The scouting reports says 80-Grade soccer skills:

COVID Issues

Joey Bart was removed from the game on Tuesday due to illness in the seventh inning. Apparently in between innings, he was throwing up in the clubhouse. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Trades (and rumors)!

According to Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic, the Tigers are open to trading Tarik Skubal. Skubal is under team control until 2026 and not even arb eligible until 2024, so this is pretty surprising. He has been the Tigers best pitcher this season, so unless Detroit gets a huge return, I can’t imagine he is actually moved.

Quick Hits

Giancarlo Stanton was placed on the IL with an achilles issue. He is expected to miss about 2-4 weeks.

Garrett Cooper was placed on the IL with a wrist contusion. There is no timetable for his return.

MacKenzie Gore was placed on the IL with elbow inflammation. Gore left his appearance in yesterday’s game with the issue. There is no timetable for his return.

Francisco Mejia was placed on the IL with a shoulder injury. The Rays are already down Mike Zunino, so with this news, it would make sense that Tampa Bay would be involved in negotiations for a catcher at the trade deadline.

Various News and Notes

Jeimer Candelario went 2-for-5 with a home run in the loss to the Padres.

Candelario struggled a ton in the first half, but came out in the second half about as hot as can be. He is hitting .400 with four home runs and seven RBI in 20 at bats since the break. Half of his home runs this season have come this month. This may just be a heater, but the underlying skills are better during it which gives it enough credence to jump on board until he slows down.

Luis Garcia went 3-for-5 with a home run in the victory over the Dodgers.

Garcia had been in a massive slump coming into the game going 1-for-19 in his last five games played. The 22-year-old has put up decent numbers since being called up, hitting .287 with three home runs and a stolen base while only striking out 20.7% of the time. However, the underlying numbers aren’t great. He is walking at a 1% clip and swinging outside of the zone 48% of the time and has a 16% swinging strike rate. There is a ton of talent in the bat, but this approach needs to change or regression will be coming very quickly.

Keegan Thompson threw seven innings versus the Pirates, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and no walks while striking out seven.

This was a nice start, but it looks even better in part because it was against the lowly Pirates. That being said, his breaking pitches were great, getting a 30+% CSW on them. It would be nice to see him increase the usage of them because if he remains a 50+% fastball guy, he will likely run into trouble against better lineups. He continues to be a team streamer, but you can do much worse in most formats.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today:  None

Only four players qualify and none of them are enticing.

High Risk Options: Brad Keller vs LAA, Chris Archer at MIL.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Kutter Crawford vs CLE

Crawford has been pretty impressive at times and has a decent matchup here.

High Risk Options: Brady Singer at NYY, Yusei Kikuchi vs DET.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from the recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”

I’m at the point where I’d stream just about anybody against the A’s, Pirates, Tigers and Marlins (especially with the Fish now down Chisholm, Soler and Cooper). They are the bottom 4 in wOBA (the 1st 3 by a lot) and are all in the bottom 9 in K%. I obviously don’t mean literally anybody but the bar for what is streamable against them is really, really low these days.
