News and Notes

Allan Winans will be recalled to start for Atlanta against the Mets today, completing his two-step against San Francisco on Sunday. In his last start on August 12 against the Mets, Winans went seven scoreless, allowing four hits and striking out nine. Winans has a 2.79 ERA over 113 IP at Triple-A this season, most recently striking out 10 over seven innings after he was sent down by the Braves.

It turns out Julio Rodríguez is totally normal – after going just 1-for-5 on Sunday, he now only has 18 hits in his last five games. Freaking poser.

The elder is out of action but Meadows the Younger is set to make his debut for Detroit this week. Parker Meadows will be called up by the Tigers today after slashing .256/.337/.474 over 517 PA at Triple-A, with 19 HR and 19 SB. Wait a tic…Did someone say power + speed?

Bumps and Bruises

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was pulled in the fourth inning yesterday with left middle finger discomfort but the Blue Jays were also already up 9-2 at that point so it may just have been a precautionary measure. Consider him day-to-day with Toronto getting an off day on Monday to get some extra heal-up.

Emerson Hancock was pulled after only two innings (31 pitches) on Sunday with a right shoulder strain. Bryan Woo was already set to return in what was supposed to be a six-man rotation for the next turn but things will get traditional with Hancock likely out.

Michael Harris II was scratched from Sunday’s lineup with a right foot contusion but should be back in action on Monday after his X-rays came back clean.

Thairo Estrada was hit on his right hand in the ninth inning of San Francisco’s win over Atlanta and while he finished out the game, will need to get X-rays to determine the extent of the damage, if any. Consider him day-to-day.

Sal Frelick missed another game on Sunday after coming down with a funky hamstring on Saturday. Consider him day-to-day, with the Brewers having an off day on Monday to help him get right.

Anthony Santander missed Saturday and Sunday with a sore back but another off day for the Orioles on Monday will give him a chance to get it managed before Baltimore’s series with Toronto on Tuesday

Comeback Trails

George Springer returned to Toronto’s lineup on Sunday and hit his 15th home run after missing the previous two games with a twisted ankle.

Brandon Marsh (knee) was activated on Sunday, going 1-for-4 with a run and RBI. After a hot April, Marsh slashed .208/.321/.278 in May before quietly getting back on track before his early-August injury. Since the start of June, Marsh is slashing .288/.357/.438 over 182 PA, with 3 HR, 19 R, 22 RBI, and 3 SB.

After another successful bullpen over the weekend, Nathan Eovaldi is scheduled to face live hitters later in the week. Unfortunately, manager Bruce Bochy remains a coy minx in regards to giving a firm timetable on when we could see Eovaldi again and whether or not he’ll need a rehab start or two before rejoining the big club. But given Texas’s position in the standing and the quality of their staff, I’m not banking on them moving quickly.

Streaming Pitchers

Sweet lord, do we finally have a short-slate Monday where I actually like more than one streamer?

You tell him, Mayor Kane. Hopefully betting on a streamer on a bad team won’t burn my ratios down like your big brother did your face.

Streaming Pitcher for Today: Paul Blackburn, OAK vs KCR – Since getting lit up by Boston for 6 ER coming out of the All-Star break, Blackburn has only allowed a total of 7 ER in five starts, most recently shutting out the Cardinals for seven innings while striking out eight. The Royals, on the other hand, are still the Royals. IE They only have 40 wins and have lost five of their last six.

High Risk for Today: Allan Winans, ATL vs NYM – In a classic Mets move, New York has kicked it into high gear with nothing else to play for, winning six of their last eight but I’ll still bet on them getting their cheap suit fold on against a team that has real championship aspirations and not just the ones they tried to purchase in the offseason.

Streaming Pitcher for Tomorrow: Zach Littell, TB vs COL
