News and Notes

Like a bizarro episode of “Oprah”, Tommy John reigns. Shohei Ohtani, you get a TJ! And you get a TJ, Riley Greene! And you too, Jasson Domínguez! Tommy Johns for all! Same surgery but three different recovery situations; Ohtani will be able to hit but not pitch, Dominguez is expected to be out 9-10 months, while Greene could be ready for Opening Day because the procedure was on his non-throwing elbow.

After a home run and two more stolen bases, Corbin Carroll is the first rookie in history with 25 HR and 50 SB. In any other year, this would be a fairly ridiculous fantasy contribution without peers but 2023 is our year of Ronald – and Acuña could go 40/70, currently with 39 HR and 67 SB…Not to mention 138 R, 100 RBI, and a .338 AVG. Sweet jeebus.

Kyle Harrison is being recalled to start today’s game against the Dodgers, with Alex Cobb being ruled out for the rest of the season. Harrison burst on the scene with 16 K in his first two starts but posted a 7.36 ERA (7.83 FIP) over his next three starts before being demoted. I’m not sure betting on a big bounceback against the Dodgers is a super-smart streaming decision.

Shane Bieber (elbow) is expected to be activated from the 60-day IL on Friday to face Baltimore. Bieber has a 3.77 ERA (4.11 FIP) in 19 starts this season but hasn’t pitched since July 9th, posting a 5.22 ERA (5.03 FIP) in his five starts prior to hitting the IL.

Bumps and Bruises

Julio Rodríguez is getting X-rays after taking a pitch off his left hand yesterday but it seems to be only a precautionary measure, as Rodríguez stayed in the game, even hitting a home run two innings later. But still consider him day-to-day until we get further word.

Ryan Mountcastle (shoulder) was officially placed on the IL yesterday, retroactive to September 17. While he’s technically eligible for return on September 27, this likely effectively ends his fantasy campaign.

Kenley Jansen (CV-IL) was expected to be activated on Wednesday but now might not return until next week. Until he does, expect Chris Martin to be Boston’s first choice at the backend.

Luis Arraez missed his second game in a row after spraining his left ankle during pregame warmups on Tuesday. Consider him day-to-day.

Willson Contreras was pulled in the sixth inning with left wrist discomfort. Consider him day-to-day.

Jake Burger left in the third inning of yesterday’s game with tightness in his left quad. Consider him day-to-day.

Carlos Correa is likely finished for the regular season after being placed on the IL with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, an injury he originally sustained in May. But this is more about getting Correa some rest headed into the playoffs, with the Twins already virtually assured of an AL Central crown (magic number of one).

Royce Lewis missed Wednesday’s game with a tight left hamstring and is scheduled for an MRI today. Consider him day-to-day. Like always.

Byron Buxton (knee) will resume his rehab assignment today, having been shut down on September 1 while rehabbing his way back from a balky hamstring.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was a late scratch on Wednesday with a sore right knee, with MRI results expected back today. Consider him day-to-day.

Starling Marte (hamstring) is wrapping up his rehab assignment and is expected to rejoin the Mets for their final homestand of the season. Yippy.

Streaming Pitchers

Streaming Pitcher for Today: David Peterson, NYM @PHI – This one still feels pretty risky given the opponent and ballpark but easily carries the most upside on the slate because of Peterson’s strikeout proclivities. Peterson has 18 K in his previous two starts and 30 K in his last four. Just don’t expect the Mets to back him up enough to get a Win, something Peterson hasn’t picked up since July.

High Risk for Today: Emmet Sheehan, LAD vs SFG – While I do like the matchup, the big risk lies with if you’re hunting for a Win, as Sheehan threw just three innings in his last appearance as a piggybacker for Clayton Kershaw and hasn’t reached 5 IP since July 29.

Streaming Pitcher for Tomorrow: Sawyer Gipson-Long, DET @OAK
