30th/27th Went 85 pitches last time out and should be ready for a big start
4 Joe Ryan MIN v TBR x x x 141 4.21 1.12 24% 7th/4th
5 Max Fried ATL at PHI x x x 66 2.70 1.17 19% 3rd/8th If you’re in ratio protection mode, I can see sitting either Fried or Wheeler given these 2 offenses
6 Zack Wheeler PHI v ATL x x x 170 3.49 1.05 23% 3rd/1st
7 Brandon Williamson CIN at DET x x x 98 4.20 1.24 13% 27th/26th A strong August (3.67 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 24% K-BB in 34 IP) has built the confidence to start him down the stretch
8 Bryan Woo SEA v LAA x x x 70 4.50 1.19 16% 28th/9th Modest outing in CIN doesn’t dissuade me from starting him anywhere
9 Carlos Rodón NYY at BOS x x x 46 6.60 1.40 10% 11th/10th Rodón and Scherzer haven’t been unquestioned starts lately but I have a hard time getting away from either
10 Max Scherzer TEX at TOR x x x 147 3.91 1.13 21% 12th/12th
11 Hyun Jin Ryu 류현진 TOR v TEX x x x 34 2.65 1.06 14% 18th/3rd Tough matchup, but he’s been absolutely nails in 34 IP this yr
12 Cal Quantrill CLE at SFG x x x 79 5.70 1.46 5% 29th/20th Still quite good when healthy; B2B 6 IP gems off the IL so far
13 Zack Littell TBR at MIN x x x 71 4.29 1.21 16% 5th/7th 3 straight 4 ER bland outings dented the confidence before the 8 IP/1 ER gem v. SEA; streamable everywhere
14 Michael Wacha SDP at LAD x 111 2.99 1.17 14% 6th/2nd Tough spot and I can’t blame anyone for passing, especially w/just a 10% K-BB in his L3
15 John Means BAL v STL x #N/A #N/A #N/A #N/A 22nd/18th John Means Business and he avg’d 75 pitches/start in his 3 rehabs so he’s got the juice to go 5 if he’s pitching well
16 Lance Lynn LAD v SDP x 159 6.09 1.42 16% 16th/18th If I’m wins chasing, my Charlie Brown ass is gonna try to kick that football again
17 JP Sears OAK at HOU 151 4.51 1.23 15% 1st/2nd I’m a Sears stan, but still can’t quite pull the trigger here unless I’m just in full on Hail Mary mode
18 Joan Adon WSN at PIT 34 5.56 1.24 13% 23rd/21st There’s a tinge of Hail Mary appeal here given the matchup
19 Javier Assad CHC at COL 92 2.83 1.20 9% 22nd/19th He does have a 2.34 ERA and 1.09 WHIP over his last 42 IP… just a 10% K-BB, though, and it’s Coors so be careful!!
20 Patrick Sandoval LAA at SEA 131 4.31 1.48 8% 4th/15th Probably someone I’m going to take a lot of $1/late-round gambles on next yr
21 Edward Cabrera MIA at MIL 81 4.56 1.43 13% 25th/24th 4 IP of 1-hit ball v. LAD might catch your eye, but he’s just SO volatile
22 José Butto NYM v ARI 21 3.86 1.57 1% 11th/10th
23 Bailey Falter PIT v WSN 71 4.65 1.34 13% 29th/14th
