Quick Hits

Mookie Betts was placed on the IL with a rib fracture. There is no current timetable for his return. 

Manny Machado left Sunday’s game with an ankle sprain.

Machado had to be helped off of the field and was in a ton of pain. X-rays were negative, but it would not be surprising if he hit the IL. CJ Abrams left his game early in the minors to be called up on Monday.

Harold Castro left Sunday’s game with calf tightness. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Tyler O’Neill left Sunday’s game with hamstring tightness. The Cardinals stated after the game that the move was precautionary, so hopefully he avoided serious injury. Consider him day-to-day at this time.

 

Various News and Notes
O’Neil Cruz will be promoted from AAA to the Majors on Monday according to multiple reports.

Cruz is one of the top prospects in baseball with a tantalizing combination of power and speed. He hit nine home runs and stole 11 bases in AAA this season while slashing .223/.337/.424 in 54 games. The question remains about how much he will strikeout. He started the season swinging and missing a lot, but has corrected some of that and dropped his strikeout rate to 23%. He is a must pick up in all formats.

Jack Suwinski went 3-for-3 with three home runs in the victory over the Giants on Sunday.

Suwinski had the game of his life and now has 11 home runs and two stolen bases this season, but in spite of the monster game, he is still hitting just .230 on the season. It is great to see these types of games, but I don’t think a breakout is really coming until he improves the swing and miss in his game.

Jerar Encarnacion went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in the victory over the Mets.

Well, that is a nice start to a career! Encarnacion was crushing in the minor, hitting .313/.385/.518 with 13 home runs and four stolen bases, but he struck out at a 28% clip.

He will get a fair amount of run for the time being, but he will need to limit the strikeouts if he wants to stay in the Majors long term.

Andrew Heaney returned from the IL and threw five innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and a walk while striking out seven.

Heaney threw just two pitches, 74% fastballs and 26% sliders, which was effective in spite of the command being spotty at times. On the right side, he only walked one hitter which is great. I have been a long time Heaney fan, but I am a bit worried that regression will come hard and fast.

 

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today: Zach Davies at SD

Some risk here with how well San Diego has played recently, but Davies has pitched well and the Padres have been worse against righties than lefties. 

High Risk Options: Alex Faedo at BOS, David Peterson vs MIA, JT Brubaker vs CHC

 

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Redi Detmers vs KC

Good matchup and Detmers has been better as of late. 

High Risk Options: James Kaprielian vs SEA, Rich HIll vs DET, Erick Fedde at BAL.

I’m starting to believe Suwinski, seems like it is mostly that .258 babip suppressing the profile. Worth a bit of run given the opportunity he has.

I don’t know how good they’ll be, but it should be a fun time for a Pirate fan like yourself to get to watch this young talent playing together and maybe building something for the rest of the season.
