I’m not kidding – I’ll never tire of ridiculous Shohei Ohtani-nish things:

Kyle Hendricks renaissaince, anyone? Hendricks allowed three runs (1 ER) over 6.1 IP in a win over the Pirates on Wednesday and now has a 2.60 ERA and three wins over six starts and 35 IP. He also has a 13% K% and a “fastball” that averages 88 mph. Hendricks will line up to make his next start on Thursday against the Phillies.
The only thing that has slowed down Nico Hoerner in 2023 was a short trip to the IL. After going 2-for-5 on Wednesday with a home run and triple, Hoerner is now slashing .284/.333/.399 for the season, with 5 HR, 42 R, 38 RBI, and 16 SB. For context, that sandwiches him on the Razzball player rater between Rafael Devers and Francisco Lindor.
Brendan Donovan has a modest little 10-game hitting streak happening, going 1-for-4 in the Cardinals loss to Washington. Donovan saw some struggles earlier in the year that was costing him playing time but he’s now been locked back, having started 15 straight games, and 25 of the past 26. During his current hit streak, Donovan is slashing .386/.438/.523 over 48 PA, with a 170 wRC+ and .420 wOBA.
Gio Urshela is likely to miss the rest of the season with a broken pelvis, according to Angels manager Phil Nevin. This will continue to test their depth, with Anthony Rendon and Zach Neto already on the IL. Luis Rengifo (.271 wOBA, 67 wRC+) has now started eight games in a row, slashing .154/.267/.192 over 30 PA.
Kenta Maeda is set to make his return from the IL on Friday against the Tigers. Prior to the triceps injury that shelved him, Maeda had a 9.00 ERA over four starts but that’s also heavily weighted by the 10 ER he gave up in the start he was injured in.
The Yankees announced that Carlos Rodón will make his next rehab start on Sunday, after allowing 1 ER over 3 IP in his first one last Tuesday. Assuming he’ll need 3-4 starts total, that puts him on track to rejoin the New York Rotation around the second week of July.
Bumps and Bruises
Jordan Walker (illness) missed Wednesday’s game but it’s not serious and he’s still expected to make the trip to London. Since being recalled on June 2, Walker is slashing .339/.418/.593 0ver 67 PA, with 4 HR and 3 SB. Huh – it’s almost like a young player’s progression is not always linear. How about that?
Mike Yastrzemski was removed in the fifth inning after tweaking his hamstring going from first to third. Consider him day-to-day for now but this is also the same hamstring that put him on the IL for most of May, so be prepared for another trip.
Bryan Reynolds (lower back) and Andrew McCutchen (elbow) both missed their second game in a row. Keep them day-to-day.
Will Brennan injured his throwing shoulder while making a diving catch last night against the Athletics, leaving the game in obvious pain. Consider him day-to-day but it’s a real shame given the relative heater he’s been on since locking down right field for Cleveland; Brennan is slashing .333/.362/.515 in June, with 2 HR, 2 SB, and a 141 wRC+.
Tim Anderson made a pinch-hit appearance on Tuesday but was still held out of the lineup on Wednesday with a sore shoulder. The pinch-hitting was nice but a fourth-straight missed game is not ideal – consider him day-to-day…still.
Victor Robles (back) is headed back to the IL after returning for just five games after missing around five weeks with the same issue. Alex Call was demoted when Robles was activated but will likely see a return when eligible, with Stone Garrett also an option for more at-bats.
Bo Bichette was held out of last night’s game with left thumb discomfort. Consider him day-to-day.

Streaming Pitcher for Today: Alex Wood, SFG vs SDP – It’s a short-slate Thursday and Wood is easily the best option out of the remainders (Tommy Henry, Jake Irvin, Jose Cuas, Justin Garza). Wood looked sharp against the Dodgers in his return from the IL last time out, pitching five shutout innings, striking out four, and allowing three hits. Around five innings remains his likely max but Wood is a solid option as long as you’re not hunting wins.
High Risk Pitcher for Today: Tommy Henry, ARI @ WSN – Henry is inexplicably making his third start vs WSN; he allowed 2 ER over 6 IP in the first one and 5 ER in 4.2 IP during the most recent one.
