Roto Riteup: July 22, 2015

At 6 pm eastern tonight you can catch the USMNT back in action! They’ll be facing off against Jamaica with a ticket to the finals on the line.

On today’s agenda:
1. Aaron Nola does it all
2. I still like Jayson Werth
3. Streaming Pitching Options

Aaron Nola does it all
In his big league debut Nola tossed six innings of one run ball, with his biggest mistake coming in the form of a Nate Karns solo dong. Nola allowed five hits and a sole walk, striking out six. Add in his first big league hit and Nola flashed one of the most impressive rookie skillsets since Henry Rowengartner. Of Nola’s 88 pitches, 59 went for strikes — including 10 of the swinging variety. I was most surprised by the late life on his fastball. I knew his repertoire from reading various reports, but seeing it on MLB.tv and really being able to look at it in various counts was great. As expected, Nola’s change piece was a thing of beauty, and is something I think will generate a ton of whiffs. If you were hesitant to grab Nola before seeing at least one start, that fear should dissipate. Admittedly the Rays are vulnerable when against right-handed pitching, but the raw stuff from the 22-year-old is impressive. He’s still free to pick up in 35 percent of CBS leagues, 70 percent of ESPN formats and over 80 percent of Yahoo! settings.

I still like Jayson Werth
To come clean, I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for Werth. I can’t help it; 20-20 season make me swoon. Of course his last 20-20 campaign came in 2009, though he was one steal from accomplishing it in 2011. For now Werth is rehabbing in Triple-A Syracuse. He’s recorded three hits and a walk spread across eight plate appearances, so for you small sample size enthusiasts, there you are. I’m expecting the Nationals to activate Werth at some point this week, and I’ve grabbed him in a couple leagues. I am a bit worried about the 36-year-old’s power waning — particularly as he comes back from a broken wrist — however I love his on-base percentage skills. If you’re a fellow OBP leaguer, Werth’s .368 career rate is pretty awesome. Werth is available in about 60 percent of Yahoo! or CBS leagues as well as 80 percent of ESPN formats.

Streaming Pitching Options
If you enjoy streaming pitchers, tune into the Roto Riteup for recommendations each and every day.

A pitcher for today: Tony Cingrani vs CHC (Dallas Beeler)
So this is a risky start given the power on the Cubs, but they do strike out with the best of them. On top of that, Cingrani is being activated from the disabled list due to a shoulder issue, and I’m always terrified of pitchers with shoulder woes. Still, he has swing-and-miss stuff and is largely available. You can stream Cingrani in more than 80 percent of the three major sites.

A pitcher for tomorrow: Mike Fiers at ARI (TBA)
The D-backs have been fairly average against righties this season, and Fiers could rack up the strikeouts. On the other hand, he is a bit homer prone and could serve up a long ball or two. If you’re feeling frisky, he can be utilized in over 35 percent of CBS leagues, about 50 percent of Yahoo! settings and 75 percent of ESPN formats.
