Shortstop ADP Market Report: 12/27/2025

As we hit the beginning of draft season, it is important to monitor where players are being drafted on a regular basis. Throughout draft season, I will be doing that work for you with regular updates on the Average Draft Position on NFBC up until Opening Day. You can read all the Market Reports here.

Top 100 Players Rising

None

Top 100 Players Falling

Mookie Betts (-18.72) – Betts had one of the worst seasons of his career, hitting .258/.326/.406 with 20 home runs and eight stolen bases. The question is whether this was a sign of things to come or something else. Betts was extremely ill at the beginning of the season, causing him to lose significant weight. While he ended up just missing the Tokyo Series, a drastic weight loss like that could have longer term repercussions on him throughout the season. In spite of that, he still played 150 games and he seemed to improve in the second half. A full offseason to properly prepare could be all he needs to be back to his old self, but there is risk that this decline and not an aberration.

Top 200 Players Rising

Ezequiel Tovar (+24.87) – Tovar is rising after being low in the ADP after a rough season where he missed over 60 games to injury. He was able to finish the year on the field which is good, but he still has underlying skill issues that are troubling. Had he been a qualified hitter, his O-Swing would have been the eighth worst and his swinging strike rate would have been the worst in Major League Baseball. He is a good defender and locked into playing time in Colorado, but Coors will only cover some of the issues.

Dansby Swanson (+15.62) – Swanson is another one that may have just been too low in the ADP after going 24/20 in Chicago. Swanson is a consistent accumulator, hitting 22 or more home runs in four of the last five seasons and stealing 18 or more bases in three of the last four. He doesn’t hit high up in the lineup, but the Cubs lineup is good enough to still allow him to accumulate well.

Top 200 Players Falling

Corey Seager (-17.05) – Seager is dropping after missing time to injury for three straight seasons. When he is on the field, he is an elite hitter, but it’s hard to project him for 550 plate appearances. There is talk he could be moved this offseason which would help his overall outlook, but health is the real skill Seager is missing.

Trevor Story (-14.16) – It’s surprising to see Story dropping in the ADP after the season he had. He hit 25 homers and stole 31 bases for the Red Sox. More importantly, he stayed on the field for the first time since coming to Boston. That may be the rationale for the drop. At 33, it’s hard to think he will be able to repeat the health we saw from him in 2025 after not playing in 100 games in any of the three seasons prior to that.

Jacob Wilson윌슨 (-14.93) – Wilson had a very up and down season. Prior to getting hurt Wilson seemed to be the front runner for AL Rookie of the Year. Then he missed a month before returning and being overshadowed by his teammate, Nick Kurtz. Wilson is a hitting machine, but he doesn’t have much power or speed to go with it which makes him a difficult piece to build around in drafts.

Top 300 Players Rising

Konnor Griffin (+62.97) – Griffin is the top prospect in baseball and is rising after a report that the Pirates may give him a shot to win the Opening Day shortstop job. However, while he has been fantastic in the minors, he is just 19-years-old and has yet to see AAA. The Pirates are notoriously cheap and while they are saying that they will give him a shot to win the job, they may not want to start his clock at his age especially with the chance that 2027 is a shortened season with the pending CBA issues MLB is facing with the Player’s Union.

José Caballero (+20.84) – See the article in this series on second basemen.

Ernie Clement (+20.41) – See the article in this series on second basemen.

Top 300 Players Falling

Colson Montgomery (-16.53) – It is a bit surprising to see Montgomery dropping in drafts. Yes, he is a flawed and young player, but he is also coming off of an impressive MLB debut where he hit 21 home runs in just 284 plate appearances. He still struggles with his hit tool, but there is enough power and approach for him to be a nice value this late, especially if he keeps dropping.

Kevin McGonigle (-16.53) – It is also surprising to see McGonigle is dropping in drafts. He had a successful three level rise in the minors and was great at the Arizona Fall League.  He likely starts the year in AAA, but he could be an early call up for the competing Tigers.

JJ Weatherholt (-26.52) – Unlike McGonigle and Griffin, Weatherholt has already seen AAA and was great in that 221 plate appearance sample. The big question for him is where will he play when he is up? Masyn Winn is the better defender so second base seems like the likely home for Weatherholt and that could delay his arrival as well as the Cardinals not wanting to start his clock in a rebuilding season. He is ready offensively, but we don’t know when that will show itself for fantasy.

Others of Note

Anthony Volpe (-21.48) – Volpe is dropping with the news that he will most likely miss the beginning of the season recovering from injury. In leagues where you have limited IL, he shouldn’t be drafted, but in formats where you can stash, I am not ready to give up on a 25-year-old former top prospect. There is power and speed in the profile and we don’t know how much the shoulder injury affected him last year.

Colt Emerson (+49.75) – Emerson is rising with the reports that the Mariners will give the top prospect a chance to win an Opening Day roster spot. Emerson is coming off of a great season, rising three levels and finishing in AAA. With Jorge Polanco not returning, there is a spot in the infield for Emerson, but if the price gets too high, it may become prohibitive for such a young, unproven talent.

Nasim Nuñez (+80.04) – Nuñez is rising with the likelihood that he will be given a chance to start for the Nationals at second base. Nuñez doesn’t have much power, but is a good defender with plenty of speed. The hit tool has been an issue for him in the minors, but he showed good contact skills in a small sample at the Majors in 2025. He is a deep league play, but someone to keep an eye on in all formats.

Nuñez should be the starting shortstop, with Abrams sliding over to 2B. 🤞🏼
