Closer Chaos

Justin Martinez left Monday’s outing with elbow tightness. Whenever you hear elbow issues, it scares you and Martinez just returned from the IL on May 23rd after missing three weeks with a shoulder injury and only had five outings in 17 days. If he returns to the IL, Shelby Miller is likely the next man up for saves in Arizona.

Quick Hits

Hunter Greene will get a second opinion on his back and groin injury. Greene originally went on the IL with what was supposed to be a minor groin injury but after getting imaging done, it was revealed that there was something going on in his back as well. Second opinions are never good news, so be prepared that this will be a much longer IL stint than first anticipated.

Wilyer Abreu was placed on the IL with an oblique strain. Typically these types of injuries take about 6-to-8 weeks to return from. Top prospect Roman Anthony was called up to take his spot on the roster. Anthony has been fantastic in AAA, hitting .288/.423/.491 with 10 home runs and three stolen bases. He will be a priority pickup in all formats.

Ryan Weathers was placed on the IL with a shoulder strain. This explains why Weathers velocity was down in his last start. He is going to miss considerable time since the Marlins placed him immediately on the 60-Day IL and can be dropped in most formats.

Various News and Notes

Ivan Herrera went 2-for-4 with a home run in the loss to the Blue Jays on Monday.

Herrera missed time with an injury, but he has been great when he is on the field, hitting .322/.397/.568 with seven home runs and a stolen base. He is making good in-zone contact, not chasing much,m and hitting for power. If he can stay on the field, he should be a C1 rest of the way.

Jo Adell went 2-for-4 with a home run in the victory over the A’s on Monday.

Adell has quietly made massive improvements this season. While he is hitting .226/.297/.469 with 12 home runs and two stolen bases, his xBA is .272 and he is making the best in-zone contact and has his best whiff rate of his career while not sacrificing his bat speed which in in the 99th percentile in the league. He still has room to grow with the approach, but he is moving in the right direction and still has a ton of raw talent at age 26.
