Jay: Any good tips or research methods you use to get comfortable with stolen base projections for a player? In addition to looking at their history of SBs, I’ve been looking at BsR and Sprint Speed (as well as age) to sort of reassure myself on certain guys being able to attempt steals this year or if I should be leery if they will. Paul Sporer: I think I’d go Pham there. His BB% has always been strong so you should still have a nice OBP even if he regresses more than expected

Pablo: How do you value Domingo Santana given the Brewers OF logjam. Not likely to move to a better park if dealt, right?

Paul Sporer: Hard to find a markedly better park, but I think his power plays anywhere so I’m not too worried about him

Bern: You think I can get away Ketel Marte as my starting shortstop this year?

Paul Sporer: NL-only or suuuuuuper deep mixer (20 teams?)

Questions?: 12 team League is switching from Wins to QS this year and I have a cheap Jon Gray $8.  Is the right plan to throw him back?

Paul Sporer: I’m not sure why the category shift would make you more inclined to throw him back. $8 isn’t must-keep either way, IMO

TheIlluminatty: Paul have currently 2nd pick. Mostly likely going Altuve. you think it’s a most to go Ace for a 2 or 3rd pick or i can live with going all offense for first 3 picks?

Paul Sporer: You can certainly live with 3 bats if you prefer that when it gets back. Honestly with Altuve you can go either way quite comfortably

Don: Better season in 2018: Mike Clevinger or Luke Weaver?

Paul Sporer: I’ll go Weaver. As of right now, Clev doesn’t have a guaranteed rotation spot (Tomlin penciled into 5th spot on Roster Resource). That said, I could see CLE making a deal. Actually see them as a nice fit with MIL for Domingo Santana for an arm

Bly: I have a keeper league auction draft next week that is in year 3. I only have 4 spots to fill and have a lot of cap to spend. However, there aren’t a ton of marquee players available (Braun, Lester, andrus, top closers are atop the list). Do I just overpay for the top guys because I have the money? Should I be looking to trade for keepers with high price tags right now? Or do I walk out of the auction with 4 guys with more upside but also burn $60? I’m just not sure how to move forward.

Paul Sporer: I’d prefer to acquire higher cost keepers you like than overpay for guys, but there will always be inflation in keeper leagues so if trades don’t work out, you can boost the prices a bit if you’re comfortable with it

Wes : Do you think Adam Eaton could rebound after the injury last year? Or are you concerned that the knee injury could linger?

Paul Sporer: It could linger, but I think he will rebound. I expect a solid season out of him

Mac: Writing an essay on babe Ruth’s impact on American society, would you happen to know any books covering the subject off the top of your head? Thanks!

John Doe: How do you value Charlie Blackmon in a contract year for dynasty league purposes? His road numbers are VERY mediocre, so if he signs elsewhere, could he fall out of the top 50 overall next year?

Paul Sporer: You don’t just take the road numbers of a Coors player and double them to figure out who they might be outside of Colorado. There’s a Coors hangover that impacts their road work. Regardless of where he lands, he’ll be 32 and seemingly running less & less so I’d be looking to move on anyway

Derek: On paper, who won the Marlins/Brewers trade?

Paul Sporer: There isn’t always a winner and loser. I get my sites and shows try to frame it that way, but it’s flawed. And with this particular trade, both teams did well. I just don’t see a loser

Pablo: Just took the plunge and got the PS4 so that I can play MLB the show… I remember they used to have a “rivalry mode” back in the day. Here’s hoping they bring that back.

Hack Wilson: H2H Categories, drop one of the following (rd-years): Machado-9-1, Nola-8-3, Rendon-5-3, Berrios-28-3

Paul Sporer: Probably Nola and I love Nola, but he seems closest to his ADP. Actually Rendon is probably closer, but I’d rather bet on the hitter between those two. As much as I love Nola, he’s yet to put up a 30-start season

Oddball Herrera: Is Hoskins special enough to overcome the fact that there are a LOT of home runs to be found late round at his eligible position(s)?

Paul Sporer: The later HRs are usually flawed, though. Projections have him at mid-30s with ~100 RBI, ~90 R, and a .260 AVG. And projections are often conservative. I understand waiting in the 1B pool, but I’m fine with Hoskins’ upper tier price

Paul Sporer: No problem, thanks for coming! I’m still a little nervous about his shoulder so I’d like to see him in ST, but in a 20 tm’r I’m OK gambling, espec. OBP

Kooter: Does Nomar Mazara start crushing this year?

Paul Sporer: I think so. I’m very excited about his ’18

Dave: Keep 5 league. Have Trea at SS; would you use a last keeper on Bogaerts (who would have to play UT) or Wil Myers, assuming equal cost?

Paul Sporer: Hmmmmmmmmm. I kinda dig Bogy, but I gotta go Myers. His SB success has me thinking he’ll continue to run

Sim: How do you feel about Ozuna this year? His BABIP was inflated so do you think he can eclipse .300 again?

Paul Sporer: I don’t think it was over the top given how hard he hits the ball, but he probably won’t hit .338 on groundballs again so I’d have him around .280-.290

Quadrangular: do you like this move for Yelich? seems like this could contribute to some HRs regardless of his low flyball%

Paul Sporer: It’s impossible not to like it. Just moving lineups in a similar park would be huge let alone the fact that he’s moving to best left-handed power park out there. I stupidly said he was right-handed on the pod yesterday, but he of course isn’t so this move is even better

GB: How many more good years (~3 WAR or better) does Verlander have in him?

Paul Sporer: 2

Guest: If you had Kershaw & deGrom in a k/bb, h/ip & era pitching league.. would you muck it up with Sean Newcomb?

Paul Sporer: I mean, ya gotta muck it up with somebody in those later rounds and they certainly give you cushion to gamble on someone like him. While Newk walks too many, he does at least get Ks, too.

Dennis: How valuable is Andrew Miller in a 20 team head to head mixed league that has Saves Plus 0.5 Holds as a category in addition to W+QS, ERA, WHIP, and K? I have him for the next two years and I’m thinking he has some extra value because he might sign as a closer this coming off-season.

Paul Sporer: He’s pretty valuable w/that Hold inclusion plus as you mention perhaps moving into a closer’s role next year. The thing is, he’s so good that he’s valuable in all leagues

Devil’s Advocate: There’s an awful lot of Bogaerts hate for a 25 yr old with a high BA floor in a good lineup, no? What if Alex Cora helps his power return to form?

Paul Sporer: Fulllllyyyy agree. Wanted to pick him in that Bogy/Myers question, but think Myers is better at UT.

Dilly Dilly: How highly would you rank Luis Castillo of the Reds and no more pitchers guide from you?

Paul Sporer: I’ve got him early-30s. And no SPG this year, but I did write up the pitchers for the Fantasy Black Book!

Paul Sporer: It’s possible. Gregerson never really seems to get full on confidence of teams so maybe Lyons get a look.

GB: Is Cole Hamels done? Traded for him in an 18 team mixed dynasty in 2nd half of 2015.  K% last year was garbage but velo seemed fine enough.

Paul Sporer: Ya I’m reluctant to completely write him off. 2017 is the clear outlier right now, but he’s also turning 34. I won’t project a full bounce back to low-to-mid 20s%, but I think he’ll at least add a couple ticks back to ~19%

Paul Sporer: If normal is 50%, he’s gotta be like 69% which in this case isn’t nice. Love the raw stuff, but definitely worry about health, especially after a heavy October workload

John M.: What do you think about MLB The Show adding the WBC? It would be awesome in RTTS and Franchise mode.

Paul Sporer: Based on what? Maz has two essentially league avg seasons at ages 21 and 22. He’s just getting started. Polanco’s issues have been health-related with that shoulder.

Bobopedia: Nola injury concerns are overplayed. One elbow injury and one back injury in his career, not sure why he gets talked about as a ticking time bomb

Paul Sporer: Not really. They’re played appropriately. It’s not like he’s going way late bc of them. He’s a top 70 pick.

Alan Trammell: Is a 60/40% or even 70/30% pitcher/hitter budget split crazy in this environment? The teams in my league are going with big offenses and maybe an ace and a top reliever. I want to build a big staff and roll the dice on offense…am I crazy?

Paul Sporer: It’s not crazy. Zigging can work when everyone is zagging or vice versa… however that phrase goes, but there’s so much volatility in pitching bc of these HR totals that it could go sideways quickly. I like trying new things, though!

Danny: Berrios (no round) or McCullers (10th round)?

Paul Sporer: Berrios for sure

DJ: Does the promise of a humidor at Chase take out the fear of tying fantasy championship hopes to Greinke and Godley?  Castillo, Weaver, Godley–which ones to keep of 2?

Paul Sporer: Is it promised? It seems to be rumored and speculated upon regularly, but I haven’t seen confirmation that it’ll be there. That said, I’m fine taking those pitchers even if it isn’t installed. Castillo and Godley for me.

Nathan: Most improved team this offseason so far? And who do you think will be most improved by the end?

Paul Sporer: LAA and probably still LAA

Toddrey Jeff: Do you think Scott Van Slyke has a decent chance of making the Marlins roster from Spring Training?

Paul Sporer: Sure… didn’t even know what there, but just about anyone with a pulse could make their roster

Paul Sporer: I’d favor him, yes, but Ramos is a solid backup plan

Paul Sporer: Frazier. I like Rodon but he just can’t stay healthy

Oddball Herrera: Mazara – career 51 wRC+ against lefties.  That number can imrpve, sure, but on a team that will apparently have more players than ABs to go around, you don’t want a guy who’s obviously platoonable

Paul Sporer: Why not? The number of 600+ PA seasons is dwindling so it’s not like you can’t roster platoon-potential guys in mixed leagues. Fair concern that he hasn’t hit lefties, but I’m not writing off a 23-year old with the talent he’s shown thus far

Paul Sporer: Yes, I think both are keepable at those costs in an NL-only. I really like both bats. Think I’d lean Peralta if forced to choose
