Roto Riteup — Presented by DraftKings: June 16, 2014

Hopefully enough of you Roto Riteup readers watched the San Antonio Spurs absolutely trounced the dumb Miami Heat for the third straight game. If not, I don’t approve of your life, and I think you should leave.

On today’s agenda:

On tap: Rubby De La Rosa and Carlos Martinez
Both of the fine gentleman listed above are starting today, which should make for some excellent Monday viewing. De La Rosa will face off against the Twins in Boston, and Martinez gets the lowly Mets in St. Louis.

RDLR has been pretty excellent in his three starts this year, striking out over 26% of the batters he’s faced while walking less than 5.5%, but his BABIP and HR/FB% have both betrayed him thus far. Despite those cowardly betrayals, the fireballing righty has an ERA under 4.00 over 18.1 IP. The 25-year-old’s fastball has averaged 93-94 MPH thus far — a far cry from the 96 in 2011, but still quite powerful. RDLR supplements his heater with the occasional slider and a solid changeup.

Martinez has been stuck in the bullpen for the Cardinals, and he hasn’t exactly been great trotting in during the late innings. Despite sitting 97 with a decent breaking ball and the occasional nasty changeup, Martinez has an ERA of 4.86 over the past two seasons, but his FIP is a much prettier 3.32. Martinez was a starter throughout the minors, and he has tremendous upside if he can stick in a major league rotation. Martinez is simply making a spot start for Adam Wainwright, but perhaps a strong outings will merit consideration for a larger role. I suspect Martinez will be on somewhat of a strict pitch count today, so don’t expect more than four or five innings of work from the youngster.

Erick Aybar hurts his hip
After homering in his first AB and securing The Buffness a 9-2 record, Aybar was removed later in the game with a sore hip. Aybar has been quite solid thus far, hitting .288 with five dingers and five steals, which is solid for a bottom-tier starter in standard leagues. Aybar should only miss a day or two, but that will make weekly owners think hard about using a bench option should they have one.

Nick Martinez impresses the author
I had the chance to watch Martinez face off against the Mariners yesterday, and while I must admit that I had consumed a couple libations, I came away impressed. Martinez gave up 10 hits, but what I liked to see what the way he got on top of his fastball and used his changeup as a counter balance. Martinez doesn’t get many grounders, which isn’t necessarily surprising given his arm angle, but I think that’s a problem that could be fixed. Martinez is still just 23 and learning the craft, and while he’ll never be an Ace, he could be a solid middle of the rotation starter if his approach changes.
