Carlos Martinez to start tomorrow
In order to give Michael Wacha some extra rest, the St. Louis Cardinals are going with Martinez for tomorrow’s start against the Philadelphia Phillies. Though the club seems set on keeping Martinez in the bullpen for most of the season, skipper Mike Matheny alluded to this not being the last time Wacha’s turn in the rotation is given to someone else. Matheny didn’t specify if Martinez would be the guy in future spot starts, but given Martinez has already made one spot start prior to tomorrow, he seems to be the likely choice.

Corey Dickerson fills up the stat sheet
Yesterday Dickerson had one of those games that makes fantasy owners smile. En route to his 4-for-5 day, Dickerson blasted a home run, scored three times, drove in as many runs and stole a base. As our brilliant leader Eno Sarris pointed out yesterday, Dickerson and teammate Charlie Blackmon have been enjoying success this season. Yes, Coors Field will inflate BABIP but Dickerson’s .340 road BABIP isn’t a product of the the thin mountain air. He’s flashed more power than I thought he had and his steals are nice to see, but I’m still waiting for him to come back down to earth a bit. Dickerson — even when not scorching hot — can still be a useful player with a .280 batting average and double-digit home run ability for the rest of the season.

A demotion for Tony Cingrani
Issuing three walks in 1.2 innings Thursday night was the stamp that sealed Cingrani being shipped to Triple-A. Okay, so one outing isn’t what caused him to be optioned; Cingrani’s 4.97 BB/9 is the third worst in baseball and his 1.71 HR/9 rates as sixth worst (minimum 60 innings). Factor in the return of Mat Latos and Cingrani was the odd man out on the Cincinnati Reds pitching staff. Manager Bryan Price thinks and hopes it will be a short stint in the minors but I’m not sure if I share his optimism. In addition to the walks and dingers, Cingrani’s 7.7 SwSt% is the lowest of his career as is his 53.6% F-Strike%. The good news is he’ll be used as a starter in the minors and he should be back on his regular five day rotation in case the Reds need him. I’d hang on to him for now in 14-team leagues but in standard 12-team redraft leagues I’d being to consider throwing him back on the waiver wire, though I am keeping the faith for a little while longer.

Kris Bryant watch
If you thought I wasn’t terribly optimistic about seeing Mookie Betts in the majors before September, you really won’t like me for my thoughts on Bryant. To be fair, it isn’t my thoughts so much as Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein. Yesterday Epstein was quoted saying he “doesn’t plan to call him [Bryant] up this year.” Bryant was promoted to Triple-A just days ago after crushing Double-A pitchers to the tune of a .355/.458/.702 line with 22 dingers and eight steals — good for a 218 wRC+. His healthy 14.5% walk rate helped offset his 25.9% strikeout rate. Dynasty leagues should make a play for him now but everyone else should look for Bryant to make a splash in 2015.

The daily five
Starting pitcher: Adam Wainwright — $11,300
He may not come cheaply, but Waino gets to face off against the Philadelphia Phillies and their woes when facing a right-handed pitcher. Their 83 wRC+ against righties is third worst in baseball.

Starting pitcher: Jake Odorizzi — $7,700
Odorizzi is at home — in a pitcher friendly park — against the Houston Astros. Yes, Houston has picked it up over the recent weeks but I still like Odorizzi to get plenty of fly ball outs today.

Infielder: John Jaso — $3,800
The A’s and Jaso take on Rubby De La Rosa today and Jaso holds the platoon advantage. He’s crushed righties with a .282/.369/.474 line thus far.

Outfielder: Khris Davis — $4,500
Davis gets to hit against the southpaw Christian Friedrich, someone who hasn’t started an MLB game since 2012. And the game is in Coors Field.

Other hitter: Rickie Weeks — $3,400
Going with another right-handed Milwaukee hitter here.

Remaining budget: $19,300
