Roto Riteup: September 14, 2022

I don’t give fantasy football analysis anymore, but this seems solid:

On the Agenda:

  1. Closer Chaos
  2. Quick Hits
  3. Various News and Notes
  4. Streaming Pitchers

Closer Chaos

Josh Hader worked a scoreless ninth inning to register his 32 saves on the season. Hader struggled mightily when he was traded to San Diego, but he has turned it around over his last five appearances, allowing just one run in five innings and registering five three saves in the process. It was a matter of time until he got the job back and it appears the time is now.

Quick Hits

Nelson Cruz left Tuesday’s game with an eye issue. According to manager Davey Martinez, he was having blurry vision and this is a recurrence of a previous issue. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Jake Fraley left Tuesday’s game with a head injury after being hit with a pitch. He was held out of the second game of the double header as a precaution, but it sounds like there has not been any concussion symptoms as of yet. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Various News and Notes
Jordan Groshans went hitless in three plate appearances in his Major League debut.

Groshans has hit .263/.359/.331 in the minors in both the Blue Jays and Marlins minor league system this season, but has improved to .301/.398/.416 in 133 with two home runs and one stolen base since being traded to the Marlins. He is a former first round pick, but has struggled to show power in the minor in spite of good strikeout rates. While he may be a popular pick up this weekend because of his former prospect pedigree, he probably doesn’t offer much except some potential batting average help.

Joe Ryan threw seven scoreless innings versus the Royals on Thursday, allowing just two walks and no hits while striking out nine in the victory.

In spite of having a no hitter, the Twins pulled Ryan as he was already at 106 pitches and Bobby Witt Jr broke up the no-no in the ninth. Ryan has been up and down this season, but there is tremendous upside when he can keep the ball in the yard. He could end up being a bit undervalued heading into 2023, but there will be advocates for him everywhere.

Mark Mathias went 3-for-5 with two home runs in the victory over the Athletics on Tuesday.

Mathias is a 28-year-old journeyman with three career Major League home runs prior to this game. There hasn’t been a ton of power in the profiel until this year, but he did crush eight bombs in AAA in 202 plate appearance before being called up. He won’t play every day, but he is interesting in deep leagues or DFS when he is in the lineup.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today:  Roansy Contreras at CIN

Don’t love when guys are pitching at Great American Ballpark, but Roansy has been so good recently.

High Risk Options: David Peterson vs CHC, Zack Greinke at MIN, Drew Smyly vs CHC, Brayan Bello vs NYY, Dane Dunning vs OAK, Austin Voth at WAS.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: None

Short slate with bad options.

High Risk Options: Daniel Lynch at MIN, Madison Bumgarner vs SD, Dylan Bundy vs KC.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from the recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”
