Roto Riteup: August 29, 2023

The last month of the season is going to be fun:

On the Agenda:

  1. Quick Hits
  2. Various News and Notes
  3. Streaming Pitchers

Quick Hits

Matt Chapman was placed on the IL with a finger injury. There is no timetable for his return. The Blue Jays called up Ernie Clement to take his spot on the roster.

Yu Darvish was placed on the IL with elbow inflammation. This does not sound great. There is no timetable for his return.

Adrian Houser was placed on the IL with an elbow issue. There is no timetable for his return.

Matt McLain was placed on the IL with an oblique strain. Typically these injuries take 4-to-6 weeks to recover from. This would make him droppable in all formats. Stuart Fairchild was activated from the 7-Day IL to take McLain’s spot on the roster.

Various News and Notes

Johan Oviedo threw a complete game shutout versus the Royals on Monday, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five in the victory.

Oviedo was fantastic, throwing his slider 38% of the time and getting a 33% from it. Oviedo. Oviedo has been up and down this season, but over his last seven starts he has 43 innings and has only allowed 13 runs while striking out 33. He is someone to stream in nice matchups moving forward.

Kyle Harrison threw 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out 11 in the victory over the Reds.

This was unexpected. Harrison had only thrown a max of four innings in any start in his Major and minor league time, so to see him go this deep was pretty impressive. Even more impressive was his slurve, which got an astounding 55% CSW during the outing. Harrison tends to struggle with command and control, but this is the upside that has made him a highly touted prospect and the fact the Giants let him pitch this deep shows that they are pretty high on him as well. He should be picked up in all formats.

Jose Abreu went 2-for-4 with a home run in the victory over the Red Sox on Monday.

Abreu has been really bad this season, hitting .236/.294/.350 with 11 home runs. However, he has been pretty unlucky on balls in play and his pull heavy approach is great for his home park in Houston, so there is a chance he could get hot for the stretch run and salvage the rest of his season.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from my recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”

Bradley *and* Sanchez against LAA is extremely unlikely.
