MASH Report (7/12/16)

• The players going to and from the DL are a little wonky with the All-Star break. It seems some player would have been on it if regular games were going on. Instead, teams are going to wait until Friday to make some moves. Follow the news as much as possible to get an idea if a player is going to play or not once the break is over.

Craig Kimbrel will be out 3-6 weeks after having surgery on his knee to repair a torn meniscus.

Red Sox All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee medial meniscus tear on Saturday. He is scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday to repair cartilage in his left knee and is expected to be out for three to six weeks.

The time table is fairly realistic with the wide range of possibilities.

Carlos Rodon is out for a bit after tripping on the dugout stairs and spraining his wrist.

Rodon suffered the injury by tripping on the dugout stairs Friday as he was going to the field for the national anthem.

“I slipped on to the field and tried to catch myself,” Rodon said. “I’m not going to lie, I was a little em-barrassed. I was like, ‘I hope no one saw that.’ I got out there and was like just laughing when the an-them was going on. I came back in and sat down and I was like, ‘All right, this kind of hurts a little bit.’

“It didn’t swell. We had an X-ray and the doctor classified it as a sprain, and that’s about it.”

Brandon Phillips is going to try to play through a broken hand.

Phillips iced his hand overnight and took anti-inflammatory medication, and the swelling went down. He took some swings in the indoor cage and was given the green light to play.

“It feels better. I was looking like Sherman Clump, but now I’m starting to look like Buddy Love, be-cause it’s shrinking,” Phillips said on Saturday, referencing the Nutty Professor movies. “As long as the swelling keeps going down, it will be all right. It was really puffy yesterday.”

I don’t expect his to go well. Normally, it takes a month and a half to come back from such an injury. Playing through it will keep the hand from healing right. I would just stay completely away.

• The Angels decided to go ahead and place C.J. Cron on the DL with his fractured hand.

Ryan Zimmerman is on the 15-day DL with a strained rib cage.

This marks the sixth consecutive season in which Zimmerman was placed on the DL. He had a problem with the rib cage during his third at-bat against the Brewers on Wednesday, a game in which he went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Zimmerman said the rib cage injury is not as sore as it was the day he injured it. Zimmerman hopes to be back sometime after the All-Star break.

• Zach McAllister is going to miss some time with hip discomfort.

Fastball velocity reading for pitchers returning from the DL

Andrew Bailey’s velocity is in line with his ’16 values but lower than ’15.

Hyun-Jin Ryu’s velocity is down 1 mph compared to when he threw last.

I read that as more of a worst case scenario. If Kershaw feels discomfort in his back in the next week or two, he will probably be shut down for about a week, then will require a longer rehab as he would probably have to start a game or two in the minors before being brought back.

As it stands now, under the best case scenario he wouldn’t require any rehab starts in the minors, but he’s right on the fringe as he hasn’t pitched in 16 days, and isn’t expected within the next week.

I think late July is much more likely than late August, but it’s hard to count on anything.
