Starting Pitcher Chart – August 28th

Daily SP Chart archive

The chart includes their season performance, their opponent’s wOBA versus the pitcher’s handedness over the last 30 days, my general start/sit recommendation for 10-team, 12-team, and 15-team (or more) leagues, and then a note about them. Obviously, there are league sizes beyond those three so it’s essentially a shallow, medium, deep. If a pitcher only has an “x” in 15-team, it doesn’t mean there’s no potential use in 10s and 12s, but it’s basically a risky stream for those spots.

These are general recommendations, and your league situation will carry more weight whether you are protecting ratios or chasing counting numbers. This is for standard 5×5 roto leagues. The thresholds for H2H starts are generally lower, especially in points leagues so I thought there would be more value focusing on roto.

Starter Notes August 28,2023
RK PITCHER GAME 10 12 15+ IP ERA WHIP K-BB wOBA RK L30/Season NOTE
Kevin Gausman TOR v WSN x x x 150.1 3.23 1.16 25% 22nd/24th
Kenta Maeda MIN v CLE x x x 74.2 4.22 1.17 22% 24th/21st Unfortunately couldn’t pull a W in B2B starts v. DET, but he’s an easy start this wk even w/at TEX this wknd
Bryan Woo SEA v OAK x x x 59 4.58 1.22 18% 14th/29th Solid return (4 IP/1 ER) but was limited to 65 pitches, should be able to get 5 IP here even if they only add 10-15 pitches to his count
Zac Gallen ARI at LAD x x x 168 3.11 1.06 22% 13th/3rd
Blake Snell SDP at STL x x x 142 2.73 1.27 18% 20th/16th
Bobby Miller LAD v ARI x x x 81.2 3.86 1.16 15% 23rd/9th This Miller-Abbott-Grayson rookie trio have likely been gamechangers in a lot of leagues
Andrew Abbott CIN at SFG x x x 85.1 3.16 1.17 18% 16th/25th Control volatility usually decides his outing: 3, 5, 0, 0, 4 BB/36, 25, 62, 52, 41 Game Scores over his L5
Grayson Rodriguez BAL v CHW x x x 87 5.38 1.43 15% 26th/30th
Jon Gray TEX at NYM x x x 131.2 3.76 1.23 12% 19th/15th
Lucas Giolito LAA at PHI x x 148 4.32 1.27 17% 2nd/8th Keep tabs on Chase Silseth news bc if he can’t go, Gio has a chance to get at OAK on the wknd
Wade Miley MIL at CHC x x 87.2 3.18 1.17 9% 21st/18th He just gets the job done… at CHC/v. PHI isn’t easy, but I’m riding w/him in a lot of spots
Chris Sale BOS v HOU x x 73 4.68 1.14 23% 1st/3rd 2nd straight v. HOU, but that enticing at KCR on the wknd makes him a viable weekly lineup start
Reese Olson DET v NYY x x 68 5.29 1.25 17% 28th/27th One of those chase streamers with 2 good matchups (at CHW this wknd), but very high risk
Jameson Taillon CHC v MIL x 115.2 5.60 1.35 14% 25th/25th
Cristian Javier HOU at BOS x 127.1 4.52 1.26 13% 7th/5th Didn’t kill ya and grabbed a W v. BOS, but didn’t inspire a ton of confidence for a rematch (no 2-start, either)
Taijuan Walker PHI v LAA x 136.2 4.02 1.29 10% 29th/11th
Josiah Gray WSN at TOR x 135.2 3.85 1.44 9% 27th/14th I can’t get that excited about 6 IP of 1-hit ball when it comes w/5 BB
Luis Severino NYY at DET x 74.1 7.26 1.75 9% 9th/28th Yeah it was 6+ IP of 1-hit ball, but 2 Ks (in fairness, WSN is tough to K) so the confidence hasn’t risen all that much (at HOU this wknd)
Zack Greinke KCR v PIT x 114.2 5.34 1.25 13% 10th/22nd It might be 3-5 decent IP, but there is still plenty of risk and probably no 2-start
Johan Oviedo PIT at KCR x 145.1 4.46 1.33 11% 5th/26th
Xzavion Curry CLE at MIN x 77 3.51 1.22 10% 8th/7th There’s some chase upside for a 2-step, but I’m probably focusing more on 2024 Curry if he can flash some more swing-and-miss
Michael Kopech CHW v BAL 120 4.95 1.49 8% 17th/17th Put up a Josiah Gray with 4 IP of 1-hit ball but 4 BB
Bryce Elder ATL at COL 143.1 3.39 1.20 9% 18th/16th Looking much better in his L2 allowing just 3 H in 12.3 IP v. the 2 NY tms, but at COL/at LAD is quite literally the worst 2-step you can dream up
Adrián Martínez OAK at SEA 34.2 5.71 1.44 12% 3rd/13th
Kyle Harrison SFG v CIN 3.1 5.40 1.80 25% 18th/17th I like him long-term, but I just don’t trust him w/that command (or lack severe thereof)
Austin Gomber COL v ATL 136.1 5.48 1.47 8% 5th/1st #NeverGomber
Tylor Megill NYM v TEX 91 5.54 1.73 7% 15th/2nd
Adam Wainwright STL v SDP 77.1 8.61 1.99 4% 21st/19th
