Starting Pitcher Chart – June 22nd

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Daily SP Chart archive

The chart includes their season performance, their opponent’s wOBA versus the pitcher’s handedness over the last 30 days, my general start/sit recommendation for 10-team, 12-team, and 15-team (or more) leagues, and then a note about them. Obviously, there are league sizes beyond those three so it’s essentially a shallow, medium, deep. If a pitcher only has an “x” in 15-team, it doesn’t mean there’s no potential use in 10s and 12s, but it’s basically a risky stream for those spots.

These are general recommendations, and your league situation will carry more weight whether you are protecting ratios or chasing counting numbers. This is for standard 5×5 roto leagues. The thresholds for H2H starts are generally lower, especially in points leagues so I thought there would be more value focusing on roto.

Thursday, June 22nd Starter Notes
RK PITCHER TM OPP 10 12 15+ IP ERA WHIP K-BB wOBA RK NOTE
1 Shane McClanahan TBR KCR x x x 89.1 2.12 1.10 18% 24th Appears to be on cruise control right now… has won 3 straight starts and 11 of his 12 decisions
2 Bryce Elder ATL at PHI x x x 83 2.60 1.14 14% 21st Has become a surprising must start across all formats this yr
3 Joe Ryan MIN BOS x x x 84.2 3.30 0.97 23% 13th Ugly 5-run 3rd sank his last start but still going 7 in that outing is what makes him a stud
4 Braxton Garrett MIA PIT x x x 69.2 3.88 1.22 22% 18th Sub-4.00 season ERA despite that 11 ER nightmare thanks to a 2.70 ERA in his 8 starts since then as well as 55 Ks in 43 IP
5 Aaron Nola PHI ATL x x x 94.2 4.66 1.10 18% 1st Quick, where does Nola rank this yr among SP? His ERA probably has most of y’all guessing outside the Top 50, but it’s #29 w/the great WHIP, solid Ks & Ws
6 Blake Snell SDP at SFG x x x 75 3.48 1.29 17% 2nd A blistering 0.36 ERA/0.76 WHIP in his L4 starts w/39 Ks in 25 IP is why it’s so hard to quit him, even at his worst
7 Mitch Keller PIT at MIA x x x 92 3.62 1.14 22% 7th Smoothed out his ratios a bit lately w/a modest 5-start run (4 of 5 have 4+ ER) fueled by a .338 BABIP (.276 in his first 10 outings)… I’m not really worried
8 Bryan Woo SEA at NYY x x x 12.1 7.30 1.30 34% 26th Will be working the 6 ER from his MLB debut off for a bit, don’t let that obscure his excellent 16 K/1 BB effort in the 2 starts since
9 Logan Allen CLE OAK x x x 54.2 3.95 1.46 14% 29th Gotta roll w/him here even after the back-to-back 5 ER duds; if he struggles here, we can consider making a move on him
10 JP Sears OAK at CLE x x 76.1 4.24 1.06 18% 7th 1 of 3 A’s SPs with some fantasy intrigue (Harris, Blackburn), especially if you aren’t desperate for Ws
11 Alex Wood SFG SDP x x 35 4.11 1.46 11% 4th Dropped 5 scoreless at LAD in his first start off the IL w/0 BB after an ugly 8 BB in 10 IP across 2 starts prior to the IL stint
12 Domingo Germán NYY SEA x x 69 4.30 1.09 15% 25th Figured HRs would be his undoing but only allowed 1 in 7 ER dud v. BOS
13 Tommy Henry ARI at WSN 56 4.66 1.39 6% 22nd Low K starter against a team that never Ks
14 Jake Irvin WSN ARI 36 5.25 1.61 3% 5th Not sure there’s a matchup that would put Irvin into fantasy consideration
15 Austin Cox KCR at TBR 7.2 0.00 0.39 16% 19th Has maxed at 34 pitches in his MLB sample, can’t imagine he goes too far here as the follower
16 Justin Garza BOS at MIN 11 4.09 1.09 11% 23rd 29 yr old RP will be the opener, but I couldn’t find word on who’s going to be the primary follower

Snell’s numbers, by catcher:

  • Nola, 5 G, 22.0 IP, 26 K, 17BB, 7.36 ERA, .996 OPS
  • Brett Sullivan, 5 G, 28.0 IP, 28 K, 14 BB, 3.21 ERA, .627 OPS
  • Sanchez 4 G, 25.0 IP, 39 K, 9 BB, 0.36 ERA, .388 OPS

His recent run coincides with Sanchez coming on board and it’s been a respectable schedule too with his last 4 being @MIA, CHC, @COL and TBR.
