Ottoneu Power Rankings: Final 2017

The 2017 ottoneu season has come and gone, so it’s time to take a look at the final power rankings of the season. Was overall scoring down compared to 2016? Where did your team/league end up in the rankings? Let’s find out!

The first ranking I’m going to present shows the top individual teams in all FanGraphs points leagues based on their actual points scored. Also, please note that any teams/leagues from leagues with less than twelve teams are excluded from these rankings.

Offensive scoring continues to outpace 2016 levels (driven in large part by the HR boom), as FGPts teams average 5.35 Pts/G (up from 5.25 Pts/G in 2016), but just 4.75 Pts/IP (down from 4.94 Pts/IP in 2016). In addition, three teams in 2016 scored 21,000+ points, and another just missed with 20,953, but in 2017 no team scored more than 20,620. The average FGPts team score of 16,246 in ’17 was very similar to last years average of 16,265, and the average champion in ’17 scored 19,060 points compared to the ’16 average of 19,227 points. So all told offense was up, pitching was down, the top end team scores were lower, but the overall averages were almost identical to last year.

Congratulations to Gimme All Yasmani for their first overall finish, who flip flopped with last month’s #1 team Winnetka Bears over the final month of the season.

Congratulations also to Betts y Rhys on an impressive back to back appearance in the top three (#3 in ’17, #2 in ’16), and Lucky Strikes on their repeat top ten finish (#5 in ’17, #8 in ’16).

Note- there are 1,596 FGpts teams across 133 leagues.

Congratulations to Brinksmanship as they defend their ’16 #1 league ranking again in 2017.

Up next, the SABR league power rankings. I’m only going to show the top five teams/leagues as there are much fewer SABR leagues than FanGraphs points leagues.

Congratulations to Fake Girlfriends on their #1 ranking, making back to back appearances in the top five (#5 in ’16).

And the top five SABR leagues, using the same method I did for the FanGraphs points leagues.

Note- There are 204 teams and 17 leagues in the SABR points format.

Jackalope Inv. leapfrogs last month’s #1 league to take home the SABR league title.

Up next are the two rotisserie ottoneu formats, starting with the traditional 5×5 leagues. To calculate the top teams, I treated the entire population of teams as one big league, and gave every team points for every category based on where they ranked against every other team.

* CORRECTION- There was a mistake in the 5×5 standings pull for league 471 (the ERA and WHIP columns were reversed, but only for that league). 

The result of that correction is that Tux, Tophat, & Monocle-Oh My! from #471 are the true #1 team in 5×5 with a Power ranking of 503.9 (Tux was also #1 on the August rankings). I have corrected the table above to reflect the corrected rankings. 

Congratulations to Boise Boats, who rose from #5 last month to #2 on the year overall. This marks back to back top five finishes for the Boats, as they were #4 in ’16. Natty Boh also repeats as a top five team (#4 this year, #5 last year), and Napalm Bombs repeat as a top ten team (#7 this year, #8 last year).

And the 5×5 league rankings based on the same average team ranking method as previously discussed:

Note- there are 540 teams and 45 leagues in the 5×5 format

Can of Corn Baseball League rose from #3 last month to #1 as Ultimate Foul Balls fell just short in defending their #1 ranking from last year.

Last, but not least, here are the rankings for the top teams in ottoneu 4×4:

Congratulations to The Aviary Connection as they held on to their #1 ranking from last month. Congratulations also to Zeezils for their back to back top five finishes (#5 in ’17, #1 in ’16).

And the rankings for the top 4×4 leagues:

Note- there are 240 teams and 20 leagues in the 4×4 format

Wendy Peffercorn Fantasy Baseball League holds on to their #1 spot from last month and now have back to back top five finishes (#4 in 2016). original ottoneu failed to repeat their #1 ranking from last season, but back to back top two finishes is impressive nonetheless.
