Roto Riteup: July 28, 2015

In case you were sleeping around 12:30 eastern last night/this morning, you have missed out on the big trade. The Blue Jays have swapped shortstop with the Rockies, sending Jose Reyes et al for Troy Tulowitzki.

On today’s agenda:
1. The trade
2. Streaming Pitching Options

The trade
Recent details have Tulo heading north of the border with Reyes taking his spot in Colorado. Of course, Tulo in that Blue Jays lineup is the stuff of dreams, though as friendly as the Rogers Centre is to hitters, it still isn’t Coors Field. With that out of the way, the improvement in Tulo’s surrounding cast should offset the Coors Field numbers as the Jays have outscored the Rockies by almost 100 runs (not to mention a higher wOBA and wRC+). The turf that Tulowitzki will now call home does raise concerns for me, especially given his spotty track record in the health department.

No way to know if the Rockies want to hang on to Reyes, which seems crazy, but, it’s the Rockies, so until he gets moved, I actually like Reyes up in the mountains. Real grass, a great hitter’s park and did I mention the lack of artificial turf? Also being shipped from the Jays side is right-hander Miguel Castro. Castro has a great fastball, however his control and secondary pitches need work. Kiley McDaniel addressed Castro in his preseason rankings, specifically wondering about his command, consistency and changeup.

In addition to Castro, the Rockies are  getting righty Jeff Hoffman, the Jays’ preseason No. 2 prospect as well. Hoffman is coming off of Tommy John surgery, though he has already tossed 67 2/3 innings between High-A and Double-A this year. Castro is more likely to appear in the senior circuit this season, though I would still prefer Hoffman over him in dynasty or keeper leagues.

LaTroy Hawkins is also headed to Toronto as part of the deal, so, that’s a thing. Hawkins isn’t likely to see many save chances in his new home — not with Roberto Osuna and company around — but he could maintain some value in holds leagues.

The final piece of the trade is a third right-hander going to Colorado, Jesus Tinoco. Currently in A-Ball as a 20-year-old, Tinoco was an international free agent signing out of Venezuela back in 2011. McDaniel said in his preseason write ups that Tinoco flashes two above average offerings in a changeup and slider. With no cash changing hands, this deal appears to be finalized.

Streaming Pitching Options
If you enjoy streaming pitchers, tune into the Roto Riteup for recommendations each and every day.

A pitcher for today: Wade Miley vs CHW (Jeff Samardzija)
The Southsiders are the worst team in baseball when facing a left-hander. Miley has been shaky most of the season, though I’m optimistic about his chances here. Feel free to stream Miley in 65 percent of CBS leagues and about 90 percent of ESPN or Yahoo! formats.

A pitcher for tomorrow: Patrick Corbin at SEA (Felix Hernandez)
M’s hitters have fared better against southpaws than the White Sox, though that isn’t saying much. Still, I like Corbin to get a few strikeouts — a win is unlikely because, well, Felix — and a quality start should be in order. Corbin is available to pick up in about half of CBS formats, 75 percent of ESPN leagues and 85 percent of Yahoo! settings.

And the sound I hear is the last few straggler fantasy owners pulling their non-ace pitchers out of the lineup vs Toronto.
