Roto Riteup: August 29, 2017

We at the Roto Riteup are finishing the season with Kevin Pillar like effort:

On the Agenda:

1. You May Be Seated

2. Returning Phillies

3. Closer By Calamity

4. Various News and Notes

5. Streaming Pitcher Options

You May Be Seated

According to manager Joe Girardi, Aaron Judge is going to get a couple of days off to “try to refresh him.” Judge has struggled since the All-Star Break hitting .179/.341/.352 while sporting a 35.7% strikeout rate. Reports also have stated he has been receiving regular treatments on his shoulder and one has to wonder how much that is playing into his struggles as well.

Returning Phillies

According to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer, both Aaron Altherr and Odubel Herrera could return from the DL once rosters expand. Both will slide back into most fantasy lineups, but this is bigger news for Rhys Hoskins and Tommy Joseph. Joseph will likely take a bench role moving forward with the breakout of Hoskins. Joseph becomes droppable in virtually all formats outside of NL only. Hoskins on the other hand, is four games away from having eligibility in the outfield for next season and sixteen games away from having first base eligibility in formats that require 20 games played. If he can gain eligibility at both positions for next season it will increase his already inflated value heading into 2018.

Closer By Calamity

Blake Parker picked up his second straight save on Monday night coming into pitch a perfect inning in the ninth for the Angels. Parker has the full confidence of manager Mike Scioscia, as a guy that can pitch in high leverage situations for the Halos, but considering five different pitchers have recorded a save in the Angels bullpen over the last 30 days, it might be hard to believe that this is his job going forward. However, he is worth a pickup in many formats in case he does get the majority of save opportunities moving forward and because he provides great ratio and strikeout supplements down the stretch especially if you are running near your league’s games started limit.

Various News and Notes

The Mets announced on Monday that Yoenis Cespedes is done for the year. Cespedes has battled injuries much of the season, but still played well when he was healthy and on the field. He will likely be a popular bounceback candidate for 2018. #Mets

According to Nationals manager Dusty Baker, Trea Turner will be activated from the DL on Tuesday. Turner was proving doubters (like me) wrong when he broke his wrist in late June. He was slashing .279/.324/.422 with seven home runs and 35 stolen bases over the first 68 games. If he can show that he is fully recovered from the injury, Turner is likely to go in the first rounds of fantasy drafts and could make the argument that he deserves to be in the top half of the first round.

Miguel Cabrera was forced out of Monday’s game against Colorado with tightness in his lower back. Cabrera has dealt with nagging injuries all season which have contributed to the huge decline we have seen in production. While he is definitely past his prime, I am not personally ready to write off the future Hall of Famer like many have with Albert Pujols. With an off season approaching, it will be interesting to see how the Tigers approach the rest of the season with Miggy, but he definitely will be a bounceback candidate in 2018.

According to manager Bruce Bochy, Buster Posey’s MRI revealed he has inflammation and a bone bruise on his injured left thumb. Posey has had an under the radar kind of year having only managed twelve home runs and 54 RBIs, but slashing .311/.399/.461 as a catcher. While Bochy stated Posey should be OK, with the Giants season in the toilet, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him used much more sparingly rest of the way to protect their franchise player.

A pitcher for today: Jakob Junis vs TB

In his last four starts Junis has a 2-0 record and a 3.32 ERA.

A pitcher for tomorrow: Jerad Eickhoff vs ATL

Eickhoff has pitched well down the stretch and could be an interesting sleeper heading into next season.

I just did that exact thing. He also draws the Giants in SF on Sunday, so you can keep him for a two-fer of solid starts.
