The Roto Riteup has returned and will be here five days a week to give you all the relevant news, notes, and fantasy insight from the previous day’s action!

  2. Closer Chaos
  3. Quick Hits
  4. Various News and Notes

Trades!

The Blue Jays traded Reese McGuire to the White Sox for Zach Collins. This was a weird trade, but McGuire is the clear better defender and Collins has options remaining which would allow Toronto to send Collins down once rosters move from 28 to 26 early in the season.

Sean Manaea was traded to the Padres on Sunday for Erubiel Angeles and Adrian Martinez. The trade itself wasn’t surprising, but it was a bit surprising to see such a light return for the Athletics. Manaea likely bumps Chris Paddack out of the rotation (though he has been rumored to be available via trade himself) and likely means that MacKenzie Gore is likely to start in AAA.

Closer Chaos

The Marlins acquired Cole Susler and Tanner Scott from the Orioles in a trade on Sunday. This was a bit surprising, but makes sense as the Marlins are down Dylan Floro right now and definitely could use the additions in their bullpen. While Floro is out, closing duties could fall to Anthony Bender or Cole Susler. The Orioles could turn to Dillion Tate or Paul Fry.

Quick Hits

Lance Lynn will undergo surgery on his right knee to repair a tendon. He is expected to be out at least a month, but it seems more likely that he will miss closer to two months. Vince Velasquez is expected to replace him in the rotation, but don’t be surprised if the White Sox make a play at Frankie Montas as they have been tied to them during the off season.

Josh Rojas will start the season on the IL with an oblique injury. Manager Terry Lovullo stated that the injury will likely keep Rojas out for weeks. Typically these types of injuries take 4-6 weeks to recover from but also have a high risk of recurrence. He is probably droppable in most formats where you don’t have room to stash him on the IL.

Mike Clevinger will begin the year on the IL with knee soreness. This is concerning, but at least it is not an issue with his surgically repaired elbow. One has to wonder if the Manaea trade has something to do with this issue, but Clevinger should be stashed in all formats due to the upside while we wait on more news on his knee.

Various News and Notes

Matt Brash has officially made the Mariners rotation.

Brash is a very intriguing rookie that has looked great in spring. He has four pitches, but relies mostly on his fastball, slider and change. He has great stuff, but the question will be how his command and control are from start to start. He is worth a pickup in all formats on upside alone.

Justin Upton was designated for assignment on Sunday.

He will likely land a job as a short-side platoon somewhere after he clears waivers.
