This was cool:
Bob Costas called "The Sandberg Game" 40 years ago today for NBC.
With the Cubs honoring Ryne Sandberg today with a statue (https://t.co/DjzsZJCsML), Costas is on hand at Wrigley Field and joined the ESPN crew for a half inning on Sunday Night Baseball. ⚾️🎙️ pic.twitter.com/5H44tkmBTA

Closer Chaos
David Bendar was placed on the IL with an oblique strain. Typically these types of injuries take 4-to-6 weeks to return from. Aroldis Chapman received the first save for the Pirates on Saturday, so it is likely he will be the closer until Bednar returns.
Edwin Diaz was ejected from Sunday’s game versus the Cubs before ever throwing a pitch due to having a sticky substance on his hands.

He will likely be suspended for 10 games due to MLB rules.
Quick Hits
Giancarlo Stanton was placed on the IL with a hamstring strain. There is no timetable for his return.
The Yankees traded for J.D. Davis and they sent Jordan Groshans in return to the Athletics. Davis was designated for assignment by the A’s so getting anything back for Oakland is a win for them. Davis will likely provide infield depth for the Yankees but could push DJ Lemahieu for playing time at third base.
Braxton Garrett was placed on the IL with a flexor strain. This is disappointing as it often leads to Tommy John surgery. He is droppable in most formats.
Orelvis Martinez was suspended 80 games for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs. He is droppable in redraft formats but should be stashed in dynasty and keeper leagues.
David Fry left Sunday’s game with elbow inflammation. The injury is not considered serious at this time. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Will Benson left Sunday’s game with an elbow injury.

There is no timetable for his return. Consider him day-to-day at this time.
Mark Leiter Jr. was placed on the IL with a forearm strain. This sounds ominous and likely will not end well. There is no timetable for his return.
Various News and Notes
Spencer Horwitz went 2-for-3 with two home runs and two walks in the loss to the Guardians on Sunday.
✔️ Fair
✔️ GoneSpencer Horwitz has a .955 OPS 👀 pic.twitter.com/PJN56arA0k
— Toronto Blue Jays (@BlueJays) June 23, 2024
Horwitz is hitting .366/.480/.561 with these two home runs in 50 plate appearances. He has been hitting first or second in the Blue Jays lineup since his arrival to the Majors and while he doesn’t have a ton of power in his bat, he does have enough to be useful especially if he continues to hit high up in the lineup.
Heston Kjerstad is expected to be recalled from the minor leagues on Monday.
Apparently former Razorback Heston Kjerstad was plunked on the first pitch of his at-bat three times today and then he was ejected by the home plate umpire after the third.
News also coming out today that Kjerstad will be going back to the majors. pic.twitter.com/9WrRDDyIey
— Mason Choate (@ChoateMason) June 24, 2024
Kjerstad struggled in his initial callup, but didn’t get a lot of playing time before being sent down. He has been great in AAA this season, hitting .300/.390/.601 with 16 home runs and two stolen bases so he is someone that could be valuable if the Orioles actually let him play.

Pitcher for Today: Griffin Canning vs OAK
Canning has been up and down this season, but the A’s are a great matchup.
High Risk Options: Cade Povich vs CLE, Michael Lorenzen at MIL, Casey Mize vs PHI, Carson Spiers vs PIT.
Pitcher for Tomorrow: None
Some decent high risk options, but none that I trust.
High Risk Options: Logan Allen at BAL, David Peterson vs NYY, Kyle Hendricks at SF, Mitch Spence at LAA.

Davis could also be a platoon partner for Ben Rice – 3 of their next 4 games and 5 of their next 9 are against lefties.
