With drafts beginning to ramp up, it is important to monitor where players are being drafted on a regular basis. Throughout draft season, I will be doing that work for you with regular updates on the Average Draft Position on NFBC up until Opening Day. You can find all the pieces in this series here.

Top 100 Players Rising

Emmanuel Clase (+23.59)- Clase is rising like a lot of the top tier closers right now. Clase is coming off of a fantastic season and is one of the few locked-in closers that shouldn’t have much competition as the Guardians bullpen is pretty thin at this point.

Top 200 Players Rising

Mark Melancon (+30.83)- Melancon is rising after signing a deal with the Diamondbacks. I have actually seen some different takes on the landing spot for Melancon as some are concerned with how bad the team will be. I look at it as a pretty nice opportunity for him to get 15+ saves with Arizona and then another 10-15 with a better team after the deadline.

Camilo Doval (+36.74)- Doval is rising after a dominant performance down the stretch and into the playoffs for the Giants. That being said, there is no real guarantee the Giants use him exclusively in the role or that he doesn’t regress or revert back into the pitcher he was earlier last season. I can’t pay this price.

Top 300 Players Rising

Corey Knebel (+334.8)- Knebel is the fastest rising player in this series thus far after signing a deal in Philly and with the team then saying they don’t intend to dip back into the closer pool. That being said, while Knebel seems to be the top choice for the job, I would be shocked if the Phillies aren’t players for Kimbrel or other better closing options on the market and with Knebel’s health history, I am more skeptical than most, especially at the increased price.

Lucas Sims (+99.54)- Sims is rising quite a bit for a guy who’s last save was in June of last season. This is indicative of the insanity of early drafts this season when it comes to relief pitching. I am sure he will play in the competition for saves in Spring, but there is no guarantee he comes out of it with the job. Way better options to gamble on.

Andrew Kittredge (+62.63)- Come on. Haven’t we learned this lesson before. Never trust closers from Tampa Bay. I like Kittredge a lot, but I have a chance of getting saves for the Rays as does anyone with a pulse.

Matt Barnes (+27.39)- It looks like Barnes may have a lead on the role in Boston, especially if the Red Sox are serious about making Garrett Whitlock a starter. I don’t tend to buy either of those, however. I would be surprised if the Red Sox aren’t in on a closer in free agency or via trade at some point and I think Whitlock ends up back in the bullpen if they can’t find a closer elsewhere or just because they have too many starting options.

Top 300 Players Falling

Jake McGee (-19.84)- This seems like a reaction to the Doval climb, but I would not be surprised if McGee ends up with the job or at least shares it considering how good he was when he was on the mound. I would definitely scoop him late in drafts on the upside alone.

Is there any sense of how the increased popularity (I think this is a thing) of SOLDS leagues are altering the draft landscape? The SF bullpen looks like a good investment for those types of leagues. Would Gallegos and Treinen (and similar) move up even higher. Or is that baked into the drafts already?
