RotoGraphs Audio: The Sleeper and the Bust 1/22/2015

Episode 186

The latest episode of “The Sleeper and the Bust” is live!

In this episode, Eno Sarris and Nicholas Minnix talk about, among other players in the news, Max Scherzer, Yovani Gallardo, Dan Straily, Jimmy Nelson, Colby Rasmus, Nori Aoki, and the Evan GattisChris CarterJon Singleton troika.

Requested topics discussed: Keeper questions, comprised of Teheran/Harvey/Richards, Longoria/Arenado, a lengthy NL-only list, and, presumably, Fiers/Hahn; a debate on Dickerson/Marte/Springer; 2015 interest in Drew Smyly and Hank Conger; and a question about the Achilles’ heel of projections, as well as how we look for players we think will beat them.

As usual, don’t hesitate to tweet us or comment with fantasy questions so that we may answer them in our next episode.

You can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or via the feed.

Thanks to Ian Miller, aka Teen Archer, for the intro/outro music. Approximately 80 minutes of joyous analysis.

Nicholas Minnix oversaw baseball content for six years at KFFL, where he held the loose title of Managing Editor for seven and a half before he joined FanGraphs. He played in both Tout Wars and LABR from 2010 through 2014. Follow him on Twitter @NicholasMinnix.

Last year I was high on Dozier and thought he was unknown until ENO ruined it 🙂
This year I am thinking that Brock Holt (gotta love the name!) is unknown and at least in ottoneu usable everywhere but in the battery. I cant find any blemishes on this prince, and figured you guys could find some warts on my princely frog. Would you talk about him on the next podcast? thanks.

No power, mediocre speed, and no clear path to playing time. They have 5 OFs, and even if something happens to Pablo, there’s a good chance the playing time goes to Hanley, or possibly even Cecchini. The stars would have to align for him to get more than 400 PAs, although if he’s batting leadoff for those 400 (I assume it’ll be Betts) then he could have some nice value.

I was all over pitch type peripherals and arsenals before it was cool. I drafted my staff last year by looking for pitchers with multiple above average pitches by whiffs/swing and GB% It worked incredibly, which is why Eno spreading the glory of pitch type peripherals is great, yet a curse.
