Paul Sporer: Yeah when healthy, I think he’ll be good to go. He was REALLY good when healthy for a couple years.

Lars: Been offered Felix and J-Up for my Roberto Osuna and Ryan Braun in a 10-team re-draft. Accept or reject?

Paul Sporer: I’ll take that if you have some saves backup. I think J-Up = Braun at least and then Felix > Osuna (though Osuna is a dope af closer and I think he will hold the job all year)

Ryan: You guys are loving AAron after shutting down the (maybe meh) TB offense – are we doing the same for Finnegan after doing the same to the (certainly meh) Phillies offense?

Paul Sporer: With Sanchez there are big changes that we saw in Spring and were carried over into the TB start so I think there’s more reason for excitement. I’m unmoved by Finnegan’s opener. Still like him, but deep lgs only right now.

Ryan: Chris Tillman, Cody Anderson, Kyle Gibson, who ya like least?

Paul Sporer: Tillman rn bc I’m bought in on Anderson’s Spring changes and wanna see what comes of them, but that trio is pretty damn close

Mike: Time to add Sam Dyson, even if it means dropping a decent piece like Khris Davis or Piscotty?

Paul Sporer: Ooh, I’m not sure I’d go that far unless you’re DESPERATE for saves and it’s a 10-teamer

Paul Sporer: Both. He’s good for sure, but Philly sucks.

Joe: Are you buying DeSclafani if he shows that he’s healthy this weekend? Especially after his encouraging spring stats (increased k%).

Paul Sporer: Yeah Eno got me on board last year so I’m keeping a close eye. the oblique is annoying bc those can linger all year, but I’ll be watching his first start eagerly

Charles Boyer: Who are the first SP prospects that will come up this year and what date do you expect them by? Specifically, Berrios, Giolito, Snell, Alex Reyes

Paul Sporer: Honestly, no idea. The prospect guys barely have an idea so I’m ill-equipped to foster a useful guess. I like Berrios first of the group. Reyes is suspended bc of weed

Paul Sporer: Pretty in. Writing about tomorrow, so I haven’t fully analyzed the start yet

Paul Sporer: Never TRY to fleece someone. Bad for the league and bad for your relationship w/that trade partner. But see if you can improve your team by dealing him for sure

Gest : I assume you have your ear to the ground on this one: Will Shane Greene be used in the bullpen for the Tigers now or was that temporary?

And it’s been said that Greene hit 97 this spring? I didn’t know he had it like that. Is that to be expected from him if he’s in the bullpen?

Paul Sporer: It was bc he pitches Monday. Pretty standard stuff w/5th SP getting pen work early in the season. It was extra innings, too.

Johnny5Alive: so stephenson kind of as expected right now… some bouts with control issues, a couple of homers. Do you see him improving and providing value later this season?

Paul Sporer: he could, but it’ll probably take time. love the arm talent, though

Kvn: So I only watched Rodon in the first inning last night and he looked awfully shaky. Apparently he turned in a fine start and only ended up walking one (!). Did you watch? Did he rein it in or was it more that Oakland has a subpar offense?

Paul Sporer: I didn’t get to that game yet. If you were to only watch one inning of a start to get a feel on a guy, the 1st is the absolute worst. It’s the toughest inning without question. (BTW, not slamming you, just saying you gotta be careful w/1st innings)

Marc: Drop Mchugh/Lackey to stash Chapman?

Paul Sporer: Yeah, McHugh for now bc the stink of that outing will leave him on the wire for a while. how is Chapman not already on a team?!

Kvn: Who’s the best speculative AL SP eligible (8 starts last year) RP? Trevor May?

Paul Sporer: Yeah bc he’s a full time RP now and gonna be a beast

Paul Sporer: Very possible, even without this surge out of the gate. He was a first 1st-rounder this year and going as high as 5-6, so he won’t even have to climb that high!

Paul Sporer: I’m a huge fan. Was so bummed when he popped that hammy last year. Really seemed to get him and stay w/him over the 2H. Can’t imagine any other reason why he’d crater like that if it wasn’t injury

Paul Sporer: Yeah he pitched the 6th today so I don’t think Diaz is even 2nd to Hoover. And while Strickland is blocked, he is just better

Bob: 8 team league with 5 SP and 3 bench spots is verlander a stream or a hold? How about Kazmir?

Paul Sporer: Hold/Stream. I really see Verlander being a top-30 arm this year. Kaz can be top-40 or so in spurts, but healthy & durability are major concerns

Trevor Bauer: Why do the Indians hate me? Would you rather own me or my friend Zach Mcallister in an AL only?

Paul Sporer: LOL maybe bc you’re tough and not always malleable to coaching. But I get it bc you know your shit. Maybe trim a couple pitches and tighten up the command so you can be a star. In the meantime, dominate in the pen!

Linus: I have eight SP1/2’s in a 10-teamer that limits games started to 180. Is that too many or am I in good shape?

Paul Sporer: Can never have too much pitching, just like real life, bc pitchers fail. That’s just what they do. Whether it’s regression of stuff/skills or injury (which is obv the biggest factor), but you can be down to 5 in the blink of an eye w/pitchers.

Mike: Hamels + Giles for Tanaka + Casilla – which side do you want in a 10-team standard?

Paul Sporer: in a 10-team, I lean Tanaka/Casilla even though it’s riskier w/Tanaka’s health and Casilla’s grasp of role (though we could just be doing a Giles/Gregerson thing where we just ASSUME the team is looking to change just bc WE don’t really love Casilla as a closer) bc while I love Hamels, he’s not that much better than even a slightly lesser-than-peak Tanaka and Giles’ Ks aren’t SO much more than Casilla’s that they cancel the saves

Cory S.: When you get a surprise closer (like Osuna or Gregerson), do you find you get a better return when trading them to the owner who got screwed over (Storen or Giles owner)?

Paul Sporer: That’s really interesting. The narrative certainly fits and I can think of situations where I’d have been open to getting that surprise guy. But when you’re talking about trading, it’s just so specific to the person in your league.

MarinerDan: Can Carlos Martinez become a No. 1 fantasy starter as soon as this year?

Paul Sporer: Oh of course. Will he? Who knows obv but he’s got the stuff and ability to be a full-on stud. If he can improve his command a click or two, watch out!

Thom: Would you give up a current closer like Casilla for Giles with an eye on the rest of the season?

Paul Sporer: Nope, see above

Matt : Lawrie or Plouffe ROS in a OPS league. Im leaning plouffe. Thoughts?

Paul Sporer: I’m cool w/it. But really a coinflip.

MarinerDan: HanRam is going to be a beast this year, right?

Paul Sporer: Yes. Check that April! It was SO OBVIOUSLY health last year. And while we can’t guarantee health this year, we can certainly say he’s healthier than he was May-Sept. last yr. I was so surprised by his price in drafts. Loved getting him.

Josiah: Drop Brad Miller for Dyson? 12 team, no MI/CI slots, only have Ramos and Jeffress for saves

Paul Sporer: Ya I’m cool with that

Matt: What would you put the chances at that Semien outperforms Desmond this year?

Paul Sporer: 50%? Or maybe I should 49% bc I have Desmond ranked ahead but I can very easily see it. I think both will be sharp this year

Danimal : Would you drop Zeigler to pick up the presumed Rangers closer

Paul Sporer: How desperately do you need the saves? I don’t love Ziegs (espec. in any sort of K/9 or lg with innings cap), but possession is 9/10ths of the law

Stanton, Ortiz, C-Mart for Scherzer and Carlos Santana?

Paul Sporer: I know SPs are usually much higher in pts leagues, but I think the Ortiz/CMart combo is enough to offset

Robert: Klaw in his chat today said to take Nicasio with a grain of salt since he still didn’t show a third pitch last night. 5 of his 84 were changeups. Around how many should that number be before it’s considered ‘showing a third pitch’?

Paul Sporer: At least 9 for that count. You’re looking ~10%. I wish Nicasio had a third pitch, too, but I think the slider is enough. Pirates have drawn SP success out of 2 pitch guys before with A.J. Burnett being the upside for Nicasio in that case. I don’t think that’s out of the realm.

Anthony: Do you think the Astros will regret trading VV….I’d take him longterm over McCullers.

Paul Sporer: No. They know what they gave. They traded his upside for now talent. It’s part of how baseball works. Ostensibly he could do what Giles will do in the pen, but he deserves to be starting and throwing him in the pen for a year would stunt his growth so they moved him for a stud RP

Max: 10-teamer, have JoFer, Felix, Wainwright, Hamels, Tanaka, Ross, Wacha, and Odorizzi as my SP’s. Is this too much of a good thing, or should I stand pat?

Paul Sporer: Sit tight. I like it, but it’s hardly devoid of risk so if you get cocky, you could be hurting in short order

uruguayan: What is a Farquhar? Useful in holds leagues?

Paul Sporer: useful, sure, but probably better out there

Slevin: Eovaldi, Cashner or Samardzija ROS ?

Paul Sporer: Shark, Eovaldi, Cashner in that order

Pants: Would you trade for a very reasonably priced ($11 out of $260 cap) Pollock in a dynasty league? How much future risk does this injury/surgery have?

Paul Sporer: If you’re contending this year, cash that chip in. That way you might’ve lost HIM, but you didn’t lose the numbers. Don’t sweat ’17 when you’re trying to win ’16

Brian: IP/QS categories keeper league: trade Gio for Aaron Sanchez?

Paul Sporer: No. Sanchez will be limited in IP and could face some 5 IP starts as a result

Ricky: Thoughts on Rodon, and his start last night?

Paul Sporer: haven’t watched yet

Dan: Have C.Martinez, Smyly, Samardizja, Scott Kazmir and Volquez in a 10 team Roto. I tried to trade for a better Sp but no one is biting. Should I stand Pat or should I look for specific type of pitcters on the waver wire? Or do you have any other suggestins?

Paul Sporer: If no bites, then play the wire. You could stream the Volquez spot or look for these hot starters out of the gate like Sanchez & Nicasio and try to catch lightning.

idk: What’s the best strategy in a shallow 10-team league? I drafted 7th and I have some decent players but the free agent pool is full of great players, so I feel like I should be putting a premium on a couple positions, maybe?

Paul Sporer: yeah try to accumulate star power, otherwise you might just burn & churn a decent number of spots looking for a big score

Paul Sporer: it’s part of why I don’t play 10-teamers. I’m not trying to be a snob, but I don’t have the skill set (or time) for that league type. Patience isn’t as paid off in 10-teamers and you can’t get too precious about your players. And I get precious about everyone! lol

Mark: Is Gerardo Parra this year’s Pollock, or has the hype gone too far?

Paul Sporer: I wouldn’t go that far.

idk: Would you rather have Lucas Duda or Starlin Castro as your fourth outfielder?

Paul Sporer: Castro is an OF?

Paul Sporer: I wouldn’t, espec. for Kiermaier (who I like, but barf on that OBP), but he & Lamb are close

Paul Sporer: I like him. I think we get 16 HR, .270, 7 SB, solid SS

Paul Sporer: Well, who is the obvious and what kinda league we talkin? I’m in on two obvious ones: Sanchez & Nicasio

Victor: How well do you like Rodon this year? Is he still a year away from a true breakout?

Paul Sporer: Yeah probably ’17, but I made some bets on him just in case. He’s got the kind of upside where a command tweak could yield huge returns

Reginald Denton III: Would you drop A. Wood, Ventura, Gausman (when healthy), or T. Ross for Sanchez?

Paul Sporer: I could move Wood or Gausman for him right now.

Kenton: Why is it so damn hard to trade in fantasy leagues?

Paul Sporer: Time for many, but also a lot of people don’t wanna move guys so early. We spent all winter studying who to draft, why would I wanna move em before the first week is over?

Russell: Rotating D.Santana, Conforto, Buxton for my final two OF spots in a 10 team, doable or should I up my floor?

Paul Sporer: I can see any one of them sticking, so I’m cool with the rotation as you hope one pops bc they have the upside that can be game-changing in 10-team

Jake: My team is thirsty for saves, any way you’d add Trevor May right now?

Paul Sporer: Gotta be guys closer to the role still out there, right? I like him, but I could see Jepsen being second to Perk still

fish: What do you think Richards upside can be? Could he crack the top 10 SP? His stuff can be dominate, but seems to get rattled and over throw when things get tough.

Paul Sporer: he could crack top-10 in perfect world season, but I see that as a very low chance this year. I’d say more top-25. Remember, we’re a year and a knee injury removed from him being a total stud. I think the knee probably hampered him some last yr even though he went 32 turns. I agree that he can sometimes get rattled or overthrow when the goin gets tough, but he’s still learning

MarinerDan: Are you worried about a sophomore slump for Miguel Sano, particularly as he “learns” a new defensive position?

Paul Sporer: Oh yeah, i was easily lowest on him among colleagues here and in the fantasy industry at large

Paul Sporer: I respect the power, but those numbers he had last year have one comp: Jack Cust. Which is still pretty solid, tbh. Cust’s peak was short, but good

Hendu: I stupidly drafted Prince Fielder as my CI without realizing he was only eligible to be the most inappopriately-named DH in fantasy history. What are the chances he gets 10 games at 1B this year?

Paul Sporer: I can def see it. he got 15 last yr which qualified him at 1B/CI in some formats. Including Tout Wars which this newb did NOT know or I probably would’ve rostered him. That said, I got Carlos Santana cheaper and I love that even more (OBP lg, so both get a boost)

RP: What pitchers would you give up for Aaron Sanchez? Hamels, DeSclafani, deGrom, Syndergaard, Moore, Corbin, Rodon, Lamb, or Shelby? pick whatever.

Paul Sporer: Lamb easily. I liked Lamb coming in but then the back popped up and even when I really liked him, he wasn’t necessarily ahead of Sanchez

cmalcolm: How do you you see V Martinez and Saunders rebounding?

Paul Sporer: Well they remain major health risks obviously, but both have good upside w/a modicum of health. VMart’s is still much higher as Saunders hasn’t even sniffed the same heights, but Saunders has the power-speed mix while VMart is more just power-AVG

Cory S.: Mark Lowe (-4.6), Justin Wilson (-3.2), and Francisco Rodriguez (-2.1) are all down early in velocity. Is there a real Tiger’s bullpen curse? Ranked 29th in RP WAR over the last 10 seasons.

Paul Sporer: Don’t know that we can make much of it yet.

Paul Sporer: He can and he can. Houston will move guys where they deserve to be and not get married to a lineup so if he plays well, he’ll move. And I don’t think Luis Valbuena and Preston Tucker or even Evan Gattis are automatically blocking anyone so he and Reed can co-exist

Paul Sporer: No, I don’t. They have enough SP options. If Colome does well, he can box him out. Look what Boxy did to McGee last year. But he’s gotta be really good. If he’s just OK, I think Boxy gets it back

Paul Sporer: Yeah, assuming that Jose is Jose Fernandez. Fernanez/Archer are #1s, Hamels/Salazar are #2s and then you’re massage it from there. Tillman seems cuttable and should probably be the stream spot

OnSight: So I’ve been looking at the shift data just added and I see Jose Bautista had a 20 wRC+ against the shift last year (good for second worst) in 121 PAs, a number which should rise. How concerned about this should I be?

Paul Sporer: Haven’t dove in yet, but we’ve seen the shift eat some AVGs alive. Teix and McCann jump to mind. I think we already aware that Bautista is a AVG risk, but this strengthens the argument
