Paul Konerko aims to return soon
Konerko’s fractured left hand has kept him out a little while, and it would keep him out even longer if this wasn’t his last big league season. Konerko aims to return this weekend to end his career on his own terms, and the White Sox are likely to give him some playing time, especially at home. Konerko is hitting a meager .220/.272/.344 in this his final season, but you never know if he might have one last gasp left in him. Konerko has been a steady figure at first for Chicago since 1999, putting up some great numbers in the mid-2000s, but having his best offensive season in 2010 at the age of 34. Konerko hit 39 homers with a .312 average in ‘10, good for a sweet 121 wRC.

Pedro Alvarez, David Wright done for year
Alvarez has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in his left foot, so he will be out for the rest of the season, and likely any postseason contests the Pirates may enter into. Alvarez’s power production slipped this year, and even though he was a league average hitter, the Pirates couldn’t justify sticking he and his glove in the lineup every day. Alvarez played some first base as of late, but with Ike Davis already in place, it’s unclear what Alvarez will be doing next year. It’s possible that Alvarez will be non-tendered by Pittsburgh this offseason, and it would certainly be fun to see him in a friendly AL park.

Wright is being shut down due to shoulder problems, an issue that’s supposedly haunted him since the middle of June. Wright had a down year in almost every facet of his game, but the good news is he shouldn’t need surgery this offseason, and he still managed to put together 2 WAR for the Mets. Wright will be 32 next season, and while a bounceback isn’t guaranteed, it’s something I’ll be betting on in drafts.
