Various news and notes

Is Max Scherzer human? The last time a pitcher to had back-to-back starts like him was 1884, when it was legal to shoot a baserunner heading to first if he offended your sensibilities.

Justin Nicolino made his MLB debut for the Marlins last night, lasting seven inning against the Reds without giving up a run. Nicolino is never likely to be very fantasy relevant due to his low strikeout rate, but a change in approach could result in a Dallas Keuchel like arc, which would be interesting.

Yesterday was not good for young catchers. Travis d’Arnaud, who just recently returned from an injury, was injured in a home plate collision, and Blake Swihart left the Red Sox game with a leg injury.

The Mariners have hired Edgar Martinez to be their hitting coach. The future HOFer (it’s going to happen, dammit) will look to impart some wisdom on the cold Seattle bats, but like most hitting coaches, odds are he won’t be of any real help.

The Royals plan to activate Danny Duffy for a start on Wednesday. Duffy has been on the DL since the end of May with a biceps injury.

FanGraphs’ (sort of) own August Fagerstrom has a fun fact about Jason Kipnis’ opposite field
production you should click over to.

Streaming Pitcher Options
If you enjoy streaming pitchers, tune into the Roto Riteup for recommendations each and every day.

A pitcher for today: Vincent Velasquez at SEA (J.A. Happ)
Velasquez will square off against a middle lineup (at best) in a pitcher’s park. If the defense holds up, so should he.

A pitcher for tomorrow: Brett Oberholtzer at LAA (Hector Santiago)
It’s a half day for MLB action, but if you’re looking for a cheapish man to roll with, let it be Obi-One-Brettnobi.

Is it finally OK to move Altuve from the #1 spot for 2B? He’s off pace for the 50 SB’s he posted last season, he’s not scoring runs at the pace that one would expect from a leadoff hitter, and while his .287/.328/.390 line works well in a standard 5×5 league, it definitely hurts him in OBP leagues or those with OPS.
