Tyson Ross is questionable
Ross was scheduled to start tomorrow, but due to what the team is labeling “general soreness,” he won’t be taking the mound. The Padres — well out of the playoff race since May — have yet to decide if their All-Star will make another start this season, and are giving the right-hander a few more days to recover. Ross has thrown 195.2 innings this year, well above his previous high of 151.2 innings in 2012, and even higher than the 136.2 he tossed last year. the Padres have found themselves a legitimate top-of-the-rotation arm who has managed not to have a platoon split this year despite a nearly exclusive fastball/slider arsenal. Hopefully San Diego decides to keep Ross on the shelf to make sure he’s clean for next year, which will be his age-28 season.

Matt Shoemaker scratched for weekend
Shoemaker was finishing up a dominating performance against the Mariners on Monday when he came up lame with an oblique injury. The diagnosis is in, and while the Angels believe it to be a mild strain, Shoemaker is going to miss his previously scheduled start this weekend. For owners like myself who was banking on a two-start week in their fantasy finals or semis, this news is depressing; but for Shoemaker and the Angels, it’s good news, as he’ll likely be ready to go for the postseason. The right-hander has been incredible in the rotation this year, and he’ll be a prime target for owners going into 2015.

Derek Holland comes back strong
Holland will start today against the Oakland A’s, so I thought it was important to talk nice about him before he goes out and ruins my narrative. Coming back after a year on the DL, Holland has thrown 21 sparkling innings, striking out 17 batters while giving up just two earned. While his starts weren’t against juggernauts, it’s always nice to see a guy get out of the gate with seemingly no ill effects from a serious injury. Holland may be available as a cheap keeper in some leagues due to starting the season on the DL, so make sure to go out and get him in deeper leagues.

I had to look up Fagottist, which included the synonym Fagotblazer.
